Abstract We investigate two possible techniques to authenticate the q-digest data structure, along with a worst-case study of the computational complexity both in time and space of the proposed solutions, and considerations on the feasibility of the presented approaches in real-world scenarios. We conclude the discussion by presenting some considerations on the information complexity of the queries in the two proposed approaches, and by presenting some interesting ideas that could be the subject of future studies on the topic.

Abstract Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the gold standard technique for gallbladder diseases in both emergency and elective surgery. The incidence of the disease related to an increasingly elderly population coupled with the efficacy and safety of LC treatment resulted in an increase in the frequency of interventions without an increase in surgical mortality. For these reasons, managers implement strategies by which to standardize the process of patients undergoing LC. Specifically, the goal is to ensure, in accordance with the guidelines of the Italian Ministry of Health, a reduction in post-operative length of stay (LOS). In this study, a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodological approach was implemented to identify and subsequently investigate, through statistical analysis, the effect that corrective actions have had on the post-operative hospitalization for LC interventions performed in a University Hospital. The analysis of the process, which involved a sample of 478 patients, with an approach guided by the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) cycle, made it possible to reduce the post-operative LOS from an average of 6.67 to 4.44 days. The most significant reduction was obtained for the 60-69 age group, for whom the probability of using LC is higher than for younger people. The LSS offers a methodological rigor that has allowed us, as already known, to make significant improvements to the process, standardizing the result by limiting the variability and obtaining a total reduction of post-operative LOS of 67%.

Abstract While vaccination is the optimal response to an epidemic, recent events have obliged us to explore new strategies for containing worldwide epidemics, like lockdown strategies, where the contacts among the population are strongly reduced in order to slow down the propagation of the infection. By analyzing a classical epidemic model, we explore the impact of lockdown strategies on the evolution of an epidemic. We show that repeated lockdowns have a beneficial effect, reducing the final size of the infection, and that they represent a possible support strategy to vaccination policies.

Abstract The theorem developed by John Bell constituted the starting point of a revolution that translated a philosophical question about the nature of reality into the broad and intense field of research of the quantum information technologies. We focus on a system of two qubits prepared in a random, mixed state, and we study the typical behavior of their nonlocality via the CHSH-Bell inequality. Afterward, motivated by the necessity of accounting for inefficiency in the state preparation, we address to what extent states close enough to one with a high degree of nonclassicality can violate local realism with a previously chosen experimental setup.

Abstract The urgency to develop vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the acceleration of clinical trials. Specifically, a broad spectrum of efficacy levels has been reported for various vaccines based on phase III cohort studies. Our study demonstrates that conducting large cohort phase III clinical trials during the peak of an epidemic leads to a significant underestimation of vaccine efficacy, even in the absence of confounding factors. Furthermore, we find that this underestimation increases with the proportion of infectious individuals in the population during the experiment and the severity of the epidemic, as measured by its basic reproduction number.

Abstract Networks have always played a special role for human beings in shaping social relations, forming public opinion, and driving economic equilibria. Nowadays, online networked platforms dominate digital markets and capitalization leader-boards, while social networks drive public discussion. Despite the importance of networks in many economic and social domains (economics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc.), the knowledge about the laws that dominate their dynamics is still scarce and fragmented. Here, we analyse a wide set of online networks (those financed by advertising) by investigating their value dynamics from several perspectives: the type of law they follow, their geographic scope, and the relationship between economic value and financial value. The results show that the networks are dominated by strongly nonlinear dynamics. The existence of non-linearity is often underestimated in social sciences because it involves contexts that are difficult to deal with, such as the presence of multiple equilibria-some of which are unstable. Yet, these dynamics must be fully understood and addressed if we aim to understand the recent evolution in the economic, political and social milieus, which are precisely characterised by corner equilibria (e.g., polarisation, winner-take-all solutions, increasing inequality) and nonlinear patterns.

Abstract Sesamoid bone disorders are disabling conditions with limited treatment options. This case report describes a 17-year-old football player with avascular necrosis (AVN) in both the tibial and fibular hallux sesamoids with a concomitant non-displaced stress fracture of the tibial hallux sesamoid. After a short period of conservative management, the patient underwent open sesamoid core decompression with an application of concentrated bone marrow aspirate and amnion matrix. After postoperative physical therapy, the patient achieved a painless range of motion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. He returned to full athletic activities by 6 months postoperatively. Core decompression with biologic augmentation is a viable treatment option for sesamoid AVN. Earlier surgical intervention for sesamoid AVN can also be considered, particularly in younger active patients.
