Abstract Despite the availability of technological advances in traditional anti-cancer therapies, there is a need for more precise and targeted cancer treatment strategies. The wide-ranging shortfalls of conventional anticancer therapies such as systematic toxicity, compromised life quality, and limited to severe side effects are major areas of concern of conventional cancer treatment approaches. Owing to the expansion of knowledge and technological advancements in the field of cancer biology, more innovative and safe anti-cancerous approaches such as immune therapy, gene therapy and targeted therapy are rapidly evolving with the aim to address the limitations of conventional therapies. The concept of immunotherapy began with the capability of coley toxins to stimulate toll-like receptors of immune cells to provoke an immune response against cancers. With an in-depth understating of the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis and their relationship to disease prognosis, molecular targeted therapy approaches, that inhibit or stimulate specific cancer-promoting or cancer-inhibitory molecules respectively, have offered promising outcomes. In this review, we evaluate the achievement and challenges of these technically advanced therapies with the aim of presenting the overall progress and perspective of each approach.

Abstract Introduction: Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) is caused by avian bornavirus (ABV) has been identified in psittacine, non-psittacine birds and waterfowl. Birds may show signs of gastrointestinal tract deficit or neurological dysfunction or even both. The objectives of this study were to determine the molecular prevalence, risk factors and public awareness of ABV and PDD among captive and non-captive birds in Peninsular Malaysia.
Material and methods: A total of 344 cloacal swabs or faeces were collected and subjected to detection using the RT-PCR assay. Meanwhile, KAP questionnaires were distributed by using the Google forms platform.
Results: Molecular prevalence studies revealed that 4.5% (9/201) of the pet birds were ABV-positive, whereas 0% (0/143) in waterfowl. Nine positive pet birds were identified to be PaBV-2, which is closest to ABV isolates EU781967 (USA). Among the risk factors analysed, category, age and, location, were found to show an association with the ABV positivity. The KAP survey result showed: the respondents have low knowledge (32.9%), however, they showed positive attitude (60.8%) and good practice (94.9%). The association between knowledge, attitude and practice showed that there was a significant association between knowledge-attitude and also attitude-practice (P<0.05).
Conclusion: This study proved that avian bornavirus (ABV) causes proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) among a group of pet birds of

Abstract Foodborne pathogens have become a major concern not only due to the diseases they cause, but also because of the rise of antibiotic resistant strains in human and animals. The purposes of this study were to determine the occurrence of Campylobacter jejuni and Escherichia coli and their antibiotic resistance profiles in wild birds, chickens, humans, and the environment in Malay villages in Malaysia. Three Malay villages in Kota Setar, Kedah were chosen. Three hundred nine (309) samples were collected in this study including wild birds (38), chickens (71), humans (47), and the environment (153). Subsequently, the C. jejuni and E coli isolates were tested against antibiotics using the disc diffusion method. Campylobacter jejuni was found positive in 17 (37.8%) flies and 8 (11.3%) chickens. Also, E. coli was found positive in 89.4% of human, 47.4% of bird, 44 62% of chicken and in 71.2% of the environmental samples. Ten antibiotics were used to determine the susceptibility of the isolates. Eighty four percent (84%) of C. jejuni and 100% of E. coli isolates were found to show resistance towards at least one antibiotic. The isolates showed high resistance to cefpodoxime and tetracycline.

Abstract Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is a proactive and collaborative method for environmental management designed to integrate environmental considerations into decision-making; and it is good for Sierra Leone. To understand whether SEA would be useful in the context of Sierra Leone, the authors interviewed 64 out of 78 experts face to face from March to July 2019. In addition, government policies and regulatory documents on environmental management and sustainable development, published articles served as secondary sources of data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. These Sierra Leonean experts agreed that SEA would be useful for integration and achievement of improved sustainable urban planning strategies. However, the barriers identified to integrating SEA include: not addressing environmental issues during the preparation of policies and programs, insufficient political will, the absence of clear objectives, targets, principles and approaches, overlapping mandates among environmental institutions, and inadequate institutional coordination and non-integrated development framework as barriers to integrating SEA into their work. The study shows that SEA has the potential to have a positive impact on environmental concerns in decision-making, but it would need to be supported by stronger political will, legal frameworks, and improved technical guidance from the policy perspective. Moreover, we propose a conceptual framework for the inclusion of SEA into the urban planning process in Sierra Leone.

