Abstract We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decays B^{+}→K^{+}τ^{±}ℓ^{∓}, with ℓ=(e,μ), using the full data sample of 772×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We use events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. We find no evidence for B^{±}→K^{±}τℓ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the (1-3)×10^{-5} range. The obtained limits are the world's best results.

Abstract We report a measurement of the CP-violating parameters C and S in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{0} decays at Belle II using a sample of 387×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] events recorded in e^{+}e^{-} collisions at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ(4S) resonance. These parameters are determined by fitting the proper decay-time distribution of a sample of 415 signal events. We obtain C=-0.04_{-0.15}^{+0.14}±0.05 and S=0.75_{-0.23}^{+0.20}±0.04, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Abstract Study design: A prospective multicenter study.
Objective: The objective of this study is to compare the surgical outcomes of anterior and posterior fusion surgeries in patients with K-line (-) cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL).
Summary of background data: Although laminoplasty is effective for patients with K-line (+) OPLL, fusion surgery is recommended for those with K-line (-) OPLL. However, whether the anterior or posterior approach is preferable for this pathology has not been effectively determined.
Materials and methods: A total of 478 patients with myelopathy due to cervical OPLL from 28 institutions were prospectively registered from 2014 to 2017 and followed up for two years. Of the 478 patients, 45 and 46 with K-line (-) underwent anterior and posterior fusion surgeries, respectively. After adjusting for confounders in baseline characteristics using a propensity score-matched analysis, 54 patients in both the anterior and posterior groups (27 patients each) were evaluated. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the cervical Japanese Orthopaedic Association and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Cervical Myelopathy Evaluation Questionnaire.
Results: Both approaches showed comparable neurological and functional recovery. The cervical range of motion was significantly restricted in the posterior group because of the large number of fused vertebrae compared with the anterior group. The incidence of surgical complications was comparable between the cohorts, but the posterior group demonstrated a higher frequency of segmental motor paralysis, whereas the anterior group more frequently reported postoperative dysphagia.
Conclusions: Clinical improvement was comparable between anterior and posterior fusion surgeries for patients with K-line (-) OPLL. The ideal surgical approach should be informed based on the balance between the surgeon's technical preference and the risk of complications.

Abstract Using the data sample of 980  fb^{-1} collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider, we present the results of an investigation of the Λπ^{+} and Λπ^{-} invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Λπ^{+}π^{+}π^{-}. We find a significant signal in each mass distribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the Λπ^{+} (Λπ^{-}) combination a mass of 1434.3±0.6(stat)±0.9(syst)  MeV/c^{2} [1438.5±0.9(stat)±2.5(syst)  MeV/c^{2}], an intrinsic width of 11.5±2.8(stat)±5.3(syst)  MeV/c^{2} [33.0±7.5(stat)±23.6(syst)  MeV/c^{2}] with a significance of 7.5σ (6.2σ). As these two signals are very close to the K[over ¯]N threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a K[over ¯]N cusp, and find that we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.

Abstract We found that shochu slop, the residue generated during the production of distilled shochu liquor, which must be treated as industrial waste, can be used as an excellent medium for Escherichia coli culture. LB medium is generally used in laboratories for culturing E. coli. However, it is not the optimal medium for E. coli culture because the bacterial cells cannot grow to very high densities in LB medium. On the other hand, E. coli can grow to higher densities in Terrific broth and this medium is used when researchers want to grow E. coli to high density or to obtain a protein with high yield. In this study, we removed solid matter from shochu slop, adjusted the pH of the mixture to 7 and subsequently used the slop for E. coli culture. The ability of shochu slop to support E. coli growth was compared with those of LB Miller medium and Terrific broth. The results indicate that sweet potato shochu slop as culture medium for E. coli is comparable to Terrific broth and much better than LB Miller medium in terms of supporting cell proliferation, and plasmid and enzyme production. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Shochu manufacturers incur a cost to dispose shochu slop, which is recognized as food manufactural residues. Escherichia coli has been used in laboratories and in industry. However, culture media used in the laboratories are expensive and those used in industry are expensive because of their large scale. We found that sweet potato shochu slop is an excellent culture medium for E. coli. This finding is not only useful for laboratories and industry, but also beneficial to the effective utilization of this renewable resource to create a sustainable society.

Abstract We measure the decay B_{s}^{0}→K^{0}K[over ¯]^{0} using data collected at the ϒ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^{+}e^{-} collider. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 121.4  fb^{-1}. We measure a branching fraction B(B_{s}^{0}→K^{0}K[over ¯]^{0})=[19.6_{-5.1}^{+5.8}(stat)±1.0(syst)±2.0(N_{B_{s}^{0}B[over ¯]_{s}^{0}})]×10^{-6} with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. This measurement constitutes the first observation of this decay.

Abstract We attempted to generate ultrahigh pressure and temperature simultaneously using a multi-anvil apparatus by combining the technologies of ultrahigh-pressure generation using sintered diamond (SD) anvils, which can reach 120 GPa, and ultrahigh-temperature generation using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) heater, which can reach 4000 K. Along with this strategy, we successfully generated a temperature of 3300 K and a pressure of above 50 GPa simultaneously. Although the high hardness of BDD significantly prevents high-pressure generation at low temperatures, its high-temperature softening allows for effective pressure generation at temperatures above 1200 K. High temperature also enhances high-pressure generation because of the thermal pressure. We expect to generate even higher pressure in the future by combining SD anvils and a BDD heater with advanced multi-anvil technology.

Abstract KCNE1 encodes a modulator of KCNQ1 and KCNH2 channels. Although KCNE1(G38S), a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) causing a G38S substitution in KCNE1, is found frequently, whether and how this SNP causes long QT syndrome (LQTS) remains unclear. We evaluated rate-dependent repolarization dynamics using Holter electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess the pathogenicity of KCNE1(G38S). Forty-five patients exhibiting long QT intervals, as assessed by their baseline ECGs, and 16 control subjects were enrolled. KCNE1(G38S) carriers were identified using genome sequencing. LQTS patients were classified into LQT1 or LQT2 using genetic analysis or epinephrine test. QT-RR relations were determined using 24-h Holter ECG recordings. Among the 15 patients (33.3 %) with KCNE1(G38S), four patients without any mutations or amino acid changes in other major cardiac ion channels were categorized as KCNE1(G38S) carriers. In the QT-RR regression lines, the QT-RR slope was greater in the KCNE1(G38S) carriers and the LQT2 patients (0.215 ± 0.021 and 0.207 ± 0.032, respectively) than in the LQT1 patients (0.163 ± 0.014, P < 0.05) and the control subjects (0.135 ± 0.025, P < 0.001). The calculated QT intervals at an RR interval of 1200 ms were longer in the KCNE1(G38S) carriers and LQT1 and LQT2 patients than in the control subjects. Patients with KCNE1(G38S) had a rate-dependent repolarization abnormality similar to patients with LQT2 and, therefore, may have a potential risk to develop lethal arrhythmias.

Abstract A search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] is performed at the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 63  fb^{-1} collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance and a sample of 9  fb^{-1} collected at an energy 60 MeV below the resonance. Because the measurable decay signature involves only a single charged kaon, a novel measurement approach is used that exploits not only the properties of the B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] decay, but also the inclusive properties of the other B meson in the ϒ(4S)→BB[over ¯] event, to suppress the background from other B meson decays and light-quark pair production. This inclusive tagging approach offers a higher signal efficiency compared to previous searches. No significant signal is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] of 4.1×10^{-5} is set at the 90% confidence level.
