Abstract There is a visible Argentina and another hidden under the sea. The latter is the natural extension of the mailand and has an enourmous potential in terms of resources. Thanks to the scientific, technical and legal work carried out during the last 20 years, we have a better picture of this hidden Argentina, allowing a new delimitation of the Continental Platform. Argentina presented a proposal to enforce these new limits to the Commission for the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2009, and was studied since 2012 by a group of experts that analyzed the opinions of geologists, hydrologists and diplomats from Argentina on a seemingly unimportant issue: what is the size of underwater platform? This work was accumulated on severals documents, maps and other testimonies for several years, until Argentina was able to expand its continental platform from 200 miles to 350 miles, expanding the original surface by 35%. The Argentine continental shelf has now a surface area of more than 6,500,000 km2, almost twice as large as its mainland surface. This valuable expansion, not only reaffirms our rights over minerals, hydrocarbons and fishes, but it also has strategic implications related to The Malvinas, The South Atlantic Islands and The Antarctica. This work addresses the details of this exhaustive investigation, as well as the related economic impacts

Abstract Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in severe interruptions to clinical research worldwide. This global public health crisis required investigators and researchers to rapidly develop and implement new strategies and solutions to mitigate its negative impact on the progress of clinical trials. In this paper, we describe the challenges, strategies, and lessons learned regarding the continuation of a supportive oncology clinical trial during the pandemic. We hope to provide insight into the implementation of clinical trials during a public health emergency to be better prepared for future instances. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, a service of the US National Institute of Health (NCT 03030859). Registered on 22 January 2017.

Abstract A thermal stability test-rig for organic Rankine cycles working fluids was designed and commissioned at the Laboratory of Compressible-fluid dynamics for Renewable Energy Applications (CREA Lab) of Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with the University of Brescia. The set-up is composed by a vessel containing the fluid, heated for about 80 h at a constant stress temperature. During the test, the pressure is monitored to detect thermal decomposition of the fluid. After the test, the vessel is placed in a thermal bath, where the vapor pressure is measured at different values of temperature lower than the stress temperature and critical temperature and is compared to that obtained before the fluid underwent thermal stress. If departure from the initial fluid behavior is observed, thermal decomposition occurred and a chemical analysis of the sample is carried out on both liquid and vapor phase using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Experimental results are reported for the pure siloxane fluids MM (Hexamethyldisiloxane, C6H18OSi2) and MDM (Octamethyltrisiloxane, C8H24O2Si3), showing that limited but appreciable decomposition is occurring at 240 °C and 260 °C respectively.

Abstract Corpses are an irreplaceable resource for teaching and research in Anatomy. Voluntary donation is the source of cadavers, but in the National University of Cordoba we are struggling with a critical shortage due to the lack of an organized donation program. The objective of this study was to know the attitude of general population of the city of Cordoba about this subject and the profile of potential donors to develop a program. A survey was randomly distributed among older than 18 years. The questionnaire included demographic, educational, laboral and religious aspects and specific ones related to the willingness to donate the own body and reasons to do it, knowledge about this possibility, interest in further information. Two thousand and thirty responses were obtained from a population so diverse that we considered it as representative of the city. Among the respondents, 80% should be willing to donate organs for transplantation and 41% the whole body; with 45% who said to know about donation and 54% interested in more information. Main motives to donate were related to support teaching, research and science; while the main reason not to donate was associated with insuficient information. The profile of potential donors was obtained from the analysis of all the variables and we compared with other studies demonstrating that not only cultural and religious aspects may determine the willingness to donate but also the level of public information and facilities to register as donors.

