Abstract This study reported the forensic parameters of the 29 Y-STR loci of 242 unrelated Qiang males in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County. Qiang population is a minority with small size populations and has never been reported. The overall haplotype diversity of Qiang population was measured to be 0.9992 while a discrimination capacity was 0.9215. According to the haplotypic analysis of the 29 Y-STR loci, 223 different haplotypes were obtained, of which 207 (92.83%) were unique. A total of 242 different alleles were checked at all loci, the corresponding allele frequencies ranged from 0.0041 to 0.7603. In addition, pairwise genetic distances, multidimensional scaling plots and neighbor-joining dendrogram were performed to analyze interpopulation differentiation between Qiang population and 16 other ethnic groups. These data can fill the gap in the Y-STR Haplotype Reference Database of the Qiang population and may be of reference value for forensic and population genetic analysis.

Abstract Our aim is to investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with hypertension among the Chinese Qiang population. From September 2012 to March 2013, a cross-sectional study was conducted in urban and rural communities of the Qiang population using multistage cluster sampling. A total of 2676 people aged above 20 years were enrolled in the analysis. Standardized mercury sphygmomanometer was used to measure the blood pressure twice after a 10-minute seated rest, and the average blood pressure was obtained. The hypertension prevalence among the population aged above 20 years was 13.9%, and age-standardized prevalence was 12.3%. Male and female prevalence of hypertension, as well as the prevalence in urban and rural areas, all increased with age. There were no significant differences between males and females and between urban and rural residents. Among hypertensive patients, 44.2% were aware of their hypertension, 38.0% were undergoing antihypertensive treatment, but only 10.5% achieved blood pressure control. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors of hypertension included age, low income, overweight and obesity, family history of hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension in Chinese Qiang adults is significantly lower than the national level. Awareness, treatment, and control rates of hypertension were low in the Qiang population. Thus, hypertension-related health knowledge should be more aggressively delivered to improve public awareness and the capacity of community health services should be strengthened.

Abstract In order to study the effective mechanism of a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), modified Jiu Wei Qiang Huo decoction (MJWQH), against H1N1-induced pneumonia in mice, we chose a holistic approach. A reverse-phase liquid chromatography with quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) was developed to determine metabolomic biomarkers in mouse serum for the MJWQH effects. Thirteen biomarkers of H1N1-induced pneumonia in mice serum were identified, which comprised l-valine, lauroylcarnitine, palmitoyl-l-carnitine, l-ornithine, uric acid, taurine, O-succinyl-l-homoserine, l-leucine, l-phenylalanine, PGF2α, 20-ethyl-PGE2, arachidonic acid, and glycerophospho-N-arachidonoyl ethanolamine. Among them, metabolites of amino acids, fatty acids and arachidonic acid had the most relevant changes in mice with H1N1-induced pneumonia. MJWQH effectively improved weight loss, lung index, biomarkers and inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 and phospholipase A2 in the infected mice. Importantly, MJWQH reversed the elevated biomarkers to the control levels from the infection, which provided a systematic view and a theoretical basis for its prevention or treatment. The results suggest that the protective effect of MJWQH against H1N1-induced pneumonia is possibly through regulation of pathways for amino acid, fatty acid and arachidonic acid metabolism. They also suggest that the LC-MS-based metabolomic strategy is a powerful tool for elucidation of the mechanisms of TCM.

Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to identify the associated risk factors among elderly citizens belonging to the Qiang ethnic minority group 3 years after the Wenchuan earthquake in China.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 287 respondents aged 60 years and older was conducted to collect data in Beichuan County, a heavily damaged area. PTSD was assessed according to the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. Independent demographic, socioeconomic and trauma exposure variables were also measured. Association between the independent variables and PTSD was analyzed using logistic regression analysis.
Results: The prevalence of PTSD was 22.65% among elderly Qiang citizens in Beichuan County. Being female, being widowed, having a low level of education, having low monthly income, suffering bodily injury, being bereaved, and having a low level of social support were risk factors significantly related to the development of PTSD.
Conclusion: The results indicate that PTSD remained at an elevated level among elderly Qiang citizens in the heavily damaged area 3 years after the Wenchuan earthquake. Effective and sustainable mental health services are needed and should be directed particularly to the elderly Qiang citizens who are among the groups most vulnerable to the direct impact of the earthquake.

Abstract Aim: To compare the status of bacteria in the conjunctival sac from the elder Qiang minority and Han people with dry eyes in Sichuan, China.
Methods: Total of 54 elder Qiang people with dry eyes (108 eyes) were examined by cluster sampling. In the similar habitation region of Han people, 80 (160 dry eyes) Han people were analyzed as the control group. The bacteria was separated from the inferior palpebral conjunctiva, then inoculated on blood plate for 48 hours and identified.
Results: Totally 24 strains of bacteria were cultured in either Qiang minority or Han c populations with 3 strains of them existed in both ethnic groups. The commonest bacteria in conjunctival sac in two ethnic groups were non-pathogenic bacterium. The composition of Corynebacterium in Han people (54.1%) was significantly higher than that in Qiang minority (27.4%) (χ(2)=11.6721, P=0.0006). The percentage of Sphingomonas Paucimobilis in Qiang people was higher than that in Han people (χ(2)=18.6442, P=0.0000). However, there was no significant difference between Qiang minority and Han people either in bacterial positive rate in conjunctival sac, or the composition of bacteria species and strains, or the composition of staphylococcus epidemids between two ethnic populations.
Conclusion: There was no significant difference of bacterial positive rate in conjunctival sac from the elder of Qiang minority and Han people with dry eye, but the species of bacteria were different.

Abstract Objective: To compare the bacteria profiles in conjunctival sac of Qiang aged 40 years and over between those with dry eyes and those with normal eyes.
Methods: This survey was undertaken with a standardized protocol in Beichuan county. Ophthalmological examinations were performed on 54 individuals with dry eyes (108 eyes) and 52 individuals with normal eyes (104 eyes). The secretion of the inferior palpebral conjunctival sac was embrocated and inoculated on blood plate for 48-72 hours. The bacteria was separated and identified.
Results: Positive cultural results were found in 57.4% (62/108) of dry eyes and 61.5% (64/104) of normal eyes. The difference was not statistically significant (P=0.540). No gender and occupational differences in positive cultural results were found (P>0.05). Both the dry eyes and normal eyes were dominated by Gram-positive bacteria, with corynebacterium, staphylococcus epidemids and sphingomonas paucimobilis as main bacteria. Samples taken from the dry eyes produced 73 strains bacteria, 52 (83.8%) with a single strain of bacteria and 10 (16.2%) with co-existed strains of bacteria. The samples taken from the normal eyes were more likely to have co-existed strains of bacteria (P=0.000). Of the 87 strains of bacteria, 64.0%, were single strain and 36.0% were coexisted strains. Fifteen species of bacteria were cultivated from the dry eyes, significantly less than the number of species (24) cultivated from the normal eyes (P=0.027).
Conclusion: There is no difference in bacterial positive rate in the conjunctival sac between dry eyes and normal eyes of Qiang aged 40 years and over. Gram-positive bacteria is the dominant bacteria. Normal eyes are more likely to have multiple coexisted bacteria compared with dry eyes.
