    Abstract Natural biopolymers derived from exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are considered eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to available traditional synthetic counterparts. Salt-tolerant bacteria inhabiting harsh ecological niches have evolved a number of unique adaptation strategies allowing them to maintain cellular integrity and assuring their long-term survival; among these, producing EPSs can be adopted as an effective strategy to thrive under high-salt conditions. A great diversity of EPSs from salt-tolerant bacteria have attracted widespread attention recently. Because of factors such as their unique structural, physicochemical, and functional characteristics, EPSs are commercially valuable for the global market and their application potential in various sectors is promising. However, large-scale production and industrial development of these biopolymers are hindered by their low yields and high costs. Consequently, the research progress and future prospects of salt-tolerant bacterial EPSs must be systematically reviewed to further promote their application and commercialization. In this review, the structure and properties of EPSs produced by a variety of salt-tolerant bacterial strains isolated from different sources are summarized. Further, feasible strategies for solving production bottlenecks are discussed, which provides a scientific basis and direct reference for more scientific and rational EPS development.

    Abstract Background: Despite the known inflammatory nature of osteoarthritis (OA) and the established role of C-reactive protein (CRP) as an inflammation marker, the influence of alcohol consumption on the CRP-OA relationship remains uncertain, with previous research providing conflicting results.
    Objectives: This study aims to examine the potential moderating effect of alcohol on the association between CRP concentrations and self-reported OA.
    Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 50,259 participants, all data collected from NHANES between 2005-2010 and 2015-2018. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between CRP and OA.
    Results: We found a nonsignificant positive association between CRP concentration and prevalence of self-reported OA after adjusting for covariates in the raw dataset or 5 multiple imputed datasets. In the stratified analysis by alcohol drinking, for every 10 mg/L higher in CRP concentration, the prevalence of self-reported OA was higher by 13 % in nondrinkers (P = 0.007, adjusted for covariates). Conversely, for every 10 mg/L higher in CRP concentration, the prevalence of self-reported OA was lower by 59 % in drinkers (P = 0.005, adjusted for covariates). Furthermore, we discovered that the directions of the association between CRP concentrations (10 mg/L) and prevalence of self-reported OA [odds ratio (OR) < 1 in the drinking subgroup and OR > 1 in the no-drinking subgroup] were stable in both the main and sensitivity analyses. The significant interaction between CRP concentration and alcohol drinking on the prevalence of self-reported OA was shown in most of our analyses (P-interaction < 0.05).
    Conclusion: Alcohol consumption may be an interaction factor between CRP and self-reported OA. To our knowledge, our findings are the first to highlight the importance of incorporating analysis of alcohol consumption differences into future studies of CRP and self-reported OA.

    Abstract Background: Suppressors with different dead volumes are required to match different suppressed ion chromatography systems. Especially for suppressed open tubular ion chromatography (SOTIC), the dead volume is a critical parameter. Both connection tubes between open tubular (OT) columns and suppressors and the dead volumes of the suppressors should be as short/small as possible to minimize peak dispersion. Suppressors with different dead volumes are required to match the various suppressed ion chromatography systems that operate at low flow rates 20-200 nL/min.
    Results: We describe three designs of on-column capillary suppressors for SOTIC: (A) on-column electrodialytic suppressor prepared by making small cracks on the cycloolefin polymer (COP) capillary at targeted locations, (B) on-column electrodialytic suppressor built on a polyether ether ketone (PEEK) capillary by removing the wall materials at target locations, (C) on-column chemical suppressor based on a single cut on a PEEK capillary at a targeted location a single cut on a PEEK capillary at a targeted location. The on-column electrodialytic suppressors work in two different modes with suppression voltage applied in co-current and counter-current direction to the eluent flow. Because of very narrow column inner diameter (i.d.), up to several hundred volts were required to suppress the hydroxide eluent, but it was found the there was a >90% loss of analytes in the suppressor accompanied with a high noise level after on-column electrodialytic suppression. Theoretical analysis reveals that high suppression voltage significantly affects the retention of specific analytes by electromigration. Further analysis indicated that the electrodialytic on-column suppressor in co-current mode would behave totally different from traditional suppressors. The on-column chemical suppression, with minimum dead volume of 0.27 nL, provides fairly well suppression of low hydroxide eluent without analyte loss in the suppressor.     Significance: Different on-column suppressors have been designed on OT columns with i.d.s less than 30 μm. Two electrodialytic on-column suppressor designs with eluent flow parallel to the direction of electric field were proposed and tested. The eluent flow rate, analytes' retention behavior, resistance of suppression channel, current-voltage relationship, and working principles in both co-current and counter-current were experimentally investigated and comprehensively discussed. It was found that although the on-column electrodialytic suppressions (Design A and B) are not feasible in practice, the electrodialytic on-column suppressor on co-current mode has a potential of being used as an enriching capillary column for analyte ions. Design C provides fairly well chemical suppression. Theoretical calculation indicates that the loss of column efficiency can be controlled within 3%.

    Abstract In this article, we study the problem of Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking of N -player games with high-order integrator agents over jointly strongly connected networks. The same problem was studied recently over static, undirected, and connected networks. Since a jointly strongly connected network can be directed and disconnected at every time instant, our result strictly includes the existing results as special cases. Moreover, in addition to some analytic conditions on the payoff functions, the existing results also rely on the satisfaction of an inequality involving some Lipschitz constant and the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian of the network graph. By adopting a different approach, our result does not rely on the satisfaction of this inequality. Furthermore, our result can also be extended to the case where the additive disturbances are imposed on the input of each agent. Our design is illustrated by two numerical examples.

