Abstract The postharvest preservation of Ngoc Linh ginseng (NL ginseng) is essential to retain its quality and sensory values for prolonged storage. In this study, the efficacy of NL ginseng preservation by coating chitosan derivatives in combination with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solutions was investigated under refrigeration conditions (~3 °C; ~40% RH) for 56 days. The effect of the chitosan-based solutions, including N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC), chitosan oligomer saccharide (COS), or chitosan (CS), and the blend solutions (NOCC-PVA or COS-PVA) on the coated NL ginsengs was observed during storage. The pH values, viscosity, and film-forming capability of the coating solutions were determined, while the visual appearance, morphology, and mechanical properties of the films formed on glass substrates as a ginseng model for coating were also observed. The appearance, skin lightness, weight loss, sensory evaluation, total saponin content (TSC), total polyphenol content (TPC), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the coated NL ginsengs were evaluated. The findings showed that the observed values of the coated NL ginsengs were better than those of the non-coated samples, with the exception of the COS-coated samples, which had completely negative results. Furthermore, the NOCC-PVA solution exhibited a better preservation effect compared with the COS-PVA one based on the observed indices, except for TPC and TAC, which were not impacted by the coating. Notably, the optimal preservation time was determined to be 35 days. This study presents promising preservation technology using the coating solution of NOCC-PVA, harnessing the synergistic effect of pH 7.4 and the form-firming capacity, to maintain the shelf life, medicinal content, and sensory attributes of NL ginseng.

Abstract Da Bac water reservoirs in Hong Linh town which was completed and accumulated water in 2006 has served in production since then. After accumulation of water in the left-bank downstream next to the door of sewage water and in the right-bank downstream, the main stream area was excessively cultivated. The cause of the cultivation is that the waterproof fabric in two shoulders of dams have not reached waterproofing at roof. If there is still permeation after this method, it will be necessary to handle additional waterproofing cement pile wall in stream beds.

Abstract Lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) are liquids that have crystalline structures. LLCs as drug delivery systems that can deliver hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and amphiphilic agents. Due to their unique phases and structures, LLCs can protect both small molecules and biologics from the gastrointestinal tract’s harsh environment, thus making LLCs attractive as carriers for oral drug delivery. In this review, we discuss the advantages of LLCs and LLCs as oral formulations targeting intestinal lymphatic transport. In oral LLC formulations, the relationship between the micelle compositions and the resulting LLC structures as well as intestinal transport and absorption were determined. In addition, we further demonstrated approaches for the enhancement of intestinal lymphatic transport: (1) lipid-based LLCs promoting chylomicron secretion and (2) the design of LLC nanoparticles with M cell-triggered ligands for targeting the M cell pathway. In this review, we introduce LLC drug delivery systems and their characteristics. Our review focuses on recent approaches using oral LLC drug delivery strategies targeting the intestinal lymphatic system to enhance drug bioavailability.

Abstract Cuprous oxide/copper/cupric oxide nanoparticles were synthesized through a hybrid process involving anodic dissolution and a controlled redox reaction between NaOH and glucose in the solution. The study demonstrates the structural manipulation of the material by varying the reaction components within the solution. Morphology, structural analyses using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), EDX (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) unveiled the tunability of the material's structure based on the reaction components. Nitrogen adsorption analysis employing the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation confirmed the material's porosity, while Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements provided insights into the materials' hydrodynamic size and zeta potential. The results demonstrated that by increasing the glucose/NaOH ratio during the reaction, the different structures and morphologies of the distinct products were obtained from the clustering of small nanoparticles to cubic shape and flower-like structure. Antibacterial activity tests conducted on various bacterial strains showed a correlation between the morphology and structure of the material and its antibacterial properties. The highest substantial antibacterial efficacy against all tested bacterial strains at a dosage of 100 μg/L was obtained for the samples with clustering morphology, whereas the remaining materials showed no discernible antibacterial effect against one of the studied bacteria. The results also demonstrated that the sample with a clustering structure exhibited superior antibacterial properties when dispersed in water containing dimethylsulfoxide.

Abstract Using circular bio-based building materials is considered a promising solution to reduce the environmental impacts of the construction industry. To identify the pros and cons of these materials, it is essential to investigate their sustainability performance. However, the previous sustainability assessment studies are heterogeneous regarding the assessment methods and objectives, highlighting the need for a review to identify and analyse these aspects. Moreover, there is still a lack of studies reviewing the methodological issues and implications of the assessment methods, as well as the current end-of-life scenarios and circularity options for these materials. To address these gaps, this study conducts a systematic and critical review of a sample of 97 articles. The results indicate that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the most frequently applied method, yet most studies are cradle-to-gate analyses of materials. Otherwise, very few studies consider the end-of-life phase, and most of the end-of-life scenarios analysed are unsustainable and have low circularity levels. The analysis also highlights the methodological issues of the assessment methods used, with a particular focus on LCA, such as a lack of consensus on system boundaries, functional units, and databases for facilitating sustainability assessments associated with the use of circular bio-based building materials. Two primary recommendations emerge from the analysis. Firstly, for LCA studies, it is recommended to increase transparency and harmonisation in assessments to improve the comparability of results. Besides, to overcome data availability issues, it is recommended to use data from multiple sources and conduct sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. Secondly, more sustainability assessments (including the three pillars) considering the whole life cycle with more sustainable end-of-life scenarios and circularity options for these materials should be conducted.

Abstract Chylothorax is a rare condition after blunt trauma. We present a 32-year-olds man with a thoracic duct injury resulting in the right chylothorax after a motor vehicle collision. After the failure of conservative management, the patient underwent lymphangiography and successfully embolized the thoracic duct. This report emphasizes the importance of identifying thoracic duct injury in setting blunt trauma and management of this injury.
