    Abstract Frailty is a major geriatric syndrome with a multifactorial etiology that induces a decline in multiple physiological and psychological functions. In traditional East Asian medicine (TEAM), qi and blood deficiency clinically represent as fatigue, anemia, anorexia, decreased strength after illness, and weakness, commonly interpretated as frailty. An herbal prescription of Insamyangyeongtang (IYT, Ninjin'yoeito in Japanese, Ren-Shen-Yang-Rong-Tang in Chinese) tonifies qi and blood and has the potential to treat multiple targets caused by qi and blood deficiency. As the population ages and frailty increases, there is an increase in the potential effectiveness of IYT in frailty. This study reviewed relevant clinical trials to provide an updated view on the effect of IYT on frailty. IYT has therapeutic effects on frailty associated with chronic respiratory diseases (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and cognitive impairments (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) and improves respiratory symptoms and cognition. IYT also has therapeutic effects on weight gain, muscle mass, and strength, and improves nutritional status in frail elderly individuals who have decreased muscle mass and strength, loss of appetite, and weight loss. The same effect has been shown in frailty in elderly individuals with rehabilitation treatment and chronic diseases. IYT also improves frailty associated with symptoms such as intractable dizziness and genitourinary symptoms. The beneficial effects of IYT in several diseases could be important for medication replacement, reduction, and prevention of polypharmacy. Based on the results of this review, we suggest that IYT has the potential to be a therapeutic agent against frailty.

    Abstract Objectives: After the evidence-based Korean medicine clinical practice guidelines (KM-CPGs) for 30 targeted diseases were developed in 2021, 34 diseases have been proposed for the second-wave development of the KM-CPGs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development priorities of the candidate diseases into the second-wave development of KM-CPGs in south Korea.
    Methods: In this study, we analyzed the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service National Patient Sample data from 2017 to 2018 to determine the demand and economic importance of the candidates for the second-wave development of KM-CPGs in real-world clinical settings in Korea.
    Results: The annual number of visits and patients, annual healthcare expenditure per patient, and healthcare expenditure per institution were analyzed. Musculoskeletal disorders, including sciatica and adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder, were the most important topics regarding the number of visits and patients and annual healthcare expenditure per institution. Specifically, sciatica (52.05% of the total number of visits, 48.34% of the total number of patients, and 42.12% of the total treatment expenditure per institution) showed overwhelmingly high proportions. However, cerebral palsy (36.03% of the total number of inpatient visits and 24.55% of the total number of inpatient patients) was a more important topic in inpatient clinical settings than musculoskeletal conditions or cancer, and healthcare expenditure per patient in this topic had the highest ranking. Furthermore, fractures were found to be highly important in inpatient clinical settings. No patients had influenza A virus infection or posttraumatic stress disorders who visited the KM medical institution of interest.
    Conclusion: This study highlights the gap between the real-world clinical setting and the research field in some topics. The results of this study can provide guidance for the second-wave development of KM-CPGs in the future.

    Abstract Background: This systematic review protocol aims to provide evidence of the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on postoperative recovery and extubation time.
    Methods: The following 11 electronic databases will be searched from inception: The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, 1 Chinese database (CNKI), and 5 Korean databases (OASIS, DBpia, RISS, KISS, NDSL). Only randomized controlled trials of acupuncture treatment for postoperative recovery after surgery will be included for review. The selection of the studies, data extraction, and management will be performed independently by 3 researchers. Methodological quality, including the risk of bias, will be assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool.
    Results and conclusions: Our systematic review will provide evidence of the efficacy of acupuncture on postoperative recovery and extubation time. This evidence will provide useful information to practitioners and patients in the field of surgery and complementary medicine.

    Abstract Background: The world's population is rapidly aging, and attention to and research on the increase in life expectancy and age-related diseases are needed. This study aimed to review the in vivo studies on the anti-aging effects of herbal medicines.
    Methods: In vivo studies of single or complex herbal medicines for anti-aging that were published in the last five years were included in this review. The following databases were used: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and EMBASE.
    Results: A total of 41 studies were considered eligible for the review. The articles were classified into body organs and functions, experimental country, herbal medicine, extraction method, administration route, dosage, duration, animal model, aging-induced method, sex, number of animals per group, and outcomes and mechanisms A single herbal extract was used in a total of 21 studies including
    Conclusions: Herbal medicine exhibited beneficial effects on anti-aging in various parts of the body and its function. Further investigation of the appropriate herbal medicine prescriptions and their components is recommended.