    Abstract Cell-in-cell (CIC) structures have been suggested to mediate intracellular substance transport between cells and have been found widely in inflammatory lung tissue of asthma. The aim of this study was to investigate the significance of CIC structures in inflammatory progress of asthma. CIC structures and related inflammatory pathways were analyzed in asthmatic lung tissue and normal lung tissue of mouse model. In vitro, the activation of inflammatory pathways by CIC-mediated intercellular communication was analyzed by RNA-Seq and verified by Western blotting and immunofluorescence. Results showed that CIC structures of lymphocytes and alveolar epithelial cells in asthmatic lung tissue mediated intercellular substance (such as mitochondria) transfer and promoted pro-inflammation in two phases. At early phase, internal lymphocytes triggered inflammasome-dependent pro-inflammation and cell death of itself. Then, degraded lymphocytes released cellular contents such as mitochondria inside alveolar epithelial cells, further activated multi-pattern-recognition receptors and NF-kappa B signaling pathways of alveolar epithelial cells, and thereby amplified pro-inflammatory response in asthma. Our work supplements the mechanism of asthma pro-inflammation progression from the perspective of CIC structure of lymphocytes and alveolar epithelial cells, and provides a new idea for anti-inflammatory therapy of asthma.

    Abstract Background: The increasing incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a global health problem that is more likely to occur in pregnant women with overweight or obesity. Adhering to a healthy lifestyle is associated with a reduced risk of GDM. With the development of IT, mobile health (mHealth) interventions have become widely available in health care. However, there are no definitive conclusions on the effectiveness of mHealth-based lifestyle interventions in preventing GDM.
    Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impact of mHealth-based lifestyle interventions on GDM and other pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with overweight or obesity.
    Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in 5 English databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, and CINAHL) and 4 Chinese databases (CBM, CNKI, Vip, and Wanfang) to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of mHealth-based interventions for GDM from inception to January 10, 2023. In total, 2 authors independently screened the studies and extracted the data. The quality of the included studies was examined using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Data synthesis was conducted using Review Manager (version 5.4; The Cochrane Collaboration).
    Results: A total of 16 RCTs with 7351 participants were included in this study. The included studies were published between 2014 and 2021 and were conducted in China, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Norway. The sample sizes of the studies ranged from 75 to 2202, and the duration of the mHealth-based lifestyle interventions ranged from 4 to 28 weeks. Compared with usual care, mHealth-based lifestyle interventions significantly reduced the incidence of GDM (odds ratio [OR] 0.74, 95% CI 0.56-0.96; P=.03; I
    Conclusions: mHealth-based lifestyle interventions had a favorable impact on the prevention of GDM in pregnant women with overweight and obesity. Future studies need to further explore the potential of mHealth-based interventions for GDM through better design and more rigorous large-scale RCTs.

    Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) have been wildly synthesised and studied as electrode materials for supercapacitors, and bimetallic MOF of Ni and Co has been broadly studied to enhance both specific capacitance and stability of supercapacitors. Herein, a best performance (about 320 F/g) of Ni-Co bimetallic MOF was found in a uniform preparation condition by adjusting the ratio of Ni to Co. Then tiny third metal ion was introduced, and we found that the morphology of material has a significant change on the original basis. Furthermore, certain ions (Zn, Fe, Mn) introduced make a huge improvement in capacitance based on Ni-Co MOF of 320 F/g. The result shows that Zn-Ni-Co MOF, Fe-Ni-Co MOF and Mn-Ni-Co MOF perform specific capacitance of 1135 F/g, 870 F/g and 760F/g at 1 A/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was constructed by Zn-Ni-Co MOF as positive electrode and active carbon (AC) as negative electrode. The Zn-Ni-Co MOF//AC ASC possesses a energy density of 58 Wh/kg at a power density of 775 W/kg. This research provides a new methods to regulate the morphology of MOF and a novel viewpoint for assembling high-performance, low-price, and eco-friendly green energy storage devices.

    Abstract Odontoblastic differentiation of human stem cells from the apical papilla (hSCAPs) is crucial for continued root development and dentin formation in immature teeth with apical periodontitis (AP). Fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) has been reported to regulate bone regeneration and osteogenic differentiation profoundly. However, the effect of FTO on hSCAPs remains unknown. This study aimed to identify the potential function of FTO in hSCAPs' odontoblastic differentiation under normal and inflammatory conditions and to investigate its underlying mechanism preliminarily. Histological staining and micro-computed tomography were used to evaluate root development and FTO expression in SD rats with induced AP. The odontoblastic differentiation ability of hSCAPs was assessed via alkaline phosphatase and alizarin red S staining, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting. Gain- and loss-of-function assays and online bioinformatics tools were conducted to explore the function of FTO and its potential mechanism in modulating hSCAPs differentiation. Significantly downregulated FTO expression and root developmental defects were observed in rats with AP. FTO expression notably increased during in vitro odontoblastic differentiation of hSCAPs, while lipopolysaccharide (LPS) inhibited FTO expression and odontoblastic differentiation. Knockdown of FTO impaired odontoblastic differentiation, whereas FTO overexpression alleviated the inhibitory effects of LPS on differentiation. Furthermore, FTO promoted the expression of secreted modular calcium-binding protein 2 (SMOC2), and the knockdown of SMOC2 in hSCAPs partially attenuated the promotion of odontoblastic differentiation mediated by FTO overexpression under LPS-induced inflammation. This study revealed that FTO positively regulates the odontoblastic differentiation ability of hSCAPs by promoting SMOC2 expression. Furthermore, LPS-induced inflammation compromises the odontoblastic differentiation of hSCAPs by downregulating FTO, highlighting the promising role of FTO in regulating hSCAPs differentiation under the inflammatory microenvironment.
