    Abstract Groundwater is a vital resource for local human life and production in the oasis zone of the Cherchen River Basin of Xinjiang. Understanding the controlling factors of groundwater salinization and pollution is of great significance for the sustainable utilization of groundwater resources and protection of the ecological environment in desert oasis areas. In light of this, a total of 36 single structure unconfined groundwater samples and 54 multi-layered structure unconfined and confined groundwater samples were collected from the oasis zone of the Cherchen River Basin and evaluated for the distribution characteristics and pollution status of major ions. Hydrogeochemical methods (e.g., Piper diagram, multivariate statistics, Gibbs model, and relationships among ions) were used to determine the main controlling factors of groundwater salinization and pollution. Differences in hydrogeochemical zonation were found from the single structure unconfined aquifers in sloping plains of piedmont areas to the multi-layered structure unconfined and confined aquifers in alluvial-proluvial plain areas, and Cl-Na (87.8%) was the main hydrochemical type in the groundwater of the study area.     Abstract Sugar content is an essential indicator for evaluating crisp pear quality and categorization, being used for fruit quality identification and market sales prediction. In this study, we paired a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm with genetic algorithm optimization to reliably estimate the sugar content in crisp pears. We evaluated the spectral data and actual sugar content in crisp pears, then applied three preprocessing methods to the spectral data: standard normal variable transformation (SNV), multivariate scattering correction (MSC), and convolution smoothing (SG). Support vector regression (SVR) models were built using processing approaches. According to the findings, the SVM model preprocessed with convolution smoothing (SG) was the most accurate, with a correlation coefficient 0.0742 higher than that of the raw spectral data. Based on this finding, we used competitive adaptive reweighting (CARS) and the continuous projection algorithm (SPA) to select key representative wavelengths from the spectral data. Finally, we used the retrieved characteristic wavelength data to create a support vector machine model (GASVR) that was genetically tuned. The correlation coefficient of the SG-GASVR model in the prediction set was higher by 0.0321 and the root mean square prediction error (RMSEP) was lower by 0.0267 compared with those of the SG-SVR model. The SG-CARS-GASVR model had the highest correlation coefficient, at 0.8992. In conclusion, the developed SG-CARS-GASVR model provides a reliable method for detecting the sugar content in crisp pear using hyperspectral technology, thereby increasing the accuracy and efficiency of the quality assessment of crisp pear.

    Abstract Aim: To determine the efficacy and safety of pedicled conjunctival lacrimal duct reconstruction in the treatment of severe obstruction of superior and inferior lacrimal canaliculi with conjunctivochalasis.
    Methods: This study was performed as a retrospective analysis of patients who received conjunctival dacryocystorhinostomy with pedicled conjunctival flap reconstruction combined with tube intubation due to severe superior and inferior lacrimal canalicular obstruction with conjunctivochalasis from January 2019 to October 2019. The clinical data included the degree of preoperative epiphora and postoperative relief, preoperative examination of lacrimal duct computed tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy, postoperative evaluation of lacrimal duct function by chloramphenicol taste and fluorescein dye disappearance test,
    Results: All 9 patients (9 eyes) had severe canalicular obstruction with conjunctivochalasis. The patients included 4 males and 5 females aged between 47-65y with an average age of 52.2±6.7y. At 3mo follow-up, the tube was removed and the patients were followed for a further 3mo. After tube removal, 6 patients showed no epiphora. These patients also had positive chloramphenicol tastes and normal fluorescein dye disappearance test results. Two patientshad epiphora. Also, syringing showed partial patency of the reconstructed lacrimal duct. One patient had no improvement in epiphora with negative chloramphenicol taste and fluorescein dye disappearance test results and obstruction of the reconstructed lacrimal duct. The total effective rate of the operation was 8/9, with no serious complications.
    Conclusion: Pedicled conjunctival lacrimal duct reconstruction conjunctival dacryocystorhinostomy is safe and effective for superior and inferior canalicular obstruction with conjunctivochalasis.

