Abstract Black women experience more frequent and severe intimate partner violence (IPV), but there are mixed findings on their posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. This may be explained by cultural-salient factors which are associated with fewer posttraumatic cognitions. We hypothesized an indirect effect of race on PTSD symptoms via social support, empowerment, and posttraumatic cognitions, serially. Path analysis revealed Black women reported increased social support, which was associated with higher levels of empowerment, which was associated with lower levels of posttraumatic cognitions. Decreased posttraumatic cognitions were associated with less severe PTSD symptoms. Results increase understanding of culturally-salient factors that may impact PTSD symptoms in Black women.

Abstract Objective: The current study sought to investigate the prevalence and correlates of survival sex among a diverse sample of women residing in a domestic violence (DV) shelter.
Method: Two hundred seven women (44% Black, 37.7% White, 10.6% Multiracial, 4.3% Latina, 1% Arab, 1% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 1.4% Indigenous or Aboriginal) residing in a Summit County, Ohio, DV shelter completed a survey assessing their involvement in survival sex, the associated contextual factors (e.g., age at first incidence of survival sex, the reason for engaging in survival sex), and self-report measures assessing substance use, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and empowerment.
Results: More than two-thirds of participants reported engaging in survival sex, and participants who did were more likely to have elevated rates of substance use, PTSD symptoms, ACEs, and IPV victimization, along with lower empowerment. Most commonly, women reported engaging in survival sex for fear that the other person would take away valuable support or things they needed. Participants also reported engaging in survival sex for securing shelter, for money, for food, and to obtain drugs or alcohol. Notably, a sizable minority of women first engaged in survival sex as minors, suggesting overlap with the phenomenon of domestic minor sex trafficking.
Conclusions: Engaging in survival sex may be commonly experienced by women residing in DV shelters and is associated with trauma history and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Despite the small, non-representative sample, results indicate education for providers is necessary to interact effectively with this population. Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the awareness of a common hazard encountered in the dental clinic: aerosol transmission of pathogens. Treatment of sources of infection before or during dental procedures is one means of decreasing pathogen load and aerosol transmission.
Methods: An ultrasonic scaler supplied with aqueous ozone was used to examine the effect of its viability on planktonic cultures and biofilms formed by 2 model bacteria:
Results: Both organisms showed susceptibility to aqueous ozone alone (97% and 99.5% lethality, respectively). When combined with manual scaling using an ultrasonic scaler, a greater than 99% reduction in colony-forming units (CFUs)/mL could be reached with an aqueous ozone concentration of approximately 2 mg/L (
Conclusions: Aqueous ozone coupled with ultrasonic scaling exhibited a higher efficiency of microbial kill than either method used alone

Abstract Loyalty to friends is an important moral value, but does that mean snitching on friends is considered immoral? Across six preregistered studies, we examine how loyalty obligations impact people's moral evaluations of snitching (i.e., turning in others who commit transgressions). In vignette and incentivized partner choice paradigms, we find that witnesses who snitch (vs. do not snitch) are seen as more moral and as better leaders (Studies 1-6), regardless of whether they snitch on a friend or an acquaintance (Studies 1-3). We find that a willingness to turn in one's friends increases perceived morality, while an unwillingness to do so diminishes it, with the latter effect exhibiting a stronger impact than the former (Study 2). Our experiments also demonstrate that snitches receive less moral credit when snitching on nonmoral (vs. moral) transgressions (Study 3) and when snitching aligns with self-interest (Study 4). We demonstrate that although snitching is often seen as morally right, turning in transgressors entails important reputational trade-offs: Snitching makes one appear disloyal and a bad friend but boosts perceptions of morality and leadership. This reveals a context in which what is loyal is no longer considered moral. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract From behavior to gene expression, circadian rhythms regulate nearly all aspects of physiology. Here, we present a methodology to challenge mouse splenocytes with the pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) lipopolysaccharide (LPS), ODN1826, and heat-killed Listeria monocytogenes and examine their effect on the molecular circadian clock. Previously, studies have focused on examining the influence of LPS on the molecular clock using a variety of in vivo and ex vivo approaches from an assortment of models (e.g., mouse, rat, and human). This protocol describes the isolation and challenge of splenocytes, as well as the methodology to assess clock gene expression post-challenge via quantitative PCR. This approach can be used to assess not only the influence of microbial components on the molecular clock but other molecules as well that may alter expression of the clock. This approach could be utilized to tease apart the molecular mechanism of how PAMP-Toll-like receptor interaction influences clock expression.

Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence and severity of SpaceOAR-related adverse events using the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database.
Methods: We analyzed SpaceOAR-related adverse event reports in the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database from January 2015 to May 2023. For each report, the event type, associated device and patient problems, event description, event timing, and event severity stratified by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 5.0 (CTCAE) grading system were recorded.
Results: From 2015 to 2022, 206,619 SpaceOAR devices were sold. From January 2015 to May 2023, we identified 981 reports describing 990 SpaceOAR-related adverse events. Malfunctions were the most common event type (N = 626), followed by patient injuries (N = 350) with few reported deaths (N = 5). Device positioning problems were the most frequent device issue (N = 686). Pain was the most reported patient problem (N = 216). Abscesses and fistulas related to the device were each reported in 91 events. A noteworthy portion of relevant adverse events occurred before the initiation of radiation (N = 35, 22.4%), suggesting the device, rather than the radiation, was responsible. In total, 470 (50.2%) and 344 (36.7%) of the adverse events were CTCAE grade 1 and 2, respectively. There were 123 (13.1%) events that were CTCAE grade ≥3.
Conclusion: We identified multiple reports of SpaceOAR-related adverse events, many of which are more serious than have been reported in clinical trials. While SpaceOAR use is common, suggesting these events are rare, these data highlight the need for continued postmarket surveillance.

Abstract Objective: Given the evolving changes in the disposable e-cigarette market, we explore patterns of sales in the USA by e-liquid volume capacity, nicotine strength and real sales-weighted average prices by both e-cigarette unit and volume of e-liquid.
Methodology: We used NielsenIQ retail scanner data from January 2017 to September 2022 to examine changes over time for average product volume capacity in millilitres, nicotine strength (%) and both sales-weighted average price per disposable unit and per millilitre of e-liquid for each 4-week period.
Results: Among disposable e-cigarettes sold between January 2017 and September 2022, average volume capacity increased 518% from 1.1 mL to 5.7 mL and average nicotine strength increased 294% from 1.7% to 5%. Sales-weighted average price per disposable unit and millilitres of e-liquid both remained relatively constant until January 2020. From January 2020 through September 2022, average unit prices increased 165.7% from US$8.49 to US$14.07, while the average price of 1 mL of e-liquid decreased 69.2% from US$7.96 to US$2.45.
Conclusions: The current regulatory regime around e-cigarettes has resulted in disposable e-cigarette manufacturers providing consumers with bigger, cheaper disposable e-cigarettes that come in increasingly higher nicotine strengths. Tobacco policy recommendations such as restricting e-liquid capacity and minimum price laws as well as regulations on product characteristics that affect nicotine emissions and delivery such as nicotine strength, nicotine output, device power, and puff duration should be considered in regulating the e-cigarette market.
