Abstract Laminated sediment records from the oxygen minimum zone in the Arabian Sea offer unique ultrahigh-resolution archives for deciphering climate variability in the Arabian Sea region. Although numerous analytical techniques are available it has become increasingly popular during the past decade to analyze relative variations of sediment cores' chemical signature by non-destructive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning. We carefully selected an approximately 5 m long sediment core from the northern Arabian Sea (GeoB12309-5: 24°52.3' N; 62°59.9' E, 956 m water depth) for a detailed, comparative study of high-resolution techniques, namely non-destructive XRF core scanning (0.8 mm resolution) and ICP-MS/OES analysis on carefully selected, discrete samples (1 mm resolution). The aim of our study was to more precisely define suitable chemical elements that can be accurately analyzed and to determine which elemental ratios can be interpretated down to sub-millimeter-scale resolutions. Applying the Student's t-test our results show significantly correlating (1% significance level) elemental patterns for all S, Ca, Fe, Zr, Rb, and Sr, as well as the K/Ca, Fe/Ti and Ti/Al ratios that are all related to distinct lithological changes. After careful consideration of all errors for the ICP analysis we further provide respective factors of XRF Core Scanner software error's underestimation by applying Chi-square-tests, which is especially relevant for elements with high count rates. As demonstrated by these new, ultra-high resolution data core scanning has major advantages (high-speed, low costs, few sample preparation steps) and represents an increasingly required alternative over the time consuming, expensive, elaborative, and destructive wet chemical analyses (e.g., by ICP-MS/OES after acid digestions), and meanwhile also provides high-quality data in unprecedented resolution.

Abstract We present uranium-thoriumchronology for a 102 mcore through a Pleistocene reef at Tahiti (French Polynesia) sampled during IODP Expedition 310 "Tahiti Sea Level". We employ total and partial dissolution procedures on the older coral samples to investigate the diagenetic overprint of the uranium-thoriumsystem. Although alteration of the U-Th system cannot be robustly corrected, diagenetic trends in the U-Th data, combined with sea level and subsidence constraints for the growth of the corals enables the age of critical samples to be constrained to marine isotope stage 9. We use the ages of the corals, together with d18O based sea-level histories, to provide maximum constraints on possible paleo water-depths. These depth constraints are then compared to independent depth estimates based on algal and foraminiferal assemblages, microbioerosion patterns, and sedimentary facies, confirming the accuracy of these paleo water-depth estimates. We also use the fact that corals could not have grown above sea level to place amaximumconstraint on the subsidence rate of Tahiti to be 0.39 m ka**-1,with the most likely rate being close to the existing minimum estimate of 0.25m ka**-1.

Abstract Carbon isotope measurements were made on bulk sediments from the Paleogene calcareous sequence recovered at Ocean Drilling Program Site 762 (Hole 762C) on the central Exmouth Plateau, eastern Indian Ocean. The very positive d13C values that characterize the early/late Paleocene boundary and the very rapid trend toward lighter values in the latest Paleocene, as observed at other sites worldwide, are clearly present in the record from Hole 762C, as is the short excursion to extremely light values close to the Paleocene/Eocene boundary. The highest values in the upper Paleocene maximum at Site 762 are close to those at mid-latitude South Atlantic sites on Walvis Ridge, but slightly lower than those from the high latitude Sites 689 and 690 (65?S; Maud Rise, Weddell Sea). These d13C events will be of value in long-distance stratigraphic correlations; especially the short, but extreme excursion at the end of the Paleocene may be useful in clearing up the stratigraphic correlation problems for that interval. Site 762 values for the upper Eocene resemble the pattern at Walvis Ridge more closely than do the values for Sites 689 and 690 (Maud Rise); the latter showed a positive excursion in that interval. The bulk carbon isotopic record seems to be more similar between low- and mid-latitude sites, even in different ocean basins, than between low and high latitudes.

Abstract From the Editorial Introduction: If the first volume of Speculations was enough of an explicit wager, a willing blind leap in the terra incognita of the publishing world, then this volume forces us to stop and evaluate the reasons for the journal's protracted existence. This is all the more important when we consider how the range of meanings of the term 'speculative realism' seems to be growing-with increasing numbers of thinkers situating themselves in its trail, or holding a somewhat cautious interest in it-while its e ective reference seems nowhere to be found. ..
