    Abstract The production of prompt D^{0} mesons in proton-lead collisions in both the forward and backward rapidity regions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The nuclear modification factor of prompt D^{0} mesons is determined as a function of the transverse momentum p_{T}, and the rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame y^{*}. In the forward rapidity region, significantly suppressed production with respect to pp collisions is measured, which provides significant constraints on models of nuclear parton distributions and hadron production down to the very low Bjorken-x region of ∼10^{-5}. In the backward rapidity region, a suppression with a significance of 2.0-3.8 standard deviations compared to parton distribution functions in a nuclear environment expectations is found in the kinematic region of p_{T}>6  GeV/c and -3.25<y^{*}<-2.5, corresponding to x∼0.01.<br />

    Abstract The nuclear modification factor of neutral pions is measured in proton-lead collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector. The π^{0} production cross section is measured differentially in transverse momentum (p_{T}) for 1.5<p_{T}<10.0  GeV and in center-of-mass pseudorapidity (η_{c.m.}) regions 2.5<η_{c.m.}<3.5 (forward) and -4.0<η_{c.m.}<-3.0 (backward) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The forward measurement shows a sizable suppression of π^{0} production, while the backward measurement shows the first evidence of π^{0} enhancement in proton-lead collisions at the LHC. Together, these measurements provide precise constraints on models of nuclear structure and particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions.

    Abstract Fungal infections represent a serious health problem worldwide. The study evaluated the antifungal activity of 4-chlorobenzyl p-coumarate, an unprecedented semi-synthetic molecule. Docking molecular and assay experiments were conducted to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC), mode of action, effect on growth, fungal death kinetics, drug association, effects on biofilm, micromorphology, and against human keratinocytes. The investigation included 16 strains of Candida spp, including C. albicans, C. krusei, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. dubliniensis, C. lusitaniae, C. utilis, C. rugosa, C. guilhermondi, and C. parapsilosis. Docking analysis predicted affinity between the molecule and all tested targets. MIC and MFC values ranged from 3.9 µg/mL (13.54 µM) to 62.5 µg/mL (217.01 µM), indicating a probable effect on the plasma membrane. The molecule inhibited growth from the first hour of testing. Association with nystatin proved to be indifferent. All concentrations of the molecule reduced fungal biofilm. The compound altered fungal micromorphology. The tested compound exhibited an IC50 of 7.90 ± 0.40 µg/mL (27.45 ± 1.42 µM) for keratinocytes. 4-chlorobenzyl p-coumarate showed strong fungicidal effects, likely through its action on the plasma membrane and alteration of fungal micromorphology, and mildly cytotoxic to human keratinocytes.

    Abstract The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy sqrt[s_{NN}]=5  TeV is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity (η) and transverse momentum (p_{T}) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of η between -4.8<η<-2.5 (backward region) and 2.0<η<4.8 (forward region), and p_{T} between 0.2<p_{T}<8.0  GeV/c. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for p_{T} larger than 1.5  GeV/c. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to 10^{-6}.

    Abstract The western Amazon basin is an important endemic area for malaria by P. vivax. In recent years, several reports showed the treatment failure with chloroquine, which can be related to resistance. The assessment of chloroquine resistance requires the evaluation of drug exposure, and when possible, the estimation of the pharmacokinetic parameters. However, there is no data on the pharmacokinetics of chloroquine in this endemic area. Moreover, the influence of the early reappearance of parasites in blood on the exposure to the drug was low exploited in the literature. The present study described the pharmacokinetic parameters of chloroquine in whole blood of adult patients with P. vivax malaria from the western Brazilian Amazon basin and compared the area under the curve (AUC) with the parasitological outcome at day 28. A total of 19 patients with parasite recurrence within 28 days and 20 patients with no recurrence were included in the study. Chloroquine was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated by non-compartmental modeling. The maximum concentration ranged from 1285 to 2030 ng/mL. The terminal half-life varied from 5.3 to 12.8 days. The volume of distribution from 1090 to 2340 L/kg, and the area under the curve to the last measurable concentration from 247 to 432 ng/mL.h. The pharmacokinetic parameters were similar in both groups, which suggests the lack of influence of early reappearance of parasites on chloroquine pharmacokinetics.
