Abstract The second edition of this highly successful book includes up-to-date notes on the step-wise management of clinical emergencies encountered in everyday intensive care units (ICU). Each thoroughly revised chapter provides concise information for point-of-care treatment, making it a practical guide clinicians can refer to on a daily basis at work or while traveling, or just to expand their knowledge. Volume 2 of ICU Protocols covers topics in the endocrine and metobolic systems, oncology, trauma, toxicology, envenomation and thermodysregulation, obstetrics, perioperative care, pediatrics and ICU procedures. Pulmonology, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, nephrology and infectious diseases are covered in the first volume of ICU Protocols. This two-volume book is a must-read for intensivists, critical care specialists, junior trainees and residents working in ICUs. It is also relevant as course material for workshops on critical care, and essential for all hospital-based libraries. “This book provides junior trainees with an introduction to the management of problems common to the critical care unit.” David J Dries, Doody’s Book Reviews, March, 2013, for the first edition of ICU Protocols. .

Abstract Introduction: Retained products of conception (RPOC) generally result after first half of pregnancy termination and also may occur after vaginal or cesarean delivery. It frequently presents with irregular or continuous vaginal bleeding, lower abdominal and pelvic pain, and discharge per vaginum due to infection; it can also cause late complications like formation of intrauterine adhesions and subfertility. The diagnosis of the RPOC along with the symptoms is generally supported by ultrasonography with or without colour Doppler. The patient also undergoes uterine vasculature assessment to diagnose arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The management of RPOC has been conventionally done with blind dilation and suction curettage (D and C); however, expectant management, uterine artery embolization, and hysteroscopic resection of RPOC are safe and efficient alternatives.
Materials and methods: In this review, we analyse the current available evidence regarding the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of RPOC comparing the sensitivity, specificity, outcomes, pros and cons of various methods.
Conclusion: RPOC is a common complication associated with early and late complications. The judicious use of antibiotics along with interventional radiology and hysteroscopy forms the backbone for the treatment of this condition.

Abstract Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is a multisystemic rare genetic disorder characterised by abnormalities of the immune system. We report the ocular features of APECED in two siblings of an Indian family, out of four who are still living. The ocular features of this disorder primarily included madarosis, refractive error, heterochromia, corneal opacity and peripheral retinal pigment epithelium degeneration. There is marked phenotypical heterogeneity in this disorder. We found differences even between monozygotic twins. While one of the twins did not have any ocular issues, the other one did. The child with corneal involvement was the most symptomatic; however, it did not lead to visual impairment. On genetic workup, homozygous p.M1V mutation was found in exon 1 of AIRE gene that has not been studied in Indian subjects with APECED. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report in literature describing ocular features of APECED in an Indian family with distinctive genetic involvement.

Abstract: A field study to understand dissipation rates and effect of various washing treatments on the residues of seven different insecticides, i.e. tetraniliprole 200 SC, emamectin benzoate 5 SG, lufenuron 5.4 EC, indoxacarb 14.5 SC, thiodicarb 75 WP, ... ...

Abstract A field study to understand dissipation rates and effect of various washing treatments on the residues of seven different insecticides, i.e. tetraniliprole 200 SC, emamectin benzoate 5 SG, lufenuron 5.4 EC, indoxacarb 14.5 SC, thiodicarb 75 WP, profenofos 50 EC and cypermethrin 25 EC in/on cauliflower curd has been conducted. The results showed that initial deposits (just after the last insecticide application, i.e. 0 d) of tetraniliprole, emamectin benzoate, lufenuron, indoxacarb, thiodicarb, profenofos and cypermethrin were 0.43, 0.03, 0.25, 0.28, 0.38, 6.70 and 0.68 mg kg

Abstract Background: Postoperative pain prolongs hospital stay after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and remains a major challenge during the postoperative period. Effective pain control encourages early ambulation, which significantly reduces postoperative complications. In recent years, multimodal analgesia has been recommended with fewer adverse effects and more effective analgesia. The primary objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of analgesia between Transversus Abdominis Plane Block (TAP) Block and intraperitoneal instillation of bupivacaine by comparing the meantime of the first dose of rescue analgesia in either group and the total supplementary analgesia required. Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted on 150 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy Group 1 comprised of patients who had received Intraperitoneal Bupivacaine for analgesia and Group 2 received TAP Block for pain relief. Results: Time of the first dose of analgesia after surgery was observed earlier in Group 1 as compared to Group 2 (Time – hours: 9.2 ± 2 vs. 12.3 ± 1.6; p = 0.0001. The Total dose of analgesic was higher in the Intra Peritoneal Bupivacaine Group as compared to the TAP group. Conclusion: AP block provided for a better quality of analgesia as assessed by the reduced requirement of intravenous supplementary analgesia which was less in patients who were given TAP Block as compared to local instillation of Bupivacaine.
