Abstract In December 2019, a new variant coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, emerged in China, which was initially described as a pneumonia of an unknown agent. The new coronavirus spreads mainly by person-to-person transmission through close contact. The pathophysiology of COVID-19 is related to a complex immune system response that varies between people and, in severe cases of the disease, is characterized by excessive responses called "cytokine storms," which are associated with complications that can lead to a state of hypercoagulation and death. Glucocorticoids and azithromycin are drugs that may be effective in the treatment. This review aims to highlight the clinical findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of glucocorticoid and azithromycin therapy in the treatment of COVID-19. To date, many drugs have been studied for use in combination therapy, and the rapid expansion of knowledge about the virology of SARS-CoV-2 generates a more accurate direction in therapy.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate, in the second cycle, the growth and production of ‘Orelha-de-elefante Mexicana’ prickly pear (Opuntia sp.) under complementary irrigation with treated domestic sewage. The experiment was carried out in the Milagre Settlement, municipality of Apodi-RN, Brazil, from June 2016 to February 2017. Five treatments were evaluated, corresponding to four irrigation frequencies (2.3, 7.0, 14.0 and 21.0 days) to apply an effluent depth of 3.5 mm, and the control, rainfed cultivation (without irrigation). The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replicates. After preliminary-primary treatment, the domestic sewage showed acceptable chemical and physical characteristics for fertigation under the conditions adopted in the prickly pear cultivation. 234 days after the 1st cut in the plants, the following morphometric characteristics were measured: plant height and length, width, perimeter, thickness and number of primary and secondary cladodes, and biomass accumulation. Complementary irrigation with treated domestic sewage effluent applied at intervals of 2.3, 7.0, 14.0 and 21.0 days allowed satisfactory growth and production of ‘Orelha-de-elefante Mexicana’ prickly pear; without irrigation, its development was substantially hampered during the dry period. Complementary irrigation with 3.5 mm of domestic sewage effluent applied at intervals of 2.3, 7.0 and 14.0 days led to highest growth and biomass accumulation in ‘Orelha-de-elefante Mexicana’ prickly pear.

Abstract This paper presents a review of the literature on pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid in skeletally immature individuals, taking into consideration its epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment, as well as its controversies. Knowledge of this subject makes it possible for patients to be given appropriate treatment immediately. Pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid in skeletally immature patients is a rare condition that results from error or lack of diagnosis of a fracture. Thus, careful clinical and radiographic examination should be performed in order to confirm or rule out this diagnosis. Several treatment methods have been reported and have shown good results. These include conservative plaster cast treatment, bone graft without osteosynthesis, bone graft with Kirschner wires, percutaneous screws and bone graft with compression screws. The treatment performed depends on the characteristics of the pseudarthrosis and the surgeon's experience.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the water quality of the Apodi lagoon, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, at points along its surface. The monitoring of the water quality is emphasized as it is under influence of the urban basin of Apodi and due to incorporation of material by the influx of continental waters that lead to eutrophization of the lagoon water in periods of extreme temperatures and precipitation. Systematic samples were collected from the lagoon water surface throughout its length. The electrical conductivity of the Apodi water varies along the surface, mainly in the west and southeast extremities. The water salinity increased with the beginning of the dry period and decreased after the rains. There is a great spatial variability in the physical and chemical characteristics, mainly for pH, CE, RAS and Na and Cl contents. In the lagoon, the most frequent ions were sodium and ...

Abstract Objective: To evaluate potential in vitro relaxant actions of sildenafil on human isolated bladder neck smooth muscle.
Methods: Bladder neck strips were sampled from patients (aged 55-77 years) submitted to prostatic surgery (6 adenomectomies and 1 radical prostatectomy). These were carefully dissected into 1-2 x 0.5-cm pieces and suspended in an organ bath containing 30 mL of a modified Krebs Henseleit solution, bubbled with 95% O(2)/5% CO(2). After tissue stabilization and viability test with KCl, the tissue was precontracted with phenylephrine, and a concentration-response relaxant curve to sildenafil was constructed. The effect of sildenafil was also assessed in tissues treated with N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) or 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxaline-1-one (ODQ) (inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase and guanylyl cyclase, respectively).
Result: Sildenafil induced significant bladder neck relaxation at all concentrations tested. The maximum relaxation was 86.97% +/- 6.69%, obtained with a high concentration of sildenafil (5.1 x 10(-4) M). Both L-NAME and ODQ significantly reduced sildenafil-induced relaxation.
Conclusions: Sildenafil was effective in inducing bladder neck smooth muscle relaxation in vitro. This effect was almost abolished by L-NAME and ODQ, clearly demonstrating a dependence of the nitric oxide-cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway. Our in-vitro results suggest that sildenafil might be useful in improving lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the performance of digester decant system with biological filter followed by constructed wetland and solar reactor in the treatment of domestic sewage from Milagres rural community in Apodi-RN. The treatment system was monitored for the period of October and November 2010, 48 days after planting Pennisetum purpureum Schumach. Samples of domestic sewage were collected at different stages of treatment, in four replications on time, to determine physicochemical and microbiological characteristics about the system performance. The results indicated significant removal of turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total solids, suspended solids, phosphorus and oil and grease using the set digester decant with biological filter, followed by constructed wetland and solar reactor; the association of average solar radiation of 28.73 MJ m-2 d-1, effluent depth of 0.10 m on reactor and time of sun exposure of 12 hours provided removal of fecal coliform up to 99.99% of domestic sewage in Apodi, RN, the treated effluent met microbiological standard of the Brazilian guidelines for agricultural use with restrictions.
