Abstract This paper offers a detailed firm-level analysis of innovation strategies, exporting activities and employment and sales dynamics of Polish biotechnology companies. The study is based on the unique dataset provided by three runs of the Polish edition of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS). Poland is a latecomer in the biotechnology industry, as are all the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs). In addition, the Polish biotechnology sector faced relatively unfavorable starting conditions: no partners in the pharmaceutical industry and, unlike some other CEECs, little government support. Nevertheless, biotechnology companies have developed in several Polish industries. It is shown that these companies implement innovation strategies that are typical for the biotechnology sector; however, they do not cooperate much with their clients. The innovation expenditure of biotechnology companies is distinctively higher than that of other companies. In addition, government and EU grants play a crucial role in funding the R&D activities of Polish biotechnology companies. This reflects the change in the innovation policy in Poland, but also raises the question of the sustainability of these efforts. Biotechnology companies are strongly export-oriented but, contrary to expectations, their dynamics are average: when controlling for firm characteristics and export performance, biotechnology companies neither outperform nor underperform other companies in terms of sales or employment growth.

Abstract Uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 is widespread. We investigate the timing and quantify the impact of COVID-19 related uncertainty on returns and volatility for regional market aggregates using ARCH/GARCH models. Drawing upon economic psychology, COVID-19 related uncertainty is measured by searches for information as reflected by Google search trends. Asian markets are more resilient than others. Latin American markets are most impacted in terms of returns and volatility. For most regions, there is evidence of an increasing impact of COVID-19 related uncertainty which dissipates as the crisis evolves. We confirm that Google search trends capture uncertainty by comparing this measure against alternative uncertainty measures.

Abstract Prior research has shown that energy sector stock prices are impacted by uncertainty. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has given rise to widespread health and economic-related uncertainty. In this study, we investigate the magnitude and the timing of the impact of COVID-19 related uncertainty on returns and volatility for 20 national energy indices and a global energy index using ARCH/GARCH models. We propose a novel "overall impact of uncertainty" (OIU) measure, explained using a natural phenomenon analogy of the overall impact of a rainstorm, to gauge the magnitude and intensity of the impact of uncertainty on energy sector returns. Drawing upon economic psychology, COVID-19 related uncertainty is measured in terms of searches for information relating to COVID-19 as captured by Google search trends. Our results show that the energy sectors of countries further west from the outbreak of the virus in China are impacted to a greater extent by COVID-19 related uncertainty. A similar observation is made for net energy and oil exporters relative to importers. We also find that the impact of uncertainty on most national energy sectors intensified and then weakened as the pandemic evolved. Additional analysis confirms that COVID-19 uncertainty is part of the composite set of factors that drive energy sector returns over the COVID-19 period although its importance has declined over time.

Abstract Objective: The main objective of this article is to study the empirical relationship between innovations and export performance of Polish firms. Research Design & Methods: Our analytical framework refers to the most recent strand in the new trade theory literature based on the Melitz (2003) model that stresses the role of firm heterogeneity and the importance of firm productivity in entering export markets. We treat innovations as a key element that can increase the level of productivity and study the significance of both product and process innovations. The empirical implementation of the theoretical framework is based on the probit model and the unique Polish CIS firm-level dataset covering the period 2008-2010. Findings: Our estimation results indicate that the probability of exporting is positively related to product and process innovations, firm size, the share of university graduates in productive employment and foreign capital participation. The results depend also on the level of technology used in the analysed sector and the relative importance of export market. Implications & Recommendations: It is necessary to develop an innovation supporting mechanism that would stimulate both product and process innovations in Poland. Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in the use of the unique Polish CIS firm level dataset that allows distinguishing between product and process innovations.
