Abstract A wide-angle seismic experiment at the Atlantis II Fracture Zone, Southwest Indian Ridge, together with geochemical analyses of dredged basalt glass samples from a site conjugate to Ocean Drilling Program hole 735B has allowed determination of the thickness and the most likely lithological composition of the crust beneath hole 735B. The measured Na, composition of 3.3 +/- 0.1 corresponds to a melt thickness of 3 +/- 1 km, a result consistent with rare earth element inversions which indicate a melt thickness of between 1.5 and 4.5 km. The seismic crustal thickness to the north and south of the Atlantis Platform (on which hole 735B is located) is 4 +/- 1 km, and probably consists largely of magmatic material since the seismic and inferred melt thicknesses agree within experimental uncertainty. Beneath hole 735B itself. the Moho is at a depth of 5 +/- 1 km beneath the seafloor. The seismic model suggests that, on average. about 1 km of upper crust has been unroofed on the Atlantis Platform. However, allowing for the inferred local unroofing of 2 km of upper crust at 735B, the base of the magmatic crust beneath this location is probably about 2 km beneath the seafloor, and is underlain by a 2-3 km thick layer of serpentinised mantle peridotite. The P-wave velocity of 6.9 km/s for the serpentinised peridotite layer corresponds to a 35 +/- 10 vol% serpentine content. The Moho beneath hole 735B probably represents a serpentinisation front.

Abstract From access to a detailed curriculum vitae written by Dr. Grant when he was about 75 years old, the author has learned some little-known facts of his background and life. His ancestors came from France and had been ennobled. One predecessor was a mayor of Paris. Several of his family decided to emigrate to Great Britain with the Huguenot movement. Grant graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1908 in the same class as his future brother-in-law, William Boyd. When World War I was declared, he immediately volunteered for the army. During service on the Western Front, he was mentioned in dispatches in 1916, won the Military Cross in 1917 and a bar to the Military Cross in 1918. At the outbreak of World War II, Grant, who had been a professor of anatomy first in Winnipeg and then in Toronto for many years, volunteered again for war service, but was rejected as being too valuable a teacher to be allowed to enlist.

Abstract Certain T-cell receptor (TCR) beta-chain variable (V), joining (J), and constant (C) gene segments, as well as TCR alpha-chain V gene segments, are disproportionally represented in TCR alpha and beta cDNA libraries derived from PHA-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes. Sequences of 138 TCR alpha clones and 96 TCR beta clones were determined and of these 128 TCR alpha clones and 88 TCR beta clones were found to contain unique combinations of V, J, and C gene segments or to display diversity in N region nucleotides. The frequency of the V, J, and C genes used in the assembly of unique transcripts was ascertained. Of the 24 reported V beta gene families, 21 were observed among the 88 TCR beta clones including four V beta families (V beta 1, V beta 2, V beta 3, and V beta 4) that were represented in the sample 2 1/2-5 times more frequently than would be expected on the basis of copy number within the gene complex. Seventy-eight percent of the clones were positive for C beta 2 and more than half of the clones (53%) used one of two J beta 2 genes: J beta 2.1 was present in 27 clones and J beta 2.7 in 20 clones. TCR V alpha families were also disproportionately represented in this sample. Twenty-five of 30 V alpha families were observed in the sample of 128 clones including six recently reported V alpha families. Three V alpha families, V alpha 2, V alpha 8, and V alpha 23, accounted for approximately 40% of the TCR alpha clones and were represented at 18%, 9.4%, and 13.3%, respectively. Both V alpha 2 and V alpha 8 gene families contain more than one gene; thus the number of clones observed in these families may, in part, be related to gene number. However, V alpha 23, which appears to be a single-copy gene family, is significantly overrepresented in this sample. Although disproportional usage of V beta genes may be accounted for by superantigen exposure, reasons for disproportional usage of J beta, C beta, and V alpha genes are presently unknown.

Abstract It is with a great deal of gratitude that Kirk D. Strosahl and Patricia J. Robinson accept the Don Bloch Award. Thirty-five years ago, when they embarked on their mission to improve healthcare, they never imagined that this recognition would come their way. Now that it has, they want to take about 1,000 words to share their views on health and their understanding of important barriers to improving healthcare services, and offer four practical strategies to consider as we do your part. Abstract Background: The FTC, in 2008, rescinded its 1966 guidance regarding use of the Cambridge Filter Method, noting the yields from the method are relatively poor indicators of tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide exposure. This article proposes a set of puffing conditions for cigarette emissions testing, with the goal of developing product-specific emissions characterizations which can subsequently be used to realistically model the yield of particulate matter and constituents to the mouth of a smoker, while accounting for the actual puffing behavior of the smoker.
Methods: Synthesis of data was conducted on data collected from a prior one-week observation of 26 adult cigarette smokers, using their usual brand cigarette in each smokers' natural environment including the puff flow rate, duration, volume and time of day of each puff taken were recorded with a cigarette topography monitor. Data was analyzed to determine the empirical joint probability function and cumulative distribution function of mean puff flow rate and puff duration. The joint CDF was used to define an emissions topography protocol using concepts common to computational grid generation.
Results: Analysis of 8,250 cigarette puffs indicated the middle 95% of mean puff flow rates varied between 15 and 121 [mL/s] while the middle 95% of puff duration varied from 0.55 to 3.42 [s].
Conclusions: Thirteen conditions of varying mean puff flow rate and puff duration are proposed for a comprehensive cigarette emissions topography protocol. The proposed protocol addresses inadequacies associated with common machine-puffing profiles used for generating cigarette emissions.
