    Abstract The definition of faculty development has been refined and expanded over the past few decades, and various definitions have been used in higher education. Initially, faculty development was defined as activities that help teachers improve teaching skills, design better curricula, and improve the organizational environment for education. Since then, as the focus of faculty development has shifted from individual professors to institutional needs, faculty development is now defined as the personal and professional development of professors, clinicians, researchers, and managers to meet institutional goals, visions, and missions in social terms and moral responsibility to the community. Faculty development in medical education is universally needed to recognize and cope with widespread changes in education, including the traditional role of professors, advances in pedagogical theory, changes in learning styles, innovative curriculum models, and evaluation philosophy. However, critics have pointed out that most universities could not actively implement faculty development or accept professors’ various demands. In this paper, various reports related to faculty development are reviewed to summarize how faculty development has progressed and present future directions for accepting various opinions to improve educational excellence and the quality of health care.

    Abstract Smartwatches have the potential to support health care in everyday life by supporting self-monitoring of health conditions and personal activities. This paper aims to develop a model that predicts the prevalence of cardiovascular disease using health-related data that can be easily measured by smartwatch users. To this end, the data corresponding to the health-related data variables provided by the smartwatch are selected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. To classify the prevalence of cardiovascular disease with these selected variables, we apply logistic regression, artificial neural network, and support vector machine among machine learning classification techniques, and compare the appropriateness of the algorithm through classification performance indicators. The prediction model using support vector machine showed the highest accuracy. Next, we analyze which structures or parameters of the support vector machine contribute to increasing accuracy and derive the importance of input variables. Since it is very important to diagnose cardiovascular disease early correctly, we expect that this model will be very useful if there is a tool to predict whether cardiovascular disease develops or not.

    Abstract Drowning is a common cause of accidental death worldwide, and it continues to be a serious public health problem. However, diagnosing drowning is a challenging task in forensic investigation because it is difficult to prove actual drowning and other submerged deaths with the autopsy techniques that are currently in use. Here, we show biomarkers that may be helpful for the diagnosis of drowning. We divided the experimental animals into four groups (drowning, postmortem submersion, hypoxia, and control) to evaluate the expression patterns of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2). On gene expression analysis, only ERK2 was found to be significantly increased in the drowning groups compared to the other cases. In the immunoblot analysis, phosphorylated ERK2 (p-ERK2) was found to be upregulated in the drowning groups. Immunohistochemical staining also showed that p-ERK in alveolar cells revealed a granular pattern in the drowning groups. However, the expression pattern of ERK2 over time after drowning differed between the freshwater and seawater drowning groups. Taken together, these results indicate that ERK2 may be useful for distinguishing between drowning and postmortem submersion if the postmortem interval (PMI) of drowning is short. Conversely, if the PMI is long from the time that death occurs until the discovery of dead bodies, it is possibly more helpful for identifying between freshwater and seawater drowning.

    Abstract This paper aims to determine the relationship between residential electricity consumption and other factors by analyzing the correlation and multiple regression between residential electricity consumption and three variables which are known as the factors affecting residential electricity consumption. We used the electricity consumption, income, number of household members, and age of 25 autonomous districts in Seoul as data for analysis, assuming that the socio-demographic characteristics vary from district to district in Seoul. The results showed that the electricity consumption and the three variables each had a significant correlation. However, multiple regression analysis results showed that the income and the number of household members have an effect on electricity consumption, but the average age is not a factor influencing electricity consumption. The results of this study would be useful for understanding the characteristics of urban residential electricity consumption in situations where the needs for an increase in residential electricity rates are continuously coming out.

    Abstract Kidney function can be preserved through pharmacological interventions and nonpharmacological strategies, such as lifestyle and dietary adjustments. Among these, coffee has been linked to protective effects on kidney function. However, few studies have investigated the effect of coffee consumption on kidney function according to specific genes. We hypothesized that the impact of coffee consumption on kidney function might vary depending on GCKR polymorphism. GCKR rs1260326 polymorphism was examined using the Korean genome and epidemiology data from 656 chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases and 38,540 individuals without CKD (non-CKD). GCKR polymorphism has been previously associated with both coffee consumption and kidney function in Europeans. We replicated the associations between GCKR rs1260326 and coffee consumption and kidney function in Korean individuals. We also explored the effect of coffee consumption on kidney function by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Individuals with the rs1260326 (TC/CC) genotype did not experience significant changes in CKD risk based on their coffee consumption habits. In contrast, individuals with the TT genotype exhibited a significantly lower risk of CKD based on coffee consumption. Interestingly, in the non-CKD group, a beneficial effect on estimated glomerular filtration rate was observed in individuals with the T allele as coffee consumption increased. Our findings supported the hypothesis and revealed that the impact of coffee consumption habits on kidney function may vary based on the GCKR rs1260326 genotype of Korean individuals.

    Abstract We investigated the physiological and transcriptomic response of Escherichia coli at the early stationary phase to light-emitting diodes with different wavelengths. The growth and metabolic changes of E. coli O157:H7 were examined under the influence of 465, 520, and 625 nm illuminated light. Under 465 nm illumination, the growth of E. coli O157:H7 was significantly retarded compared to 520 nm and 625 nm illumination and non-illuminated control. Metabolic changes were examined under these illumination and non-illuminated conditions based on transcriptomic reads. Transcriptomic response under 520 nm and 625 nm remained almost similar to control except few up-and down-regulated genes. Carbohydrates metabolic transcriptomic reads were greatly down-regulated under 465 nm illumination compared to 520 nm and 625 nm illumination and non-illuminated control showing depletion of glucose as a sole energy source during the exponential phase. Fatty acid degradation such as fad regulon-related genes was up-regulated in cells under 465 nm illumination revealing the shifting of cells to use fatty acid as a new carbon energy source during the early stationary phase. Exposure of E. coli O157:H7 cells to 465 nm illuminated light down-regulated virulence factor genes such as hlyA, hlyB, hlyC, stx1A, stx2B, paa, and bdm. Under the stress of 465 nm illumination, expression of stress and flagellar motility-related genes were up-regulated causing consumption of energy and reduction in cell growth. Also, oxidative phosphorylated transcriptomic reads were up-regulated under 465 nm illumination probably due to the production of ROS that might involve in the reduction of cell growth during the early stationary phase. These results indicate that pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 respond differentially to a different wavelength of the light-emitting diodes used in this study.

    Abstract Abstract We investigated the physiological and transcriptomic response of Escherichia coli at the early stationary phase to light-emitting diodes with different wavelengths. The growth and metabolic changes of E. coli O157:H7 were examined under the influence of 465, 520, and 625 nm illuminated light.
