    Abstract Objectives: Asthma disproportionately affects Black people and people with low incomes, but Medicaid expansion (hereinafter, expansion) data on these populations are limited. We investigated health care use among adults with asthma, before and after expansion, and examined whether asthma-related health care use after expansion varied by demographic characteristics.
    Methods: We analyzed data from the 2011-2013 and 2015-2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Adult Asthma Call-Back Survey on participants aged 18-64 years with current asthma and low incomes in 23 US states. We assessed 5 asthma-related outcomes, including medical visits (routine and emergency) and medication use, for expansion and nonexpansion groups. We used
    Results: Primary analyses (N = 10 796) found no significant associations between expansion and any outcome. Analyses stratified by race and ethnicity found no significant changes (eg, asthma controller medication use among non-Hispanic Black participants in the expansion group was 24.1% [95% CI, 14.4%-37.5%] in 2011-2013 and 35.5% [95% CI, 27.0%-45.1%] in 2015-2019;
    Conclusions: Investigating factors other than health insurance (eg, social determinants of health) that influence the use of asthma-related health care could advance knowledge of potential strategies to advance health equity for adults with asthma and lower incomes.

    Abstract The devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted rapid development and distribution of multiple vaccines. A 2-dose messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine developed by Moderna (Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine) was approved in December 2020 for the prevention of COVID-19. We describe a case of BCG vaccination scar reactivation in a 48-year-old man after he received the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine.

    Abstract In order to build artificial intelligence systems that can perceive and reason with human behavior in the real world, we must first design models that conduct complex spatio-temporal reasoning over motion sequences. Moving towards this goal, we propose the HumanMotionQA task to evaluate complex, multi-step reasoning abilities of models on long-form human motion sequences. We generate a dataset of question-answer pairs that require detecting motor cues in small portions of motion sequences, reasoning temporally about when events occur, and querying specific motion attributes. In addition, we propose NSPose, a neuro-symbolic method for this task that uses symbolic reasoning and a modular design to ground motion through learning motion concepts, attribute neural operators, and temporal relations. We demonstrate the suitability of NSPose for the HumanMotionQA task, outperforming all baseline methods.

    Abstract This study aimed to explore the applicability of VR-based language learning in an EFL context. An online survey was conducted to understand the structural relationship between EFL learners' cognitive absorption, behavioral intention to use VR for English learning, and perceptions regarding the sense of immersion created by VR. The hedonic motivation system adoption model (HMSAM) was adopted, and 230 valid responses were retrieved for statistical analyses. The results showed that most constructs of HMSAM, namely, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, curiosity, joy, control, behavioral intention to use, and immersion, were significantly associated with other constructs. VR's immersion had a positive significant influence on the behavioral intention of EFL learners to engage in VR-based language learning. It was revealed that curiosity was not a significant predictor for immersion. Moreover, a within-subject neurophysiological experiment was conducted with 33 EFL learners who experienced both VR-based and non-VR-based settings to examine the influence of VR technologies on their cognitive absorption and learning outcomes. Results demonstrated that VR did increase the participants' cognitive absorption; furthermore, participants had better retention about the learned contents in VR-based setting. The findings have practical and theoretical implications based on the findings of the survey and experiment.

    Abstract Drug development for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has been challenging due to poorly understood disease etiology, unpredictable disease progression, highly heterogeneous patient populations, and a lack of robust pharmacodynamic biomarkers. Moreover, because lung biopsy is invasive and dangerous, making the extent of fibrosis as a direct longitudinal measurement of IPF disease progression unfeasible, most clinical trials studying IPF can only assess progression of fibrosis indirectly through surrogate measures. This review discusses current state-of-art practices, identifies knowledge gaps, and brainstorms development opportunities for preclinical to clinical translation, clinical populations, pharmacodynamic endpoints, and dose optimization strategies. This article highlights clinical pharmacology perspectives in leveraging real-world data as well as modeling and simulation, special population considerations, and patient-centric approaches for designing future studies.

    Abstract Purpose of review: This review discusses climate change-related impacts on asthma and allergic-immunologic disease, relevant US public health efforts, and healthcare professional resources.
    Recent findings: Climate change can impact people with asthma and allergic-immunologic disease through various pathways, including increased exposure to asthma triggers (e.g., aeroallergens, ground-level ozone). Climate change-related disasters (e.g., wildfires, floods) disrupting healthcare access can complicate management of any allergic-immunologic disease. Climate change disproportionately affects some communities, which can exacerbate disparities in climate-sensitive diseases like asthma. Public health efforts include implementing a national strategic framework to help communities track, prevent, and respond to climate change-related health threats. Healthcare professionals can use resources or tools to help patients with asthma and allergic-immunologic disease prevent climate change-related health impacts. Climate change can affect people with asthma and allergic-immunologic disease and exacerbate health disparities. Resources and tools are available to help prevent climate change-related health impacts at the community and individual level.
