Abstract Abstract: Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, published in 2007, is a novel that focuses on the ideological standpoint of a young Pakistani man, Changez, who seeks for a solid standing ground in his own cultural origins after his educational and professional life in the US that westernized him fully. The novel, narrated within a frame story, is set on a single evening in Lahore where Changez tells his life back in America to an American in a café. Changez’s narration follows the story of his past with flashbacks and he leads the reader through his ideological change. Thus, purpose of this study is to question Changez’s ideological change after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York 2001. As memory traces his own past through what he went under duringthe 9/11 attacks, his approach to his western acquaintance in the Lahore café changes. This paper, therefore, raises questions as to whether memories change one’s ideology in terms of their political stance, or one’s cultural origins that determine them. Öz: Mohsin Hamid’in 2007’de yayımlanan Gönülsüz Köktendinci romanı Pakistan kökenli genç Cengiz’in ideolojik duruşundaki değişimlere odaklanan bir romandır.

Abstract Droughts and heat waves are currently recognized as two of the most serious threats associated with climate changes. Drought is characterized by prolonged dry periods, low precipitation, and high temperature, while heat wave refers to an extended period of exceptionally high temperature, surpassing the region's average for that time of year. There is a close relationship between droughts and heat waves, as both are often caused by similar weather patterns and can exacerbate each other's impacts. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor and quantify both droughts and heat waves jointly at a regional level in order to develop sustainable policies and effectively manage water resources. This article develops a new index, the standardized composite index for climate extremes (SCICE), for joint monitoring and probabilistic quantification of extreme climate events at regional level. The procedure of SCICE is mainly based on the joint standardization of standardized precipitation index (SPI) and standardized temperature index (STI). In the application of SCICE, results reveal that the long-term probabilities of the joint occurrence of dry and hot events are significantly greater than those of wet and cold events. Furthermore, the outcomes of the comparative assessment support the validity of using SCICE as a compact statistical approach in regional drought analysis. In summation, the study demonstrates the capability of SCICE to effectively characterize and assess the joint monitoring of drought and heat waves at a regional level, providing a comprehensive approach to understanding the joint impact of climate extremes.

Abstract Present study investigated the preparation of commonly used white sauce with 50 % less added fat by using 10 % hydroypropylated Irri and Basmati rice starches in the formulation. The sauces incorporated with hydroxypropylated starches exhibited significantly lower gelatinization temperature and time, while the change in maximum viscosity was insignificant. Significantly improved stability at ambient, refrigeration, and freezing temperatures of reduced-fat white sauces was observed whereas change in the taste was insignificant. Basmati hydroxypropylated starch containing white sauce significantly mimicked the sensory properties of full-fat sauces. The hydroxypropyl groups were found to be 1.06 % and 1.16 % for Basmati and Irri hydroxypropylated starches, respectively. These values fall below the specified limit set by the Food and Drug Administration for the food grade hydroxypropylated starches. Significant improvements in peak viscosity, swelling power, solubility, percent transmittance, and water retention capacity were observed after the chemical modification of both rice varieties.

Abstract In this study, we considered the flow of a micropolar fluid over a vertical Riga sheet. The non linear stretching sheet is considered. The effects of variable thermal conductivity and radiation on the Riga sheet are taken into account. Additionally, we also debated the Brownian motion and thermophoretic. To simplify the partial differential equations, we converted them into dimensionless ordinary differential equations using suitable similarity variables and solved dimensionless system numerically using the bvp4c function. The impact of some intended parameters on the dimensionless velocity, microrotation, temperature, and concentration distributions graphically are presented and the numerical outcomes of physical quantities like skin friction, Nusselt number, Sherwood number, and couple stress have been presented in tabular form. The micropolar parameter increased which increased the couple stress and friction at surface. Because, the fluid rotation increased which increased friction at surface and also increased the couple stress. The transfer of mass decayed and transfer of heat heightened by larger values of variable thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity improved which improved the heat transfer phenomena, so transfer of heat at surface becomes larger while also reducing the transfer of mass.

Abstract Orthopedic metallic prostheses are commonly used in the current practice of orthopedic surgery. Although, biomaterials used in these implants are generally considered to be biologically inert, there have been consequences of foreign body reactions and potential carcinogenesis. Majority of implant-related malignancies are high grade, and develop in bone or soft tissue around the implant site. No clear association has been identified between the biomaterial implanted and the type of sarcoma. We report the case of a 36-year-old male who underwent intramedullary nailing of femur for mid-shaft fracture secondary to trauma and presented with osteogenic sarcoma of femur 14 months later.