Abstract A census of the “opisthobranch” fauna in the Faro Lake and connected canals (NE Sicily) has been realized by photo documentation and specimen samplings, carried out monthly from February 2010 to the present. A total of 47 species have been reported, nine of which are cited in the historic and recent literature (from 1969 to 2016) vs. 38 first records; six were non-indigenous species. A major number of species, 16, was found exclusively in the lake with respect to the four species localized in the canals, whilst 10 were shared species. Based on the frequency of records, 24 “occasional”, 20 “settled” and three “invasive” species have been distinguished; these latter included two non-indigenous species, Aplysia dactylomela and Bursatella leachii , plus the Mediterranean Dendrodoris limbata , whose recent introduction in the Faro Lake from other Mediterranean lagoons is here postulated.

Abstract The fan mussel Pinna nobilis (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the biggest bivalves worldwide. Currently, no updated information is available in the literature concerning the morpho-functional aspects of haemocytes from this bivalve species. Consequently, in this study, we characterised P. nobilis haemocytes from both a morphological and functional point of view. The mean number of haemocytes was about 5 (×105) cells mL haemolymph−1, and the cell viability was about 92–100%. Two haemocyte types were distinguished under the light microscope: granulocytes (51.6%), with evident cytoplasmic granules, and hyalinocytes (48.4%), with a few granules. The granules of the granulocytes were mainly lysosomes, as indicated by the in vivo staining with Neutral Red. Haemocytes were further distinguished in basophils (83.75%), acidophils (14.75%) and neutrophils (1.5%). After adhesion to slides and fixation, the cell diameter was approximately 10 μm for granulocytes and 7 μm for hyalinocytes. The granulocytes and hyalinocytes were both positive to the Periodic Acid-Schiff reaction for carbohydrates. Only granulocytes were able to phagocytise yeast cells. The phagocytic index (6%) increased significantly up to twofold after preincubation of yeast in cell-free haemolymph, suggesting that haemolymph has opsonising properties. In addition, haemocytes produce superoxide anion and acid and alkaline phosphatases. Summarising, this preliminary study indicates that both the granulocytes and hyalinocytes circulate in the haemolymph of P. nobilis and that they are active immunocytes.

Abstract Corpses for teaching and research in Anatomy are fundamental, even having high developed technological resources. Although the National University of Cordoba is receiving bodies by donation, the quantity is very scarce and it barely allows the pre-graduate teaching activities, using prosected specimens for practical activities. It is essential to develop a donation program to increase body supply. The objective of the present study is to obtain data about the attitude of Medicine students in relation to body procurement and donation. We collected demographic data to provided a framework for analysis and specific data on organ and body donation. Samples from students of each and all years of the career were considered. For the 97% of the students cadavers were very important to study Anatomy. Most of the total students (94%) should be willing to donate their organs for transplantation, 84% were interested in getting more information on body donation, 42% should donate their own body and 75% could participate in procurement actions. Women were more willing to donate their organs than men, while men were more willing to donate their own bodies. Students who did not profess any religion had better attitude to donation. Medicine students from the National University of Cordoba have evidenced an important commitment to donation not only of organs but also of whole body because they recognize their importance, care future generations and have high values like altruism and solidarity.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic affected all activities. In the university environment, the areas where practical activity is essential were very difficult to compensate for the training deficit. Within the basic subjects of Health Sciences, Anatomy students suffered from the impossibility of accessing cadaveric material, but also many other resources. The objective of this study was to assess the opinion of the students regarding the changes imposed by the pandemic and their attitude towards donating their own bodies. Material and Method: A voluntary survey was carried out to the students who attended in 2020 and 2021, with different levels of restrictions and information regarding donation. The questions referred to demographic data, importance that is assigned to the bodies for the learning of Anatomy, if they were student assistants in that period, if the pandemic affected their training, if they know that the body can be donated and that the Faculty has a program, if they would like to obtain more information, collaborate and / or donate their own body. The results showed great similarity, except that Group 2 had less knowledge of the possibility of donating and the existence of a program, without affecting the will to donate. Also the reasons for not donating were a bit more ambiguous in that group. In addition, some results were compared with similar groups from 2018, showing that the study groups valued cadaveric material less but had a more positive attitude towards donation.
