Abstract A study of the conditions for precipitation of molybdenum(V) hydroxide shows that for Mo concentration 1 mg ml about 97.5% of the Mo can be precipitated between pH 5 and 5.8. Lower concentrations of molybdenum(V) or molybdenum(VI) can be precipitated quantitatively by using 20 times the amount of zirconium as collector, at the same pH. On this basis, a simple method is given for quantitative separation of rhenium from large amounts of molybdenum and is attested by analysis of synthetic and molybdenite samples.

Abstract Factor V deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive coagulation disorder. We report a case with inherited factor V deficiency presenting as life-threatening recurrent hemoperitoneum, following bleeding from ruptured corpus haemorrhagicum. Prolonged prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times, normal thrombin time and a normal platelet count pointed towards a disorder of coagulation. Mixing studies with factor V deficient plasma and coagulation factor assay revealed markedly reduced plasma factor V clotting activity. The management included blood, plasma and tranexamic acid. Family screening revealed low factor V levels in her parents. Although her brother had significant Factor V deficiency and epistaxis, he did not need hospitalization or replacement, indicating the varied manifestation of this bleeding defect in this family.

Abstract Molybdenum(V) is quantitatively precipitated as sulphide (99.7%) from 0.1 M At hydrochloric acid without formation of molybdenum blue and without need for a long digestion. Precipitation is more complete and co-precipitation less than with Mo(VI) sulphide. The precipitate can also be used directly for gravimetric estimation. In the presence of EDTA, molybdenum(V) sulphide is not precipitated from 0.1 M hydrochloric acid and can be separated from copper, bismuth, antimony and tin sulphides and determined cerimetrically in presence of the EDTA.

Abstract We performed a prospective randomised controlled trial of a new mechanical method of prophylaxis for venous thrombo-embolism in 60 patients undergoing knee replacement surgery. The method uses the A-V Impulse System to produce cyclical compression of the venous reservoir of the foot. The overall incidence of deep-vein thrombosis was 68.7% in patients receiving no prophylaxis and 50% in those using the device. The difference was not significant. There was, however, a reduction of the extent of thrombosis in the treated group. There were 13 major calf-vein thrombi and six proximal-vein thrombi in the control group compared with only five major calf-vein thrombi in the treated group. This difference was significant (p = 0.014). No patient developed clinical features of a pulmonary embolism.

Abstract Background: Malaria is one of the most important parasitic disease of human. In India 60-65% of infections are due to P.vivax and 35-40% are due to P.falciparum Malaria is an acute, recurrent and sometimes chronic vector borne protozoan disease which has worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical regions The role of Primaquine is well established in the prevention of relapse of P.vivax malaria. Primaquine has a narrow therapeutic range and short half-life that requires daily administration upto 2 weeks, resulting in poor compliance Methods: Randomized control trial, which involved 100 patients of P.vivax Malaria Patient in medical ward of mahatma Gandhi hospital attached to S N medical college 'Jodhpur. All patient in this study received chloroquine for 3 days (10mg of base per kg followed by 5mg /kg 6-8 hours later and 5 mg/kg on each of the two days, total 25mg/kg over 3days and divided in three groups viz.Group 1 taken Primaquine 15 mg tab for 14 days (n=34), Group 2 taken Primaquine 15 mg SR tab for 14 days (n=33),Group 3 taken Primaquine 30 mg SR tab for 7 days and placebo for next 7 days. Results: In this study, Efficacy and compliance of Primaquine 30 mg SR for 7 days was found greater than the conventional Primaquine tab. and Primaquine 15 mg SR tab for 14 day. Adverse effect of primaquine 30 mg SR tab for 7 days was found lesser than conventional Primaquine tab 15 mg as well as Primaquine 15 mg SR tab. Conclusions: As Malaria is very prevalent in India which causes significant mortality and morbidity in Indian population. Use of Primaquine 30 mg SR tab has good compliance, efficacy as well as lesser adverse effect. [Int J Basic Clin Pharmacol 2016; 5(6.000): 2664-2668]

Abstract The factor V Leiden variant, responsible for the phenomenon of activated protein C resistance, was found to be less frequent among British (0.06) and Swedish/Danish (0.15) protein C deficiency patients than previously reported in a Dutch study (0.19). In the Swedish population, a significantly increased frequency of the factor V Leiden allele was apparent in protein C deficiency patients as compared to healthy controls. However, this was not found in the British population. Coinheritance of the factor V Leiden variant is therefore unlikely to be the sole determinant of whether a person with protein C deficiency will come to clinical attention. Nevertheless, when patient data were analysed by type of protein C deficiency, it was noted that the frequency of the factor V Leiden variant was 2.8-fold higher in type II patients compared to type I patients. A possible explanation of this disparity is discussed.

Abstract The ability of anionic phospholipids (especially phosphatidylserine, PS) on the outer membrane leaflet of four tumour cell lines to support different stages of the extrinsic pathway of coagulation was probed using annexin V as an inhibitor. The procoagulant activity of two tumorigenic (MKN-28, human gastric carcinoma, Hep3B, human hepatoblastoma) and two non-tumorigenic (HepG2, human hepatocellular, HOC-1, human ovarian carcinoma) cell lines were observed to be inhibited by annexin V, although significant differences (observed as IC50 with respect to annexin V) were noted for each stage of coagulation and between different cell types. This was considered to suggest a restricted accessibility of PS in the vicinity of coagulation factors on the surface of the cell. PS levels, as estimated by binding of 125I-annexin V, were high on two of the cell lines tested, equivalent to 24 x 10(6) sites per cell for HepG2 (Kd 128 nM) and 6.5 x 10(6) sites per cell for MKN-28 (Kd 50 nM). During 9 days' culturing of HepG2 and MKN-28, the number of sites per cell remained constant. However, perhaps supporting a proposal of reduced availability, there was an observed fall in PS-dependent procoagulant activity of HepG2 and MKN-28 cells, subsequent to a peak on reaching confluency at 3 days. Both prothrombinase activity and total procoagulant activity fell, even though the number of 125I-annexin V binding sites remained constant.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract In a recent double-blind trial lasting over 6 months, 40 patients suffering from intermittent claudication were randomly allocated to receive 300 mg of suloctidil per day or exactly matching placebo capsules. In addition to treadmill walking distance, other objective criteria including ankle blood pressure response and muscle blood flow measured by 133Xe clearance were used to assess the effectiveness of therapy. Nine patients (4 in the suloctidil group and 5 controls) did not complete the trial according to the protocol. Of the remaining 31 patients, 17 were in the control group and 14 received suloctidil. A significant improvement in the absolute walking distance, the level of beta-thromboglobulin (beta TG) compared to pre-therapy value and the time for the ankle pressure index to return to the pre-exercise value was observed in patients receiving suloctidil.
