Abstract In the Chinese context, translations have served as a useful conduit for providing access to wider literature authored in other languages. A prominent question has been whether translators' linguistic choices are influenced by factors such as translators' social and cultural background and emotions towards the texts they are translating. When multiple translations of the same text over a span of time are produced, another layer of complexity is introduced, and research such as the present study, must examine how or whether variation in the expression of emotions within translations produced over a period of time is discernible. To this end, the present study made use of Lexicon-based Sentiment Analysis (LBSA), a common natural language processing (NLP) approach, to study people's attitudes, opinions or emotions towards a certain person or thing. LBSA has attracted much attention in the literary works or translated works for analyzing reader response and appraisal of the works themselves. The present study undertook a diachronic comparison of emotions and sentiments in five translations of David Copperfield based on the emotion lexicons. The corpus of the study comprised translations of five books and 3,084,599 tokens. We applied the computational method of emotion and sentiment analysis to the emotion words in the five translations. In addition, we used python and R package to analyze the positive and negative words in five versions. The study revealed that translators as social beings in the target world express unique reactions towards the same emotion in the original text as well as in literary translations. Yet, the modern vernacular Chinese versions also showcase a similarity in the expression of emotions thus demonstrating the decisive role of the overall flow of emotion in the original plays and in translation. The contribution of the study is significant as it is a pioneering investigation given that it undertakes a sentiment and emotion analysis of literary translations in Chinese.

Abstract David Alexander Draffin was an Irish ENT surgeon and inventor of the internationally famous ENT instrument used in tonsillectomy, which carries his name and is called Draffin's rods. His story is not as well-known as his eponymous ENT instrument and this article attempts to shed a light into his life. He studied in Queen's University in Belfast and was a medical officer in World War II. During that time, he demonstrated great courage and spirit. On his return from the war, he worked in many hospitals as an ENT surgeon and published multiple articles. His career was an unconventional one though, since due to multiple extracurricular activities he never became a consultant! He was actually struck off the medical register for drink-driving charges just a little before his early death. His life was evidence of his bravery, innovative spirit and mischief and his legacy shaped the way tonsillectomies are done to this day.

Abstract Introduction: Current international guidelines recommend non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) for stroke prevention among patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) at significant ischaemic stroke risk given the superior safety and comparable efficacy of NOACs over warfarin. Nonetheless, the safety and effectiveness of NOACs have not been evaluated in patients with AF with underlying moderate or severe mitral stenosis (MS), hence the recommended stroke prevention strategy remains warfarin therapy.
Method and analysis: MS remains disproportionately prevalent in Asian countries compared with the developed countries. This prospective, randomised, open-label trial with blinded endpoint adjudication aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of dabigatran for stroke prevention in AF patients with moderate or severe MS. Patients with AF aged ≥18 years with moderate or severe MS not planned for valvular intervention in the coming 12 months will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive dabigatran 110 mg or 150 mg two times per day or warfarin with international normalised ratio 2-3 in an open-label design. Patients with estimated creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, or with a concomitant indication for antiplatelet therapy will be excluded. The primary outcome is a composite of stroke and systemic embolism. Secondary outcomes are ischaemic stroke, systemic embolism, haemorrhagic stroke, intracranial haemorrhage, major bleeding and death. The estimated required sample size is approximately 686 participants.
Ethics and dissemination: The study protocol has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong West Cluster, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong for Fung Yiu King Hospital, Grantham Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital and Tung Wah Hospital in Hong Kong. Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals.
    Trial registration number: ClinicalTrials.gov Registry (NCT04045093); pre-results.

Abstract Gigantic coordination molecules assembled from a large number of metal ions and organic ligands are structurally and functionally challenging to characterize. Here we show that a heterometallic cluster [Ni₃₆Gd₁₀₂(OH)₁₃₂(mmt)₁₈(dmpa)₁₈(H₂dmpa)₂₄(CH₃COO)₈₄(SO₄)₁₈(NO₃)₁₈(H₂O)₃₀]·Br₆(NO₃)₆·(H₂O)ₓ·(CH₃OH)y, (1, x ≈ 130, y ≈ 60), shaped like a “Star of David”, can be synthesized using a “mixed-ligand” and “sulfate-template” strategy. In terms of metal nuclearity number, 1 is the second largest 3d–4f cluster to date. In the solid state, 1 is porous after removing the lattice guests. The N₂ adsoption experiment reveals that the BET and Langmuir surface areas are 299.8 and 412.0 cm² g–¹, respectively. CO₂ adsorption at 298 K gives the amount of 45 cm³ g–¹ for 1. More importantly, 1 is soluble in common organic solvents and exhibits high solution stability revealed by high resolution MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and low-dose transmission electron microscopy. The solubility and the potential open metal sites owing to the labile coordinating components prompted us to investigate the photocatalytic properties of 1, which displays high selectivity and efficiency for reduction of CO₂ to CO with turnover number and turnover frequency of 29700 and 1.2 s–¹, respectively. These values are higher than most catalysts working under the same conditions, presumably due to the strong Ni–CO₂ binding effect. In addition, the large percentage of Gd(III) in 1 leads to a large magnetic entropy change (41.3 J·kg–¹·K–¹) at 2.0 K for ΔH = 7 T.
