Abstract: ... of immediate hypersensitivity for foods in allergic children from Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez.: Material and ...

Title translation Hypersensitivity detected by skin tests to food in allergic patients in the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez.
Abstract Background: The prevalence of food allergy depends on the feeding practices of different parts of the world. Peanuts and nuts cause a great part of allergies in the United States; in Spain and Portugal are commonly due to fish, milk; in Italy seafood and mustard in France. In Mexico we don't know the frequency of food allergy and involved groups of age or specific foods.
Objective: To determine the frequency of immediate hypersensitivity for foods in allergic children from Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez.
Material and methods: A retrospective study was performed between January 1995 to December 1999. The skin prick test (SPT) to food was reviewed according to Aas classification. Male and female from 12 months to 18 years old were reviewed.
Results: We documented 1,419 patients with allergy. Of them 442 (31%) had positive skin prick test (SPT) to some of the 33 tested foods. The average age of the study group was of 12.8 years. The most affected was from 4 to 7 years (49%); the second group from 1 to 3 years with 23.7%, and the third was from 12 to 17 years with 13.5%. Fish, milky, seafood, soy, beans, orange, onion, tomato, chicken, nut, lettuce and strawberry, were responsible for 58% of the total of allergic reactions. Of those fish, milk, seafood, soy and orange (39%) had the highest frequency. Hypersensitivity to several foods is low, finding just one allergen in 50% of the cases, two allergens in 25%, three allergens in 9%, four in 7%, five in 5% and more than 6 only in 3% of cases.
Conclusion: We concluded that almost any kind of food reaction seen in our study was due to alimentary habits of different populations, socioeconomic status, and availability of foods. This indicates the diversity of costumes in Mexican people due to the wide geographical area and cultural background of our country. Results could be increased because of only 33 allergens were tested.

Title translation Biological features and experimental pathogenicity of Candida strains isolated by hemoculture at the Hospital Infantil de México "Federico Gómez".
Abstract In a period of 15 months (1990-1991) it was carried out 5781 blood cultures in which 180 strains of yeast-like were isolated. 116 of these strains were selected for biochemical classification, cellular and colonial morphology and experimental determination of virulence in mice. Most of the strains were classified as Candida albicans (60%) and the others were C. tropicalis (15.5%); C. guillermondii (10.3%); T. glabrata (6.8%); Rhodotorula rubra (3.4%); Cryptococcus neoformans (2.58%) y C. parapsilosis (0.86%). C. albicans ATCC14053, y C. tropicalis ATCC14056 and T. glabrata ATCC15545 were employed as controls. The virulence test was performed using mice of 20-30 gr (4-6 weeks age) by intravenous injection in caudal vein with 0.5 ml of different suspension from 10(5) to 10(9) CFU/ml. Observation time was 10 days. Target organ was kidney by macro and microscopic observation of micro-abscess death. LD50 was estimated by the Reed-muench method. Intraspecific and interspecific differences were observed. It is more valid if we take into account that the experiment was done in homogenous population of host without risk factor which influences the human population in hospitals. Experimental virulence was compared with the evolution of diseases in the human host of which the strain was isolated.

Abstract Objective: The present study examined the association of BMI, fat mass, physical activity engagement (PA), maximal oxygen consumption (VO
Design: A non-randomised design was used. A multilinear regression model was developed using backward elimination. Analysis included variables pertaining to age, BMI, VO
Setting: Two state and three mixed funding schools in Granada, Spain.
Participants: Data were collected from 244 children aged between 10 and 12 years.
Results: Better AP, higher PA engagement and lower screen time were found to be predictive of MD adherence. These variables explained 22·9 % of the variance in data measuring adolescent MD adherence.
Conclusions: The present study suggests that, in addition to SES, PA, AP and screen time are important components to consider when targeting improvements in MD adherence in children. It is, therefore, concluded that interventions targeting improvements in PA, AP and screen time are needed to promote MD adherence in children, regardless of SES.

Abstract Carbapenem and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii leads the World Health Organization's list of priority pathogens and represents an unmet medical need. Understanding the mechanisms underpinning the acquisition of antibiotic resistance in this pathogen is fundamental to the development of novel therapeutics as well as to infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship strategies designed to limit its spread. In their investigation, "Interbacterial Transfer of Carbapenem Resistance and Large Antibiotic Resistance Islands by Natural Transformation in Pathogenic Acinetobacter," Anne-Sophie Godeux and colleagues (mBio 13:e0263121, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1128/mBio.02631-21) delineate the unsuspected extent and circumstances under which natural transformation as a mechanism of intraspecies and interspecies exchange of genetic material occurs in Acinetobacter spp. This study offers key insights into how this notorious pathogen may have accelerated the development of its MDR phenotype via an unexpectedly robust and unnervingly casual approach to the acquisition of antibiotic resistance determinants through natural transformation.
