    Abstract The current knowledge of modifiable risk factors for dementia comes mainly from high-income countries. In Latin America and Caribbean countries, where the burden of gender and socioeconomic inequalities is greater than in high-income countries, the prevalence of dementia is also higher and disease onset is earlier, especially among women, even after adjustments for life expectancy. In this Personal View, we discuss socioeconomic modifiable risk factors for dementia established by previous studies and postulate further harmful and often hidden factors faced by women that might influence the gender-specific timing of onset and general prevalence of dementia. We emphasise some of the effects of gender roles, their direct and indirect effects on dementia, and how they disproportionately impact women. Finally, we highlight the importance of bringing hidden risk factors to open discussion to promote research with high-quality data and to encourage public policies to promote and preserve women's health.

    Abstract Objective: To verify the reliability of vocal self-assessment tools in individuals with vocal complaints using a digital platform and in-person.
    Methods: Data from 50 Brazilian adults with vocal complaints were collected. The participants answered the Voice Symptoms Scale (VoiSS), the Voice Handicap Index - 10 (VHI-10), and questions regarding personal information and their general health. The data collection occurred in two moments, within a period of 2-14 days, with time variation between participants, and always in the same collection order: 1. using a digital platform (Google Forms); 2. In-person. The data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the SPSS 25.0 software and the Wilcoxon Test.
    Results: The self-perception of vocal symptoms in the Emotional factors for women presented a statistical difference between the digital platform and the in-person response (P = 0.029); higher scores were observed when answers were given in-person compared to using a digital platform.
    Conclusion: Overall, the participants perceived their voice symptoms and voice handicap similarly when answers were given using a digital platform and in-person. The Emotion voice symptoms in women were the only exception, although remaining deviated; however, the perception of the symptoms may have been attenuated during the in-person care.

    Abstract Musical training (MT) is perceived as a multi-sensory program that simultaneously integrates visual, aural, oral, and kinesthetic senses. Furthermore, MT stimulates cognitive functions in a ludic way instead of tapping straight into the traditional context of school learning, including mathematics. Nevertheless, the efficacy of MT over mathematics remains understudied, especially concerning longstanding effects. For this reason, this longitudinal study explored the impact of MT on numerical cognition and abstract visual reasoning using a double-blind and quasi-experimental design. We assessed two groups of children from primary schools, namely one with developmental dyscalculia [DD;

    Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has caused high mortality rates among older people, and in order to avoid a healthcare system crisis, almost all countries worldwide have adopted social isolation measures to prevent the spread of the disease. However, in Brazil, a country demarcated by economic inequalities, in which approximately 25% of the population live below the poverty line, these measures will cost severe economic losses and accentuated starvation. For this reason, the underprivileged population should be immediately prioritized and well informed through good practice to avoid the virus. Since, government discrepancies in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak leaves the population without congruent guidelines on how to react or what to believe, allowing the spread of fake news and political crises. Here, we discuss who will pay the price of the Brazilian government denying the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and suggest some measures to ensure that clear information and protection reach this population.

    Abstract Resumo A pandemia da COVID-19 tem causado altas taxas de mortalidade entre os idosos e para evitar uma crise no sistema de saúde, quase todos os países do mundo adotaram medidas de isolamento social para evitar a disseminação da doença. Entretanto, no Brasil, um país demarcado pelas desigualdades econômicas, no qual aproximadamente 25% da população vive abaixo da linha de pobreza, essas medidas custarão severas perdas econômicas e acentuarão a fome. Por essa razão, a população desprivilegiada deve ser imediatamente priorizada e bem informada através de boas práticas para evitar o vírus. Visto que as discrepâncias governamentais no tratamento da epidemia da COVID-19 deixam a população sem diretrizes congruentes sobre como reagir ou no que acreditar, permitindo a disseminação de notícias falsas e crises políticas. Aqui, discutimos quem vai “pagar a conta” do governo brasileiro negando o impacto da pandemia da COVID-19 e sugerimos algumas medidas para garantir que proteção e informações claras cheguem a essa população.

