Abstract A high-quality delta18O record has been obtained from a deep sea core in the Somali Basin in a water depth of 4020 m, well below the foraminiferal lysocline, by analyzing bulk sediment instead of picked foraminifera. In some areas this may be a valuable tool for extending the applicability of the delta18O stratigraphy, for obtaining data by a less labor-intensive procedure, and for conserving valuable core material. Additionally, we draw attention to the need for more data on delta13C in bulk carbonate if we are to fully utilize the ocean delta13C record either in relation to long-term global carbon budget, or in relation to changes in carbon cycling in the ocean and its effect on atmospheric pCO2.

Abstract A 10-month-old female neutered domestic shorthair cat presented with a history of urinary incontinence and recurrent bacterial cystitis since 2 months of age. Physical examination was unremarkable other than vulval hypoplasia. Genitourinary dysplasia was diagnosed following a physical examination, CT imaging and retrograde positive contrast urethrocystography. Attempted medical management of the urinary incontinence was unsuccessful. Surgical treatment consisted of cystourethroplasty combined with artificial urethral sphincter placement, resulting in marked improvement of urinary continence. Following multiple adjustments of the artificial urethral sphincter near-total continence was achieved, which was maintained at 10 months post-surgery.

Abstract The predominant type of plasmids found in Acinetobacter species encode a Rep_3 initiation protein and many of these carry their accessory genes in dif modules. Here, available sequences of the 14 members of the group of Rep_3 plasmids typed as R3-T33, using a threshold of 95% identity in the repA gene, were compiled and compared. These plasmids were from various Acinetobacter species. The pdif sites were identified allowing the backbone and dif modules to be defined. As for other Rep_3 plasmids carrying dif modules, orfX encoding a protein of unknown function was found downstream of repA followed by a pdif site in the orientation XerC binding site-spacer-XerD binding site. Most backbones (n = 12) also included mobA and mobC genes but the two plasmids with the most diverged repA and orfX genes had different backbone contents. Although the gene content of the plasmid backbone was largely conserved, extensive recombinational exchange was detected and only two small groups carried identical or nearly identical backbones. Individual plasmids were associated with 1 to 13 dif modules. Many different dif modules were identified, including ones containing antibiotic or chromate resistance genes and several toxin/antitoxin gene pairs. In some cases, modules carrying the same genes were significantly diverged. Generally, the orientation of the pdif sites alternated such that C modules (XerC binding sites internal) alternated with D modules (XerD binding sites internal). However, fusions of two dif modules via mutational inactivation or loss of a pdif site were also detected.

Abstract During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 105, three sites (Sites 645 through 647) were drilled in Baffin Bay and the Labrador Sea to examine the tectonic evolution and the climatic and oceanic histories of this region. Biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic results vary at each site, while stratigraphic resolution depends on the limited abundance of marker species and the completeness of the paleomagnetic record. Because of the paucity of planktonic microfossils and the poor paleomagnetic record signatures, stratigraphic determinations at Site 645 often rely on defining minimum temporal constraints on specific samples or stratigraphic intervals. The completed stratigraphy indicates that the sedimentary sequence recovered at Site 645 is early Miocene to Holocene in age.
The magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphies are better defined at Sites 646 and 647 in the Labrador Sea. Site 646 generally contains a well-developed magnetostratigraphy and calcareous microfossil biostratigraphy. This biostratigraphy is based on calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifers typical of the North Atlantic Ocean. Siliceous microfossils are also present at Site 646, but they are restricted to upper Pliocene through Holocene sediments. The stratigraphic sequence recovered at Site 646 is late Miocene to Holocene in age.
Based primarily on the calcareous nannofossil stratigraphy, the sequence recovered at Site 647 consists of lower Eocene to lower Oligocene, lower Miocene, upper Miocene, and upper Pliocene through Holocene sediments. Three hiatuses are present in this sequence: the older hiatus separates lower Oligocene sediments from lower Miocene sediments, another hiatus separates lower Miocene sediments from upper Miocene sediments, and the youngest one separates upper Miocene from upper Pliocene sediments. A magnetostratigraphy is defined for the interval from the Gauss/Matuyama boundary through the Brunhes (Clement et al., this volume). Both planktonic foraminifers and siliceous microfossils have restricted occurrences. Planktonic foraminifers occur in Pliocene and younger sediments, and siliceous microfossils are present in lower Miocene and lower Oligocene sediments.
The near-continuous Eocene through lower Oligocene sequence recovered at Site 647 allows the calcareous nannofossils and diatom stratigraphies at this site to act as a Paleogene stratigraphic framework. This framework can be compared with the stratigraphy previously completed for DSDP Site 112.

Abstract Anhedonia is a reduction in enjoyment, motivation, or interest. It is common across mental health disorders and a harbinger of poor treatment outcomes. The enjoyment aspect, termed 'consummatory anhedonia', in particular poses fundamental questions about how the brain constructs rewards: what processes determine how intensely a reward is experienced? Here, we outline limitations of existing computational conceptualisations of consummatory anhedonia. We then suggest a richer reinforcement learning (RL) account of consummatory anhedonia with a reconceptualisation of subjective hedonic experience in terms of goal progress. This accounts qualitatively for the impact of stress, dysfunctional cognitions, and maladaptive beliefs on hedonic experience. The model also offers new views on the treatments for anhedonia.
