Abstract Hemoglobin S/OArab (Hgb S/OArab) disease is a rare hemoglobinopathy which presents similarly to sickle cell retinopathy, with only three prior reports that describe associated retinal findings. In this report, we present ophthalmic examination findings in 2 patients with Hgb S/OArab. One patient exhibited peripheral ischemia and sunburst lesions without neovascular disease, and the other patient developed proliferative retinopathy of both eyes and multiple posterior-pole branch retinal artery occlusions in one eye. To our knowledge, this is the first case of retinal arterial occlusive disease in Hgb S/OArab, and the first report of fundus autofluorescence and OCT angiography in Hgb/OArab retinopathy.

Abstract Peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs) are important components of the innate immune system which provide the first line of defense against invading microbes. There are four members in the family of PGRPs in animals of which PGRP-S is a common domain. It is responsible for the binding to microbial cell wall molecules. In order to understand the mode of binding of PGRP-S to the components of the bacterial cell wall, the structure of the complex of camel PGRP-S (CPGRP-S) with heptanoic acid has been determined at 2.15 Å resolution. The structure determination showed the presence of four crystallographically independent protein molecules which are designated as A, B, C, and D. These four protein molecules associate in the form of two homodimers which are represented as A-B and C-D dimers. The association between molecules A and B gives rise to a shallow cleft on the surface at one end of the dimeric interface. One molecule of heptanoic acid is observed at this binding site in the A-B dimer. The association of C and D molecules results in the formation of a long zig-zag tunnel along with the C-D interface. In the cleft at the C-D interface, three molecules of hydrogen peroxide along with other non-water solvent molecules have been observed. The analysis of the several complexes of CPGRP-S with fatty acids and non-fatty acids such as peptidoglycan, lipopolysaccharide, and lipoteichoic acid shows that the fatty acids bind at the A-B site while non-fatty acids interact through C-D interface.

Abstract Given the conservative nature of Arab societies, Vladimir Nabokov’s English novel Lolita (1955) poses considerable challenges to Arab translators because of its pornographic nature and controversial themes: pedophilia, incest, and young teenage sex. This study mainly examines the translation of Lolita by Mola with occasional references to Jubaili’s translation of the novel. It also investigates the translation strategies employed by the two translators. The findings showed that Jubaili followed the literal approach of translation with no significant deviation from the novel’s themes and characterization. On the other hand, Mola dysphemized the expressions and eroticized the events, which were more euphemistic in the original. Mola’s utilization of some translation strategies such as omission, addition, and substitution affected the representation of the main characters, namely, Humbert (stepfather) and Lolita (stepdaughter), by shifting their roles as victim and victimizer, making Humbert’s actions less culpable, and removing any traces of Lolita’s innocence. In so doing, Mola reinforces sexual norms for young American women and diminishes the pedophile/incest angle. This study is significant, particularly within the context of translators’ training and for those interested in literary translation.

Exploring the Multifaceted Functions of Mandi Ka Luak in Minangkabau Society

    2023  Volume 2

Abstract: ... symbolic meanings within elements such as the seven-colored thread bracelet, baby’s hair-cutting ceremony ...

Abstract Traditions play a significant role in preserving the identity and values of a society. One such tradition that has been passed down through generations is the Mandi Ka Luak tradition in Nagari Sungai Antuan. This research aims to trace the symbolic meanings embedded in the Mandi Ka Luak tradition and understand the functions associated with it. A qualitative research method was employed with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, religious figures, and community leaders, as well as document analysis. The findings reveal that the Mandi Ka Luak tradition holds symbolic meanings within elements such as the seven-colored thread bracelet, baby’s hair-cutting ceremony, symbolic feeding, the use of coconut shells, and communal feasting. Furthermore, the tradition continues to be practiced because it plays a crucial role in fulfilling various basic needs of the community. It meets the needs for security and growth by eliminating taboos and superstitions, providing recreation, and strengthening social bonds through family and community ties. Additionally, Mandi Ka Luak contributes to the preservation of cultural identity as part of the ancestral heritage carefully upheld by the community. This research provides a deeper understanding of the continuity of the Mandi Ka Luak tradition within the context of Nagari Sungai Antuan and raises questions about the role of culture in an ever-changing modern society.
