Abstract Aim: Little is known about the association between fear of falling (FOF) and the risk of mortality. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between FOF and mortality among community-dwelling older adults.
Methods: A total of 3814 older adults aged 65 years and older living in the Shih-Pai area in Taiwan participated in this 7-year follow-up longitudinal study. A structured questionnaire was used to record participants' FOF, history of falling, demographic characteristics, medical conditions, history of insomnia, depression symptoms and subjective health from 1999 to 2002. Follow-up all-cause mortality data were obtained from the National Death Registry of the Department of Health to identify the occurrence of deaths from the initial interview through to 31 December 2008.
Results: At the baseline assessment, the mean age of the participants was 73.8 ± 5.8 years, 56.4% were men and 53.4% had FOF. Cox regression showed that participants with FOF had an increased risk of mortality (aHR 1.16, 95% CI 1.02-1.33) after adjusting for sex, history of falling, age, body mass index, marital status, education level, smoking status, alcohol use, living status, chronic condition, depression and subjective health. Furthermore, FOF was a significant risk factor for male participants (aHR 1.17, 95% CI 1.00-1.38), but had a marginal risk for female participants (aHR 1.24, 95% CI 0.95-1.60) after adjusting for other risk factors, as in the full model except for sex.
Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest that FOF is a significant risk factor of mortality, especially in older male adults. Further research on the mechanism and effects of fear of falling on mortality is necessary. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2017; 17: 2216-2223.

Abstract: ... of falling among older people in the Shih-Pai area in Taiwan.: Methods: This community-based survey ...

Abstract Background: Fear of falling is an important risk indicator for adverse health related outcomes in older adults. However, factors associated with fear of falling among community-dwelling older adults are not well-explored.
Objectives: To explore the quality of life and associated factors in fear of falling among older people in the Shih-Pai area in Taiwan.
Methods: This community-based survey recruited three thousand eight hundred and twenty-four older adults aged ≥ 65 years. The measurements included a structured questionnaire, including quality of life by using Short-Form 36, and information of fear of falling, fall history, demographics, medical conditions, insomnia, sleep quality, depression and subjective health through face-to-face interviews.
Results: A total of 53.4% of participants reported a fear of falling. The rate of fear of falling was higher in female subjects. Subjects with fear of falling had lower Short Form-36 scores both for men and women. Falls in the previous year, older age, insomnia, depression and worse subjective health were correlates of fear of falling for both sexes. Male-specific associations with fear of falling were the accessibility of medical help in an emergency, diabetes mellitus and stroke. In parallel, cardiovascular diseases were a female-specific correlate for fear of falling.
Conclusions: Fear of falling is prevalent among community-dwelling older adults. It is seems that there are gender differences in fear of falling with respect to the prevalence and associated factors in older adults. Gender differences should be considered when planning prevention and intervention strategies for fear of falling among older people.

  5. Article: Responses of ‘Shih Huo Chuan’ pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus (Weber) Britt. & Rose) to different degrees of shading nets

Abstract: ... Shih Huo Chuan’ pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus (Weber) Britt. & Rose). All shading nets reduced sunburn ...

Abstract This study was to investigate the effects of three shading nets (25% shading with a white net, 50% shading with a black net, and 75% shading with a black net) on the growth and fruiting of red-fleshed ‘Shih Huo Chuan’ pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus (Weber) Britt. & Rose). All shading nets reduced sunburn occurrence and improved cladodes color by decreasing lightness (L*) and chroma (C*), but increasing hue angle (h°). Shading resulted in more chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content in cladodes than seen in control. Fruit length significantly increased but there were no effects on fruit width under 50% and 75% black shading nets. Shading treatments reduced total soluble solids content, but did not influence on total titratable acidity and TSS/TA ratio. The highest fresh weight and the lowest fruit splitting percentage were found with a 50% black shading net. In addition, the peel and pulp of fruit turned red and total betacyanins were accumulated one and two days earlier than seen with the control when plants were grown under 50% and 75% black shading nets, respectively.

Abstract Human activity such as the development of slope land around watersheds has dramatically affected the ecological environment in Taiwan. This situation has been aggravated by heavy precipitation from typhoons in the summertime. The results include serious soil erosion and mass movement in the Shih-men Reservoir watershed. In order to identify the most fragile areas and seek the triggering factors of landslide changes that can cause turbid currents in the Shih-men Reservoir watershed, this study integrates different types of satellite imagery and geographic information system data to determine changes in land cover and vegetation cover since the early 1970s. Results from spatial regression models indicate road and land uses are the main factors that lead to slope failure along roads and contribute to a large number of landslides in environmental hotspots like the Baishih River sub-watershed. Soil erosion estimates indicate a positive relationship between the increases in landslide and soil loss areas and the road system development. Therefore, human development has a significant negative influence both on sensitive mountainous watersheds and on critical environmental hotspots.

  9. Article: Projection of climate change for daily precipitation: a case study in Shih-Men reservoir catchment in Taiwan

Abstract: ... as predictors, was proposed to simulate the daily precipitations in the Shih-Men reservoir catchment in Taiwan ...

Abstract A statistical downscaling model, based on the outputs of general circulation models (GCMs) as predictors, was proposed to simulate the daily precipitations in the Shih-Men reservoir catchment in Taiwan. The structure of the proposed downscaling model is composed of two parts: classification and regression. Predictors of classification and regression models were selected from the large-scale weather variables in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NECP) reanalysis data based on statistical tests. Discriminant analysis and support vector regression (SVR) were applied to build the classification and regression models. The outputs of five atmosphere-ocean GCMs, which are reported to have properly considered tropical cyclone information and East Asian Monsoon modelling, were used for projecting future precipitations. Data from four grids covering Taiwan were used for developing the downscaling model. The potential of the downscaling models in simulating local precipitations was evaluated, and downscaling results reveal that the proposed downscaling model can reproduce local daily precipitations from large-scale weather variables. Projected local precipitations under two emission scenarios show that the precipitations in the study area tend to decrease. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
