Abstract Preference assessments are often used to identify stimuli that function as potential reinforcers for training or intervention purposes. Specifically, various preference assessment formats have been used to identify preferred stimuli for humans, cockroaches, cotton-top tamarins, tortoises, and wolves, to name a few. However, to date, no study has evaluated the differential efficacy between food and leisure stimuli within domestic dogs. The current study aimed to compare the reinforcing value and efficacy between food and leisure stimuli for domestic dogs by comparing rates of behavior when receiving access to either their top-preferred food or leisure items. Overall results suggest (1) domestic dogs prefer food over leisure items, and (2) food is more likely to function as a reinforcer than leisure items for domestic dog’s behavior. These results suggest that dog owners and trainers should consider using food reinforcers over leisure items as reinforcers when attempting to train dogs.

Abstract The aim of this paper was to evaluate production and transaction costs in organic tomatoes and sweet peppers value chain. The study was conducted in Arusha and Unguja. A preliminary survey was conducted in 2014, and then a stratified sampling procedure was used to select a sample of producers, tourist hoteliers and suppliers. The regions Arusha and Unguja were selected purposively and key informant interviews and snowballing sampling procedures were also used. The Heckman’s procedure was used to analyze factors affecting the probability and extent of participation in tomatoes and sweet peppers markets. The probit results from the Heckman’s two-stage process show that ownership of assets such as storage facilities, transportation assets and being under contract farming or farmers cooperatives increased the probability of market participation, while the heckit results (OLS corrected for selectivity bias) shows that experience in marketing increased the quantities of tomatoes and sweet peppers marketed while high marketing costs such as mobile phone costs decreased the quantities of tomatoes and sweet peppers marketed. Organic producers’ cooperatives and collective marketing strategies are the possible solutions to reduce transaction costs, improve access to the tourism market, and increasing shelf life by having collective storage facilities and transport. Policy changes that will ensure producers sell under cooperatives and collective marketing strategies should be implemented to improve producers’ market access.

Abstract Introduction: Pregnancy is a time of physiological, psychological, personal and social changes for women. The role of the emotional and psychological aspect encompasses the entire period because as fetal development advances, the mother-baby relationship strengthens, making the mother vulnerable. Objectives: To collect, describe and analyze relevant information on mental health in pregnant women, both at different stages of gestation and before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A literature search was conducted through PubMed, Google Scholar and Scielo using terminology compiled from MeSH and DeCs. Results: Pregnancy due to hormonal changes causes the presence of anxiety and depression that worsen as the stages of fetal development progress. These psychological disorders have greatly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic due to several reasons such as the relationship with the couple, uncertainty, fear, anguish and increasing phobia about contagion. Final considerations: Pregnant women are a vulnerable population, whose mental health has always been affected and nowadays it has been much more affected due to the pandemic, therefore they need better attention in the health sector such as providing them with reliable information on measures to alleviate the burden of stressors, since they not only carry the anguish of their health but also that of the fetus.