    Abstract Nutritional status has evolved in a dual trend worldwide: underweight has become a minor or local issue while overweight or obesity has risen to play a major role in the global burden of disease. In 2014, Brazil was ranked as the third country with the highest absolute number of obese men. Our aim was to estimate trends of underweight and obesity among Brazilian adults using a comprehensive set of surveys from 1974 to 2019. The data used in the study originate from subjects aged ≥ 18 in six Brazilian national surveys, presented in chronological order: Brazilian National Survey on Household Expenses (ENDEF 1974-1975); Brazilian National Survey on Health and Nutrition (PNSN 1989); Brazilian Household Budget Survey (POF 2002-2003, 2008-2009); and Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS 2013 and 2019). All six surveys were designed to sample household complexes that were representative of the Brazilian population. Body mass index was calculated (kg/m2). The nutritional status of individuals was classified following the standards. We have modeled obesity trend according to income and education strata. The trajectories of underweight and obesity over time in Brazil draw the classical "X" of nutrition transition. From 1975 to 2019 underweight has decreased from 9.1% to 2.5% among men and 12.2% to 3.4% among women. On the other hand, obesity trajectories have scaled up from 3% to 22% among men and from 9% to 30% among women. The increase in obesity rate is directly and negatively proportional to income quintiles. Sociodemographic (income and education) improvement is associated with an increase in obesity. All public policies intending to stop the obesity spread in Brazil have been ineffective or too small to be effective.

    Abstract Onshore oil well drill cuttings and sunflower cake from biodiesel production require an appropriate destination to reduce the risks of environmental contamination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of the combination of different doses of these wastes on the growth of sunflower plants (Helianthus annus L.) and on soil chemical attributes after cultivation, making it possible to recommend safe application doses. Sunflower plants, cultivar Neon, were cultivated in a greenhouse for 80 days in Planossolo Háplico (Ultisol) as the main substrate. The design used was completely randomized, in a 6 × 6 factorial arrangement, composed of five doses of sunflower cake (2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 Mg ha⁻¹) and five doses of drill cuttings (5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 Mg ha⁻¹) and an experimental control using only Ultisol After cultivation, soil chemical attributes and the parameters height (H), stem diameter (D), and dry mass (DMAP) and nutrient contents in the aerial part of the plants were analyzed. Sunflower cake dose of 32 Mg ha⁻¹ limited the germination of sunflower plants. In sunflower plants, the highest contents of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were verified when the sunflower cake doses were associated with drill cuttings doses >45 Mg ha⁻¹. The mixture between sunflower cake and drill cuttings in the proportion of 16:45 Mg ha⁻¹, respectively, promoted higher H, D and DMAP of sunflower plants, as well as a considerable improvement in soil fertility, without causing significant increments in sodium content in the soil after cultivation. Highlights Inadequate disposal of agro-industrial wastes represents loss of raw material and energy. Drill cuttings and sunflower cake wastes enable improvements in soil fertility attributes. The combination of sunflower cake and drill cuttings contributed to sunflower growth and nutrient contents. The mixture of drill cuttings and sunflower cake has potential for use as agricultural input

    Abstract Introduction: Polynucleotide phosphorylase is involved in RNA processing in mitochondria. Biallelic variants in PNPT1 cause mitochondrial RNA import protein deficiency and heterogeneous clinical manifestations.
    Case report: The patiest was the first child of remote consanguineous parents, born at 35 weeks by caesarean section due to fetal growth restriction. Apgar index was 9/10/10. Birth weight, length and head circumference were at 3rd, <3rd and 10th percentiles, respectively. In the first hours of life, respiratory distress, hypoglycaemia and seizures ensued. She started invasive mechanic ventilation, phenobarbital and was transferred to ICU. Physical examination showed minor facial dysmorphisms, brief eye-opening, hypotonia and hyporeflexia. Electroencephalogram showed immature pattern and multifocal paroxysmal activity. MRI at D8 of life showed severe reduced brain volume. Normal aminoacid screen was also observed. Expanded newborn screening was negative. Mitochondrial organic aciduria was seen. WES showed a homozygotic likely pathogenic variant in the PNPT1 gene. MRI at 6-months showed brain atrophy, thin corpus callosum, reduced brainstem volume. Bilateral and symmetrical lesions in globi pallidi, compatible with Leigh síndrome were observed. Currently, at 14 months, no neurodevelopment progress, dystonia, visual deficit, sensorineural deafness, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and microcephaly are observed.
    Conclusion: The early and severe Leigh-like presentation of our patient expands the phenotype spectrum of this disease. As far as we know, this is the first reported case of PNPT1 mutation with onset in the perinatal period. Moreover, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has not yet been described in association with mutation of the PNPT1 gene. WES was the key for early diagnosis in this patient. It should be done in all children with severe clinical presentation of unknown origin.
