Abstract The challenges faced in provision of high quality and effective care to geriatric psychiatric inpatients are substantial for all members of the interdisciplinary team. Common care dilemmas, including the interplay of social, medical, and psychiatric factors in treating complex patients, are perhaps best understood by examining such a case. The hypothetical case of "Helen" illustrates the multi-dimensional and often perplexing care needs of patients admitted multiple times for inpatient care. Linked nursing diagnoses, outcomes and interventions, and interdisciplinary care plans emphasize the changing care needs of such patients.

Abstract The use of veterinary biologicals is an integral component of poultry health programs. All veterinary biologicals are licensed and sold by manufacturing firms under strict regulation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure purity, potency, efficacy, and safety of the product. The licensing process for a new vaccine is a complex process involving a defined set of studies for each type of vaccine that are performed by the biologics firm, according to approved protocols, with results submitted to the Center for Veterinary Biologics for review. There are 10 classifications of veterinary biologicals and four types of licenses. Manufacturing and testing procedures are also defined within the licensing process. Licensing requirements were initially codified into law. In addition, guidance documents in the form of memoranda and notices have been published to address licensing for additional classes of vaccines and disease agents. This overview of vaccine licensure in the United States is offered to provide a better understanding of the process, the participants, and the factors that influence the time required to produce a commercial product.

Abstract RNA is a major player in cellular function, and consequently can drive a number of disease pathologies. Over the past several years, small molecule-RNA targeting (smRNA targeting) has developed into a promising drug discovery approach. Numerous techniques, tools, and assays have been developed to support this field, and significant investments have been made by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. To date, the focus has been on identifying disease validated primary targets for smRNA drug development, yet RNA as a secondary (off) target for all small molecule drug programs largely has been unexplored. In this perspective, we discuss structure, target, and mechanism-driven safety aspects of smRNAs and highlight how these parameters can be evaluated in drug discovery programs to produce potentially safer drugs.

Abstract In this study we interrogate 630 compounds of the Maybridge Rule of 3 Fragment Library for compounds that interact with, and inhibit TbCK. The Maybridge Rule of 3 Fragment Library is a small collection of quantifiable diverse, pharmacophoric rich, chemical entities that comply with the following criteria; MW ≤ 300, cLogP ≤ 3, H-Bond Acceptors ≤ 3, H-Bond Donors ≤ 3, Rotatable bonds (Flexibility Index) ≤ 3, Polar Surface Area ≤ 60 Å2 and aqueous solubility ≥ 1 mM using LogS and high purity (≥ 95%). Comparisons between two different screening methods, a coupled enzyme activity assay and differential scanning fluorimetry, has allowed identification of compounds that interact and inhibit the T. brucei choline kinase, several of which possess selective trypanocidal activity. Screening of a comparatively small fragment library by two different screening methods has allowed identification of several compounds that interact with and inhibit TbCK, a genetically validated drug target against African sleeping sickness. Some of the inhibitory fragments were also selectively trypanocidal, considering these are relatively simple molecules with no optimization, finding low μΜ inhibitors is very encouraging. Moreover some of the morphological phenotypes of these trypanocidal compounds include cell-cycle arrests similar to those observed for the TbCK conditional knockout grown under permissive conditions
