Abstract Hospitals in Britain during the Victorian period became increasingly involved with the education of health care professionals. Yet, despite the growing role of hospitals, there were wide variations in the quality of medical services available. This allowed for significant consequential choices and advancement to be made, though it was mainly in the medical sector. Campaigning through the Doctor’s Registration Movement also left its mark in a social climate considered turbulent. Remarkably, nursing as a profession received almost invisible treatment as is seen from the feeble echo in the vast expanse of literature from that time. Acknowledging nursing’s historical point of entry into the discourse, and its journey from the Medieval Period right through the Victorian era is paramount. However, this cannot be properly done without giving due emphasis to the community nurse. Examining the historical terrain and the historical influences that led to the demise of community nursing, through Dickens’s fictional portrayal of Sarah Gamp, this paper will provide answers on the present status of this aspect of the nursing profession. It will offer a close reading of Dickens’s Sarah Gamp from Martin Chuzzlewit, and it will try to explore and elicit factual information from a rich and impressively extensive fictional plot. This paper also offers an analytical exposition of Gamp’s peculiar potential for the reading of the nurse figure as unconstrained by Victorian codes of gender and economics.

Abstract Storied accounts of nurses’ representations on the battlefield become vital records of personal or communal histories that otherwise may not be voiced or even acknowledged. What we have today is a fairly accurate account of the harsh realities nurses endured at the battlefield and how these horrific situations shaped them as nurses who would act as role models in the brink of death. While women’s writing about war has received much critical attention that has established its authenticity as witness to war, scant attention has been paid to how women see the trauma of nursing at the frontline and how it influences the narrative. The scope of this article is to understand the connections between nurses’ narratives from the First World War and Vietnam. It tries to elicit common elements in how war is seen and consequently to the relationship between seeing and bearing witness to wars.

Abstract Critical acclaim and popular opinion have elevated Kesey’s first novel, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest published in 1962, to something of a modern classic, much read and written about as well as adapted for film. Cuckoo’s Nest offers an interesting alternative scenario to the usual depictions of the nurse as Angel of Mercy, the unskilled handmaiden or the ministering angel found in literature. In giving Nurse Ratched tyrannical authority, demonising the institution and its representative, Kesey elicits the themes of control, submission and alienation through the structure of nursing and care involved. These same themes also link to gender, representing similar fears of female empowerment and male power rendered impotent by a sterile social structure. This paper aims to analyse the sardonic representation of the power and authority in Nurse Ratched and how gender and the spectacle of masculinity is defined through discourse. This is imperative as literature and the media have a strong influence on public views, shaping the way the public values and treats professions in health care. Nursing is plagued by feminine stereotypes that continue to undermine the profession up till the present day. This reading of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest provides educational opportunities to engage in critical dialogue around this and other texts which speak to nursing and human concerns. This will equip nurses with the right tools for discernment so that they can challenge rather than accept how nurses are represented in the literature.

Abstract Frontline clinicians have become society’s line of defence against a raging pandemic. Their stories reflect the uncertainty faced on a daily basis and are witness to their courageous acts first-hand. While research to understand the virus and curtail the disease is readily available, there is sparse information on the emotional hardship medical practitioners have to face. The aim of this commentary is to provide a better understanding of the experiences of doctors practicing medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the focus on Malta and on Maltese doctors currently working abroad. Messages were solicited from those who wished to share their experiences, and were posted, after the author’s permission, on a COVID-19 website. On content analysis of these messages, four major themes emerged: initial reaction, hospital’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the new normal, and personal adjustments. These themes provide rich data on how medical practitioners coped during adversity. It portrays their resilience as they came to terms with a rapidly changing health care system and exemplifies the adjustments they made to fall into a new normal. Indeed, their monumental efforts need to be lauded and their outstanding contributions recognised.
