Abstract Objective: One of the potential factors that cause systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) development is autophagy. Immunity-related GTPase family M protein (IRGM) has been shown to be linked to immune-mediated diseases. The aim of the current study was to assess the role of the IRGM-autophagy gene in SLE susceptibility in an Egyptian population and its relation to lupus nephritis.
Methods: A case-control study was conducted in which a total of 200 subjects (100SLE and 100 healthy controls) were enrolled. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs10065172 and rs4958847) were genotyped. Genotypes and alleles analysis was conducted to compare between cases and controls, as well as a stratification analysis was conducted on the presence or absence of lupus nephritis.
Results: Among selected SNPs of IRGM, no association was found between both SNPs and SLE susceptibility. For rs10065172, the major expressed genotype was CC (61% and 71%) (Adj OR= 2.9, 95%= 0.545-15.5), followed by TC (34% and 27%) (Adj OR= 1.985, 95% = 0.357-11.041) in cases and controls, respectively. For rs4958847, AA and AG were comparably expressed in case [(43% and 39%) (Adj OR= 1.073, 95% = 0.483-2.382)] and control [(41% and 43%) (Adj OR= 1.24, 95% = 0.557- 2.763)], respectively. Additionally, no relationship among both SNPs and gender, lupus nephritis, disease activity, or disease duration, was observed.
Conclusion: IRGM SNPs (rs10065172 and rs4958847) expression was comparable among SLE patients and controls of the Egyptian cohort. Genotype and allele frequency of IRGM SNPs did not differ in lupus nephritis and non-lupus nephritis patients.

Abstract This study provides H 2 gas as a renewable energy source from sewage water splitting reaction using a PMT/Au photocathode. So, this study has a dual benefit for hydrogen generation; at the same time, it removes the contaminations of sewage water. The preparation of the PMT is carried out through the polymerization process from an acid medium. Then, the Au sputter was carried out using the sputter device under different times (1 and 2 min) for PMT/Au-1 min and PMT/Au-2min, respectively. The complete analyses confirm the chemical structure, such as XRD, FTIR, HNMR, SEM, and Vis-UV optical analyses. The prepared electrode PMT/Au is used for the hydrogen generation reaction using Na 2 S 2 O 3 or sewage water as an electrolyte. The PMT crystalline size is 15 nm. The incident photon to current efficiency ( IPCE ) efficiency increases from 2.3 to 3.6% (at 390 nm), and the number of H 2 moles increases from 8.4 to 33.1 mmol h −1 cm −2 for using Na 2 S 2 O 3 and sewage water as electrolyte, respectively. Moreover, all the thermodynamic parameters, such as activation energy ( E a ), enthalpy (Δ H *), and entropy (Δ S *), were calculated; additionally, a simple mechanism is mentioned for the water-splitting reaction.

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Luffa cylindrica (L.) M.Roem. has been recognized as traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases like inflammatory diseases, diarrhea and viral infections. The usual parts used include fruit, seeds and leaves.
Aim of the study: To evaluate the anticancer activity of the hot water extract of the whole plant of Luffa cylindrica using circulating tumor cells and cancer stem cells isolated from the peripheral blood of hepatocellular carcinoma patients in vitro.
Materials and methods: Seventy five adult patients who reported as stage II and III Hepatocellular carcinoma were selected. Blood samples were withdrawn and the circulating tumor cells were isolated from the whole blood. Tumor cells and cancer stem cells were detected and isolated by flow cytometric techniques. The isolated cell types were cultured and propagated in the tissue culture facility, the extract was tested on the isolated cells.
Results: Luffa cylindrica hot water extract has shown cytotoxic activity against circulating tumor cells of hepatocellular carcinoma especially the cells sub-population CD133
Conclusion: Hot water extract of Luffa cylindrica whole plant could decrease the ratio of cancer stem cells in blood of HCC patients and may be used to minimize recurrence and metastasis in hepatocellular carcinoma patients.

Abstract Background: Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland primarily at night. It has been suggested that melatonin may possess various cardiovascular benefits, including the potential to lower blood pressure. For this reason, we sought to identify and provide evidence of the effectiveness of melatonin on high arterial blood pressure in clinical trials.
Methods: Using the search term "melatonin and hypertension", a search of the ClinicalTrials.gov database was performed on October 10
Results: Of the 13 clinical trials identified, only three focused on examining the effects of melatonin. The study titles, enrollment numbers, conditions, statuses, interventions, and outcome measures have been explained in depth. Information gathered from these clinical trials will assist us in identifying the possible risks and benefits of melatonin with respect to high arterial blood pressure.
Conclusion: Melatonin has been shown to be an effective treatment for lowering blood pressure. More research is required to fully establish the potential benefits and risks and highlight the mechanisms through which melatonin may influence blood pressure regulation.

Abstract The 3-M syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It is characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation associated with characteristic features. In this study, we report on three patients from two unrelated families, including two male sibs, with the characteristic features and radiological findings of the 3-M syndrome. The main features in our cases were low birth weight, short stature, malar hypoplasia, anteverted nostrils with a fleshy nasal tip, long philtrum, pointed full chin, short broad neck, broad chest with transverse grooves of anterior thorax and hyperlordosis. An orodental examination revealed characteristic findings, some of which were not reported before. Prominent premaxilla, hypoplastic maxilla, thick patulous lips, high-arched palate, median fissured tongue, delayed eruption of teeth with enamel hypocalcification and malocclusion were present in our three studied cases. Radiographic studies showed slender long bones and ribs, a narrow pelvis and foreshortened vertebral bodies. Our reported cases are the offspring of healthy consanguineous parents, confirming the autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance in the syndrome. Cases were reported from different countries all over the world. To our knowledge, these are the first reported Egyptian patients with this rare disorder. This syndrome may be underreported because of the phenotypic overlap with other low birth dwarfism syndromes. Recent identification of a gene mutated in some cases of 3-M syndrome will aid diagnosis.
