    Abstract The bioactive compounds of coffee are involved in lipid metabolism, and sex differences may play an important role. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of sex differences on serum lipid profiles among habitual coffee drinkers. We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study of 23,628 adults using data obtained from the Taiwan Biobank database. Adults who drank more than one cup of coffee per day and those who drank less than one cup per day were compared with non-drinkers. After adjusting for baseline demographics and lifestyle, a generalized linear model was used to estimate the change in serum lipid profiles in men and women and in postmenopausal and premenopausal women among different coffee-drinking behaviors. We found that habitual coffee consumption changed the serum lipid profiles of men and women. Further, coffee drinkers had higher serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and lower serum triglyceride levels than non-drinkers. Compared with premenopausal women, both men and postmenopausal women had increased serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Menopausal status may play an important role in modulating the effect of habitual coffee intake on dyslipidemia. Moreover, premenopausal women potentially benefit more from habitual coffee drinking than men and postmenopausal women.

    Abstract Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), a new category of contaminants currently in the limelight, are a major issue of global concern. The pervasive nature of CECs and their harmful effects, such as cancer, reproductive disorders, neurotoxicity, etc., make the situation alarming. The perilous nature of CECs lies in the fact that even very small concentrations of CECs can cause great impacts on living beings. They also have a nature of bioaccumulation. Thus, there is a great need to have efficient sensors for the detection of CECs to ensure a safe living environment. Electrochemical sensors are an efficient platform for CEC detection as they are highly selective, sensitive, stable, reproducible, and prompt, and can detect very low concentrations of the analyte. Major classes of CECs are pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, newly registered pesticides, and disinfection by-products. This review focusses on CECs, including their sources and pathways, health effects caused by them, and electrochemical sensors as reported in the literature under each category for the detection of major CECs.

    Abstract Background: Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) has emerged as an effective approach for acute leukemia, primarily due to the inherent difficulty in finding human leukocyte antigen-matched unrelated donors (MUD). Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether haplo-HSCT and MUD-HSCT can provide comparable outcomes in patients with acute leukemia.
    Aims: This study aimed to assess the overall survival (OS) and leukemia-free survival (LFS) outcomes between the MUD-HSCT and haplo-HSCT groups.
    Methods and results: This retrospective analysis encompassed adult patients with acute leukemia undergoing the initial allo-HSCT. Among these 85 patients, we stratified 33 patients into the MUD-HSCT group and 52 to the haplo-HSCT group. The primary outcomes were OS and LFS. The median OS was not reached in the haplo-HSCT group, while it reached 29.8 months in patients undergoing MUD-HSCT (p = .211). Likewise, the median LFS periods were 52.6 months in the haplo-HSCT group and 12.7 months in the MUD-HSCT group (p = .212). Importantly, neither the OS nor LFS showed substantial differences between the MUD-HSCT and haplo-HSCT groups. Furthermore, univariate analyses revealed that haplo-HSCT did not demonstrate a significantly higher risk of worse LFS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.38-1.25; p = .216) or OS (HR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.36-1.26; p = .214) than MUD-HSCT. Notably, a high European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation risk score (HR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.10-1.87; p = .007) and non-complete remission (HR, 2.48; 95% CI, 1.17-5.23; p = .017) were significantly correlated with worse OS.
    Conclusion: Haplo-HSCT may serve as an alternative to MUD-HSCT for the treatment of acute leukemia, offering similar survival outcomes.

    Abstract Breaststroker's knee is an overuse syndrome resulting from similar repetitive movements in competitive swimmers that has been described in the orthopedic literature. The typical symptoms are medial knee pain with tenderness to palpation at the tibial collateral ligament or inferomedial patella. Despite these localizing symptoms on clinical exam, arthroscopic studies have failed to demonstrate a specific structural abnormality corresponding to this syndrome, although some have reported thickened medial synovial plica, medial-predominant synovitis or patellofemoral cartilage loss in association knee pain with breaststroke swimmers. We present a case of medial knee pain in a young breaststroke swimmer with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of marrow edema in the anterior aspect of the medial femoral condyle. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of MRI findings in breaststroker's knee .

    Abstract Super-sensitive malathion detection was achieved using a nonenzymatic electrochemical sensor based on a CuO/ZnO-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Due to the high affinity between the Cu element and the sulfur groups in malathion, the developed CuO-ZnO/GCE sensor may bond malathion with ease, inhibiting the redox signal of the Cu element when malathion is present. In addition to significantly increasing the ability of electron transfer, the addition of 3D-flower-like ZnO enhances active sites of the sensor interface for the high affinity of malathion, giving the CuO-ZnO/GCE composite an exceptional level of sensitivity and selectivity. This enzyme-free CuO-ZnO/GCE malathion sensor demonstrates outstanding stability and excellent detection performance under optimal operating conditions with a wide linear range of malathion from 0 to 200 nM and a low detection limit of 1.367 nM. A promising alternative technique for organophosphorus pesticide (OP) determination is offered by the analytical performance of the proposed sensor, and this method can be quickly and sensitively applied to samples that have been contaminated with these pesticides.

    Abstract This study established a feature-enhanced adversarial semi-supervised semantic segmentation model to automatically annotate pulmonary embolism (PE) lesion areas in computed tomography pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) images. In the current study, all of the PE CTPA image segmentation methods were trained by supervised learning. However, when CTPA images come from different hospitals, the supervised learning models need to be retrained and the images need to be relabeled. Therefore, this study proposed a semi-supervised learning method to make the model applicable to different datasets by the addition of a small number of unlabeled images. By training the model with both labeled and unlabeled images, the accuracy of unlabeled images was improved and the labeling cost was reduced. Our proposed semi-supervised segmentation model included a segmentation network and a discriminator network. We added feature information generated from the encoder of the segmentation network to the discriminator so that it could learn the similarities between the prediction label and ground truth label. The HRNet-based architecture was modified and used as the segmentation network. This HRNet-based architecture could maintain a higher resolution for convolutional operations to improve the prediction of small PE lesion areas. We used a labeled open-source dataset and an unlabeled National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) (IRB number: B-ER-108-380) dataset to train the semi-supervised learning model, and the resulting mean intersection over union (mIOU), dice score, and sensitivity reached 0.3510, 0.4854, and 0.4253, respectively, on the NCKUH dataset. Then we fine-tuned and tested the model with a small number of unlabeled PE CTPA images in a dataset from China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) (IRB number: CMUH110-REC3-173). Comparing the results of our semi-supervised model with those of the supervised model, the mIOU, dice score, and sensitivity improved from 0.2344, 0.3325, and 0.3151 to 0.3721, 0.5113, and 0.4967, respectively. In conclusion, our semi-supervised model can improve the accuracy on other datasets and reduce the labor cost of labeling with the use of only a small number of unlabeled images for fine-tuning.
