    Abstract Introduction: The association between areca nut consumption and oral cancer has been a subject of increasing concern in global public health.
    Global perspective: Areca nut, often chewed in various forms such as betel quid, is deeply rooted in cultural practices across Asia and other parts of the world. Epidemiological studies consistently reveal a significant correlation between areca nut use and the incidence of oral cancer, emphasizing the need for targeted preventive measures. The complex interplay of areca nut's bioactive compounds, particularly arecoline, with cellular processes, contributes to the initiation and progression of oral carcinogenesis. Mechanistic insights into the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of its components underscore the urgency for comprehensive public health interventions.
    Public health: Efforts to address this public health challenge involve multidisciplinary approaches, encompassing education, policy implementation, and behavioral interventions. Understanding the socio-cultural factors influencing areca nut consumption is pivotal for designing effective awareness campaigns and cessation programs.

    Abstract The objective of this research was focused on the design and development of luliconazole-loaded polymeric micelle hydrogel (LUL-PM-CHG) using quality by design (QbD) principle to improve the penetration and retention of LUL in the skin. The optimization of the formulation involved the utilization of a Box-Behnken design with three factors and three levels. The impact of specific formulation variables, namely the ratio of poloxamer P123 and F127, sonication time, and the quantity of drug, was investigated in terms of particle size, micellar incorporation efficiency, and polydispersity index. The LUL-loaded P123/F127 mixed micelles involved the thin film hydration method for thin preparation. The characteristics of optimized formulation include a particle size of 226 ± 8.52 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.153 ± 0.002, a zeta potential (ZP) of 30.15 ± 2.32 mV, and a micellar incorporation efficiency (MIE) of 88.38 ± 3.84%.     Abstract The scientific view on dairy fats is undergoing a change. While at one time they were associated with negative health effects, recent scientific research has provided new insights into the functional benefits of dairy fats and their fatty acids. This changing scientific view on dairy fats is also resulting in a scientific interest in Ghee, the clarified butter obtained from milk. Ghee, besides being a traditional milk product of cultural importance in India and finding extensive use in its cuisines, is also one of the most important ingredients of the materia medica of Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine that originated in India. While modern scientific literature has limited studies on functional benefits of ghee, Ayurveda literature extensively catalogues the therapeutic potential of ghee and details different types of ghee based on source of milk, manufacturing method, maturation and physical phase. This work reviewed the Ayurveda literature on health benefits of ghee and examined the complementarity and gaps between Ayurveda literature and modern scientific literature to identify research questions and hypotheses for further exploring the therapeutic potential of ghee. The Ayurveda literature review involved curation of references to ghee in eleven important Ayurvedic texts spanning over 3000 years. 4000 references to milk and milk products were curated from these texts, of which 2913 mentions were in the context of therapeutic benefits of milk products. Of these, ghee had 774 mentions, the highest amongst milk-based products. These mentions were grouped into 15 benefit clusters. A review of ghee in modern literature published between 1990 and 2023 was also conducted. A comparison of this with the Ayurveda literature showed that there were major differences in the focus areas of health between the two. While recent research primarily focused on ghee's connection with cardiovascular health, wound healing and skin health, Ayurveda prioritized cognitive benefits, gastrointestinal health, and nourishing. These later areas are of growing importance to human health as global population ages, and chronic and brain related diseases start dominating public health concerns. As scientists search for solutions to these, ghee, its usage and formulations in Ayurveda and the detailed associations between ghee's animal source, processing, maturation, phases and health benefits, may have scientific insights to offer that can guide future research.

    Abstract Tuberculosis can alter the permeability of the pleura and result in tuberculous pleural effusion. Clinical manifestation is similar to malignant pleural effusion making it challenging to distinguish. Tumor marker cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) level of pleural fluid could be an alternative in diagnosing tuberculous pleural effusion. We reported a case of a 41-year-old female with shortness of breath and a history of chronic kidney disease, acute decompensated heart failure, and community-acquired pneumonia. The patient underwent tuberculosis examination and yielded negative result, yet the serum CA-125 examination yielded positive result. A literature search was performed on electronic databases with appropriate search terms based on the established clinical question and a total of three cross-sectional studies were selected based on the eligibility criteria. CA-125 level of pleural fluid sample was found to have a good diagnostic value compared to the blood serum sample. However, further research is necessary to determine a proper cut-off value for a significant result.

    Abstract COVID-19 or coronavirus disease is a pneumonia-like condition caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus. Many mutations of this virus have emerged throughout the two-year period of this pandemic. However, clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, and treatment of COVID-19 remain relatively unchanged. Various substances have been assessed for their functions as COVID-19 immunomodulators. Said substances in this article include aspirin, vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc, and selenium. Aspirin was found to reduce mortality risk and embolism events. Vitamin C did not seem to improve mechanical ventilation-free days but did improve oxygenation (PaO2/FiO2), peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2), and body temperature in severe COVID-19 patients. Vitamin D3 was not significantly different compared to placebo in improving mortality in hospitalized patients. However, respiratory tract infection (COVID-19 included) events were lower in individuals given vitamin D3 compared to those who were not. Zinc combined with ascorbic acid caused a quick reduction in symptoms but was not significant compared to zinc alone, ascorbic acid alone, or standard care. Individuals with lower levels of selenium were found to have worse outcomes of COVID-19 compared to those with high levels of selenium. However, further studies, especially clinical trials, are needed. Asprinol is a drug that contains vitamins and minerals plus aspirin which are suggested to help alleviate symptoms and improve outcomes of COVID-19. This review aims to assess the efficacy of asprinol contents in COVID-19 patients.

    Abstract This study explored the use of millets flours as a secondary ingredient with soy protein isolate (SPI) to develop fibrous high moisture meat analogue (HMMA). Three millets (sorghum, pearl millet, and finger millet) with three incorporation levels (10%, 20%, and 30%) were extruded at 60%, 65%, and 70% moisture content. The results showed that millet type, incorporation level, and moisture content significantly influenced the system parameters and textural properties. Good visual texturization was achieved at addition of pearl millet up to 30% incorporation level and sorghum and finger millet up to 20% incorporation level. Furthermore, the textural properties of HMMA made from SPI-millet blends were compared against HMMA made from SPI-gluten blend and real chicken. The HMMA made from SPI-millet flour had lower hardness, chewiness, resilience, springiness, tensile strength, cutting strength than that for SPI and SPI-wheat gluten blend and were much closer to corresponding values for real chicken. The results also showed that each of the three millet types generated distinctly different fibre patterns (thick to thin fibres) and colour (whiter to darker) of HMMA. Thus, HMMA produced from SPI-millet flour blends can offer a wide textural, fibre pattern and colour space for different plant-based meat applications. Since millets do not have gluten, they also offer an opportunity to make gluten-free HMMA's.