    Abstract Increasing attention is being given to magnetic iron-based nanoparticles (MINPs) because of their potential environmental benefits. Owing to the earth abundance and high utilization of MINPs, as well as the significant functions of Fe in sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation, an understanding of the environmental fate of MINPs is indispensable. However, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the largely unknown environmental behaviors and fate of MINPs in soil-plant system. Thus, this review summarizes recent literature on the biogeochemical behavior (uptake, transportation, and transformation) of MINPs in soil and plants. The different possible uptake (e.g., foliar and root adsorption) and translocation (e.g., xylem, phloem, symplastic/apoplastic pathway, and endocytosis) pathways are discussed. Furthermore, drivers of MINPs uptake and transportation (e.g., soil characteristics, fertilizer treatments, copresence of inorganic and organic anions, meteorological conditions, and cell wall pores) in both soil and plant environments are summarized. This review also details the physical, chemical, and biological transformations of MINPs in soil-plant system. More importantly, a metadata analysis from the existing literature was employed to investigate the distinction between MINPs and other engineering nanoparticles biogeochemical behavior. In the future, more attention should be given to understanding the behavior of MINPs in soil-plant system and improving the capabilities of predictive models. This review thus highlights the main knowledge gaps regarding MINPs behavior and fate to provide guidance for their safe application in agrochemicals, crop production, and soil health.

    Abstract We experimentally establish a 3 × 3 cross-shaped micro-ring resonator (MRR) array-based photonic multiplexing architecture relying on silicon photonics to achieve parallel edge extraction operations in images for photonic convolution neural networks. The main mathematical operations involved are convolution. Precisely, a faster convolutional calculation speed of up to four times is achieved by extracting four feature maps simultaneously with the same photonic hardware's structure and power consumption, where a maximum computility of 0.742 TOPS at an energy cost of 48.6 mW and a convolution accuracy of 95.1% is achieved in an MRR array chip. In particular, our experimental results reveal that this system using parallel edge extraction operators instead of universal operators can improve the imaging recognition accuracy for CIFAR-10 dataset by 6.2% within the same computing time, reaching a maximum of 78.7%. This work presents high scalability and efficiency of parallel edge extraction chips, furnishing a novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach to boost photonic computing speed.

    Abstract Osteoporosis, characterized by bone metabolism disruption leading to gradual bone loss and increased fracture susceptibility, is linked to the excessive activation of osteoclasts. Pseudolaric acid B (PAB), identified as an NF-κB signaling inhibitor crucial for osteoclastogenesis, is explored here for its protective effects in osteoporosis. Noncytotoxic PAB's impact on osteoclast differentiation was assessed through cell viability and osteoclast formation assays, with subsequent testing of osteoclast function via bone resorption assays. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction evaluated PAB's genetic-level impact on osteoclastogenesis. Network pharmacology, western blot, and luciferase reporter gene assays were employed to elucidate PAB's regulatory mechanism. In an in vivo model of osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy (OVX) in mice, micro-CT, H&E staining, and TRAP staining facilitated histomorphometry analysis, while flow cytometry verified macrophage polarization. PAB demonstrated inhibitory effects on osteoclast formation and bone resorption in BMM and RAW264.7 cells, suppressing osteoclast-specific genes. Bioinformatic analysis, western blot, and luciferase assay results indicated PAB's inhibition of IκBα phosphorylation in the NF-κB signaling pathway and ERK in MAPKs, elucidating its mechanism. In vivo experiments confirmed PAB's attenuation of osteoporosis by reducing osteoclast formation in OVX mice. PAB further facilitated macrophage conversion from M1 to M2 and suppressed IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 synthesis. In conclusion, PAB prevents osteoporosis by inhibiting RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis through NF-κB and ERK signaling pathway suppression, coupled with macrophage polarization. These findings indicate the potential therapeutic role of PAB in osteoporosis.

    Abstract The moisture with salt ions adsorbed on the mineral soil surface is crucial to the cohesion process when the media is exposed to marine or coastal environments. However, the impact of salinity on the cohesion of soils is not well studied at the nanoscale. In this study, the salinity effect was investigated by studying the wettability and capillary force of NaCl solutions on quartz substrates via a molecular dynamics-based approach. Besides, a new visualization method was proposed to measure the contact angle of liquid droplets from the aspect of nanoscale. The results indicated that salt ions can weaken the wettability of the liquid on the quartz surface and inhibit the capillary force. Compared with water, the liquid with a 10% NaCl solution can achieve a capillary force reduction of around 70%, resulting in a detrimental effect on the cohesion of soils. Overall, this study enhanced the understanding of the nanoscale salinity effect on the cohesion process and provided insights into the modification of the mechanical properties of soils from the aspect of nanoscale.
