Abstract Sleep is an instinct behavior, and its significance and functions are still an enigma. It is expressed throughout one's life and its loss affects psycho-somatic and physiological processes. We had proposed that it might maintain a fundamental property of the neurons and the brain. In that context, it was shown that sleep, rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) in particular, by regulating noradrenaline (NA), maintains the brain excitability. It was also reported that sleep-loss affected memory, reaction time and decision-making ability among others. However, as there was lack of clarity on the cause-and-effect relationship as to how the sleep-loss could affect these basic behaviors, their association was questioned and it was difficult to propose a cure or at least ways and means to ameliorate the symptoms. Also, we wanted to conduct the studies in a simpler model system so that conducting future molecular studies might be easier. Hence, using zebrafish as a model we evaluated if sleep-loss affected the basic decision-making ability, a cognitive process and if the effect was induced by NA. Indeed, our findings confirmed that upon sleep-deprivation, the cognitive decision-making ability of the prey zebrafish was compromised to protect itself by running away from the reach of the exposed predator Tiger Oscar (TO) fish. Also, we observed that upon sleep-loss the axonal arborization of the prey zebrafish brain was reduced. Interestingly, the effects were prevented by prazosin (PRZ), an α1-adrenoceptor (AR) antagonist and when the zebrafish recovered from the lost sleep.

Abstract Background: The reproductive maternal newborn child health + adolescence (RMNCH + A) strategy is based on the provision of comprehensive care through the five pillars, or thematic areas, of reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child, and adolescent health, and is guided by central tenets of equity, universal care, entitlement, and accountability. This study aims to assess the services available in public health facilities among the selected high-priority districts (HPDs) of Jharkhand under RMNCH + A and also to compare the services available in public health facilities among different HPDs of Jharkhand under RMNCH + A. Materials and Methods: The proposed study was an observational study done by the Department of PSM/Community Medicine, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, with a total duration of the study (24 months) (April 2015–March 2017). Supportive supervision (SS) was conducted in the HPDs selected as Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Simdega of Jharkhand state. The Government of India SS checklist was used during the field visits as data collection tool. After visit, compiled report was prepared as observations. Results: The observations of the visits were done under three broad headings of health-care utilization, health system, and service delivery in a comparative manner for all the five HPDs. It was found that outpatient department numbers and deliveries of pregnant women were maximum at district hospitals. Some logistics such as comprehensive abortion care needs to be ensured at the health facilities. Immunization services were available in almost all the selected facilities. Supply of few drugs such as albendazole, salbutamol, and zinc needed to be ensured so that it can be served to the poor and deprived population of the selected districts. Conclusion: It was concluded from the study that under various public health facilities are available at different health centers of the state which are being utilized by the beneficiaries in huge numbers. Some facilities still need to be ...

Abstract AbstractThe North East (NE) India is regarded as one of the most seismically active regions of the globe. It is surrounded by two active plate boundaries (the Indian-Eurasian Plate boundary and the Indian-Burmese plate boundary), followed by rotation in the central part. As per the Seismic zonation map of India, most parts of NE India is classified under single seismic zone (zone V). However, numerous studies have shown significant variations in seismic activity as well as seismic hazard values across the NE. Present work attempts deaggregation of seismic hazard to identify seismic sources which control probabilistic seismic hazard values across the NE. With dominating fault mechanisms, seismic activity, and non-uniform past earthquake (EQ) records across NE, identifying controlling sources is crucial in order to understand the present and future seismic scenarios. Spatial distribution of seismic hazard levels and uncertainties are estimated using the Monte Carlo approach to sample a logic tree with alternate methods and models. As per the present findings, Manipur and Nagaland have highest seismic hazard in the NE, controlled by Indo-Burmese ranges. Further, seismic hazard of Guwahati, Shillong and Gangtok are significantly influenced by great EQs. In other parts, regional major to strong EQ sources control the seismic hazard values. Additionally, EQs with magnitude lesser than 4.5 have lower contributions to regional seismic hazards.
