Abstract Much debate nowadays is devoted to the impacts of modern information and communication technology on global carbon emissions. Green information and communication technology is a paradigm creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly computing field that tries to minimize the adverse effects on the environment. Green information and communication technology are under constant development nowadays. Thus, in this paper, we undertake the problem of performance bugs that, until recently, have never been studied so profoundly. We assume that inappropriate software implementations can have a crucial influence on global carbon emissions. Here, we classify those performance bugs and develop inappropriate implementations of four programs written in C++. To mitigate these simulated performance bugs, measuring software and hardware methods that can estimate the increased carbon footprint properly were proposed.

Abstract Association rule mining is intended for searching for the relationships between attributes in transaction databases. The whole process of rule discovery is very complex, and involves pre-processing techniques, a rule mining step, and post-processing, in which visualization is carried out. Visualization of discovered association rules is an essential step within the whole association rule mining pipeline, to enhance the understanding of users on the results of rule mining. Several association rule mining and visualization methods have been developed during the past decades. This review paper aims to create a literature review, identify the main techniques published in peer-reviewed literature, examine each method's main features, and present the main applications in the field. Defining the future steps of this research area is another goal of this review paper.

Abstract Numerical association rule mining offers a very efficient way of mining association rules, where algorithms can operate directly with categorical and numerical attributes. These methods are suitable for mining different transaction databases, where data are entered sequentially. However, little attention has been paid to the time series numerical association rule mining, which offers a new technique for extracting association rules from time series data. This paper presents a new algorithmic method for time series numerical association rule mining and its application in smart agriculture. We offer a concept of a hardware environment for monitoring plant parameters and a novel data mining method with practical experiments. The practical experiments showed the method's potential and opened the door for further extension.

Abstract Governments around the world are looking for ways to manage economic consequences of COVID-19 and promote economic development. The aim of this study is to identify the areas where the application of economic policy measures would enhance the resilience of societies on epidemic risks. We use data on the COVID-19 pandemic outcome in a large number of countries. With the estimation of multiple econometric models, we identify areas being a reasonable choice for economic policy intervention. It was found that viable remediation actions worth taking can be identified either for long-, mid-, or short-term horizons, impacting the equality, healthcare sector, and national economy characteristics. We suggest encouraging research and development based on innovative technologies linked to industries in healthcare, pharmaceutical, and biotech, promoting transformation of healthcare systems based on new technologies, providing access to quality healthcare, promoting public healthcare providers, and investing in the development of regional healthcare infrastructure, as a tool of equal regional development based on economic assessment. Further, a central element of this study, i.e. the innovative identification matrix, could be populated as a unique policy framework, either for latest pandemic or any similar outbreaks in future.

Abstract With the advent of big data, interest for new data mining methods has increased dramatically. The main drawback of traditional data mining methods is the lack of comprehensibility. In this paper, the firefly algorithm was employed for standalone binary classification, where each solution is represented by two classification rules that are easy understandable by users. Implicitly, the feature selection is also performed by the algorithm. The results of experiments, conducted on three well-known datasets publicly available on web, were comparable with the results of the traditional methods in terms of accuracy and, therefore, the huge potential was exhibited by the proposed method.

Abstract Computational Intelligence methods for automatic generation of sport training plans in individual sport disciplines have achieved a mature phase. In order to confirm their added value, they have been deployed into practice. As a result, several methods have been developed for generating well formulated training plans on computers automatically that, typically, depend on the collection of past sport activities. However, monitoring the realization of the performed training sessions still represents a bottleneck in automating the process of sport training as a whole. The objective of this paper is to present a new low-cost and efficient embedded device for monitoring the realization of sport training sessions that is dedicated to monitor cycling training sessions. We designed and developed a new bike computer, i.e. the AST-Monitor, that can be mounted easily on almost every bicycle. The aforementioned bike computer is based on the Raspberry Pi device that supports different external sensors for capturing the data during the realization of sport training sessions. An adjusted GUI tailored to the needs of athletes is developed, along with the hardware. The proof of concept study, using the AST-Monitor in practice, revealed the potential of the proposed solution for monitoring of realized sport training sessions automatically. The new device also opens the door for the future utilization of Artificial Intelligence in a wide variety of sports.

Abstract This paper aims to find a superior strategy for the daily trading on a portfolio of stocks for which traditional trading strategies perform poorly due to the low frequency of new information. The experimental work is divided into a set of traditional trading strategies and a set of long short-term memory networks. The networks incorporate general and specific trading patterns, where the former takes into account the universal decision factors for trading across many stocks, while the latter takes into account stock-specific decision factors. Our research shows that both long short-term memory networks, regardless of whether they are based on universal or stock-specific decision factors, significantly outperform traditional trading strategies. Interestingly, however, on average neither has the edge compared to the other, thus remaining ambivalent as to whether universality or specificality is to be preferred when it comes to designing long short-term memory networks for optimal trading.

Abstract The rapid development of computer science and telecommunications has brought new ways and practices to sport training. The artificial sport trainer, founded on computational intelligence algorithms, has gained momentum in the last years. However, artificial sport trainer usually suffers from a lack of automatisation in realization and control phases of the training. In this study, the Digital Twin is proposed as a framework for helping athletes, during realization of training sessions, to make the proper decisions in situations they encounter. The digital twin for artificial sport trainer is based on the cognitive model of humans. This concept has been applied to cycling, where a version of the system on a Raspberry Pi already exists. The results of porting the digital twin on the mentioned platform shows promising potential for its extension to other sport disciplines.

Abstract Population health and wellbeing is both a result, as well as a driver, of economic development and prosperity on global, European, national and sub-national (local) levels. Wales, one of the four United Kingdom (UK) nations, has shown a long-term commitment to sustainable development and achieving prosperity for all, providing a good example of both national and sub-national level, which can be useful for other European countries and regions. In this paper, the economic importance of the healthcare sector to the Welsh economy is explored. We use a large number of data sources for the UK and Welsh economy to derive an economic model for 2017. We estimate output, income, employment, value-added, and import multipliers of the healthcare sector. Results suggest that the healthcare sector has an above average contribution in four explored economic aspects of the Welsh economy (output, income, employment, value-added), according to its impact on the surrounding economic ecosystem. Also, it is below average regarding leaking through imports. The multipliers' values offer empirical evidence when deciding on alternative policy actions. Such actions can be used as a stimulus for encouraging regional development and post-COVID economic recovery. Our study refers to the Welsh healthcare sector's economic impact as a whole. Therefore, we suggest investigating the economic impact of individual healthcare providers in the future.