Abstract Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) is a potexvirus recently identified as the causal agent of a new disease occurring in protected tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) crops in the Netherlands (2). PepMV has been subsequently identified in England, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. The new disease has become a serious problem for tomato production in Europe. Most infected tomato plants expressed leaf distortion, chlorosis, and yellow mosaic. Other plants expressed mosaic and bubbling of the leaf surface. Tomato fruits showing severe discoloration and mosaic were observed in protected tomato crops. Symptoms attenuated in tomato plants as the ambient temperature increased. At present, only Solanum muricatum Ait. (Peruvian pepino) and L. esculentum are affected by PepMV.To determine possible reservoir hosts for this virus, 70 samples from Amaranthus sp., A. viridis (L.) Britton et al., Chenopodium murale L., Convolvulus arvensis L., Malva parviflora L., Nicotiana glauca Grah., Polypogon monspeliensis (L.) Desf., Senecio vulgaris L., Sisybrium sp., Solanum nigrum L., and Sonchus oleraceus L. were analyzed. The plants were collected around greenhouses affected by PepMV from different regions in Spain (Murcia and Canary Islands). The samples were analyzed for PepMV by double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with a commercial antiserum (DSMZ AS-0554, Biologische Bundesantstal, Braunschweig, Germany). Only Amaranthus sp., M. parviflora, N. glauca, Solanum nigrum, and Sonchus oleraceus tested postive. The presence of PepMV in these weed species was confirmed by electron microscopy and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction using degenerate primers for potexvirus (1). All the hosts analyzed were asymptomatic. However, symptoms were reproduced by mechanically inoculating tomato plants with sap from naturally infected weeds. To our knowledge, this is the first report of natural infection of weeds by PepMV. References: (1) A. Gibbs et al. J. Virol. Methods 74:67, 1998. (2) R. A. A. Van der Vlugt et al. Abstract Introduction: Breast cancer is a disease that is increasing its incidence annually, so in search of complementary alternatives for treatment have been studied some medicinal plants containing large amounts of polyphenols, which have anticancer effects as is the case of Cenchrus echinatus L. Objective: To determine the safety and protective effect of ethanol extract of Cenchrus echinatus L. (burdock) on breast cancer induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in rats. Methods: Preclinical, experimental study in male Balb/C53 mice and Holtzman rats of both sexes. Acute toxicity and toxicity at 45 days were calculated using probit and OECD methods, respectively; to evaluate the protective effect, the Barros 2004 method was used; tumor cell proliferation was also registered microscopically, using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, considering p<0.05. Results: Safety studies show that the extract does not induce significant hematologic, biochemical and pathological changes level 80% of the protective effect of the extract against DMBA-induced breast cancer in rats was achieved. Conclusions: It has been shown that Cenchrus echinatus extract L. has protective effect on breast cancer by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene induced in rats; and it is not toxic in mice and rats.

Abstract At the beginning of 2000, a damaging disease developed on protected tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) crops grown in polyethylene greenhouses in different regions of Spain. Production losses were estimated at 15 to 80%. The tomato plants showed a variety of symptoms. The most common symptoms were leaf distortion, chlorosis, and mosaic. Some plants showed a dark green mosaic and bubbling of the leaf surface. Green striations were also observed on the stem and sepals. Most of the diseased plants had discolored fruits. Symptoms decreased as environmental temperature increased. The involvement of Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) was suspected. To identify the etiological agent, ≈500 symptomatic tomato plants were collected from several locations in Alicante, Murcia, Almeria and the Canary Islands. Flexuous viral particles 510 nm long were observed by transmission electron microscopy, suggesting the presence of a potexvirus in the tissue extracts analyzed. All samples were tested by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), using polyclonal antibodies to Narcissus mosaic virus (Adgen, Auchincriuve, Scotland), a virus serologically related to PepMV, and two antisera specific to PepMV (Adgen, Scotland and DMSZ, Braunschweig, Germany). PepMV was detected in 35% of the samples. Like PepMV, the virus infected (as confirmed by ELISA) greenhouse-grown Datura stramonium, Nicandra physalodes, Nicotiana benthamiana, N. clevelandii, Solanum tuberosum, and Vigna sinensis and did not infect Capsicum anuum, Cucumis sativus, Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. quinoa, Petunia × hybrida, Phaseolus vulgaris, Physalis floridana, N. glutinosa, N. rustica, or N. tabacum. The virus did infect Gomphrena globosa, which normally is not infected by PepMV. The first report of PepMV was on pepino (Solanum muricatum) in Peru in 1974 (1), but this virus has been recently reported in the Netherlands, England, Germany, and France on protected tomato crops (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of PepMV in Spain, including the Canary Islands. References: (1) R. A. C. Jones et al. Ann. Appl. Biol. 94:61, 1980.