Abstract Purpose: It is known that the diagnosis of breast cancer often causes anxiety and depression. Radiotherapy of the breast as an obligatory part of a breast-conserving treatment concept can markedly increase these psychological symptoms in many, but not all patients. In this clinical observational study, we aimed at identifying cognitive, health-related and social factors that may either enhance or reduce the emergence of anxiety and depression. Methods: Using a longitudinal study design with 25 women (mean age: 52.9 years; SD = 10.6; age range 29-70 years) with a first diagnosis of nonmetastatic breast cancer, measures of anxiety, depression, situational emotional states, intelligence, and aspects of social frameworks were assessed before, during, and after radiotherapy of the breast. At 4 time-points, standard and self-constructed questionnaires were used to assess the course of anxiety and depressive symptoms across the radiotherapy intervention. Results: We found that anxiety is highest immediately before the start of radiation therapy, while the anxiety level was lowest on the day that therapy was completed. Anxiety and depression were enhanced in women with a lifetime history of chronic diseases at all time points of measurement. Moreover, women with high intelligence and low social support had stronger symptoms of depression than women with low intelligence and a stable family background at some time points of measurement. The degree of anxiety was neither related to intelligence nor to social support. Conclusion: For the first time, we demonstrate empirical pilot data on cognitive and social modulators of anxiety and depression in women with breast cancer over the course of radiotherapy. Our results may help to optimize clinical procedures and thereby reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in these patients.

Abstract The aptitude of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) for changing its surface proteins allows the pathogen to reduce the efficacy of antimicrobial agents, especially those targeting surface proteins. Although antibiotic treatment cannot be a solution for the eradication of avian mycoplasmosis, it can be considered a good option to minimize the number of deaths. One of the challenges of antibiotic treatments is the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among field isolates. Monitoring the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of field isolates can be a practical way of avoiding AMR. Thus, various tests have been developed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of field isolates. A modified broth microdilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test has been regularly used to measure the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of MG field isolates. Numerous studies have reported an increase in the number of antibiotic-resistant field isolates of MG. Therefore, this study presents a systematic review on antimicrobial MIC values of MG isolates to gather recent knowledge and investigate the prevalence and distribution of AMR among MG field isolates. A thorough search was conducted for related studies throughout 3 electronic databases. Altogether, 23 studies were identified as eligible studies and were used for further analysis. The results showed that enrofloxacin, oxytetracycline, and tylosin had the highest number of resistant isolates in most of the geographical distributions, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of these antibiotics need to be determined regularly to optimize treatment dosages.

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Centella asiatica leaf extract to TNF-α levels.
Methods: There were four treatment groups (each group consisted of five rats). Group I was given 0.5% Na CMC, group II was given Cefadroxil 45mg/kg WB, Group III C. asiatica leaf extract 100mg/kg BW, and group IV combination Cefadroxil and Centella leaf extract. Each group was given treatment twice for 12h a day for five days.
Results: TNF-α levels between groups did not significantly affect day three and differed significantly after day 6. On day 3, the control group had a higher TNF-α level of 25.13pg/ml than the group given antibiotics and C. asiatica. While when compared to the group given only C. asiatica leaf extract, the control group was more height of 17.1pg/ml. On the 6th day, this condition was changed. The most significant difference was found in the group given C. asiatica, in which the control group had higher levels of TNF-α 72.34pg/ml than the group receiving C. asiatica. Then, the control group is higher than 66.46pg/ml than those given antibiotics and C. asiatica.
Conclusion: C. asiatica leaf extract effectively reduces TNF both given alone and given along with antibiotics. It is potential to be explored into alternative and complementary treatments in mastitis cases with human trials.
