Abstract Sonochemical synthesis of sulphur doped ZnO (ZnO:S) nanorods and multipodes is reported. Formation of hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO is confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements. Electron microscopic studies show that the nanorods are grown along c-axis and formed multipode like superstructures in ZnO:S. Strong optical absorption bands in the region 300–800nm are observed for ZnO:S compared to ZnO. This ensures the application of ZnO:S nanopowders in sunscreens as UV blocking agents. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal two new bands at 439nm and 679nm for ZnO:S when excited with 354nm light. Enhanced and modified optical properties of ZnO:S nanorods are analysed in the light of sulphur occupying anion and interstitial sites.

Abstract Nanopowders of ZnO pure and doped with boron have been synthesized through sonochemical method using acetate of the material as starting reagent. The incorporation of boron has been confirmed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analysis. Continuous (CS) and pulsed (PS) mode syntheses have shown interesting structural and optical properties such as photoluminescence (PL) and ultra-violet (UV) absorption. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed broadening and shifting of peaks with boron incorporation in ZnO leading to size reduction in doped samples. The structure of the nanoparticles was found to be rod like and these rod like structure coalesce in boron doped ZnO. This has been explained on the basis of nucleation of octahedral units in the beginning leading it to tetrahedral structure. Electron microscopy has been used to explain these results. Definite peak shifts towards low wavelength side in absorption band and photoluminescence spectra have been observed for smaller particle size in pulsed mode powder. The blue shift due to particle size has been explained in the light of quantum confinement effect.

Abstract Sulphur doped ZnO nanopowders have been prepared by sonochemical method in continuous (CS) and pulsed (PS) modes. Precipitation time was found to vary with input power of applied ultrasound. X-ray diffraction studies show the formation hexagonal wurtzite phase of nano ZnO but variation in size, strain and lattice parameters was observed in the samples synthesized through CS and PS modes with different input power. Surface morphology of the samples changed significantly with input power of the pulse as observed from scanning electron microscopic results. Well defined and c-axis oriented nanorods and multipodes were observed with power setting of 187.5 W whereas in all other cases no definite morphology was observed. UV absorption studies show higher value of absorbance for ZnO:S. Further, the absorption band becomes sharp for the samples prepared with power setting of 225 W. PL spectra show several bands due to different transitions in the region of 400-780 nm which have been explained in the light of excitonic and defect induced transitions in ZnO.

Abstract ZnO powder doped with 0.84 at wt.% of silver has been synthesized through continuous and pulsed mode sonication method. The particle size was found to be 57(±1)nm and 44(±1)nm for continuous and pulsed mode powder, respectively. Contraction along 'c' axis has been observed for Ag doped powders. The surface area measured for pulsed mode powder was found to be twice that of continuous mode powder. Photoluminescence spectra of pulsed mode ZnO:Ag powder show new emission band at 608 nm. This has been attributed to silver atoms sitting on the surface of ZnO nano rods. Structure of the nano rods observed in both the samples was found to be different and this has been attributed to the presence of silver on the surface of the nano rods. The structural evolution during the process of sonication has been explained in the light of Ag ion reduction in the local high concentration region during ultrasonication.

Abstract Cerium doped ZnO nanopowders have been synthesized through soft solution route using ultrasound. Sonication has been found to be an effective way for doping rare earth ions like cerium into ZnO. Compositional analysis confirmed the presence of cerium in ZnO. Incorporation of Ce into ZnO leads to an increase in the unit cell volume. Further studies show the increase of crystallite size and unit cell volume with doping of cerium ions. Thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) decay studies give an idea of various trapping levels present in the band gap of ZnO. These traps release electrons during optical-stimulation to give bimolecular kinetics in nano ZnO:Ce powders. The decay constants are found to be depending upon the irradiation doses.

Abstract Grasslands are potential carbon sinks to reduce unprecedented increase in atmospheric CO2. Effect of age (1 to 4-yr-old) and management (slurry, grazing multispecies mixture) of a grass phase mixed crop rotation on carbon sequestration and emissions upon cultivation was compared with 17-yr-old grassland and a pea field as reference. Aboveground and root biomass were determined and soils were incubated to study CO2 emissions after soil disturbance. Aboveground biomass was highest in 1-yr-old grassland with slurry application and lowest in 4-yr-old grassland without slurry application. Root biomass was highest in 4-yr-old grassland, but all 1 to 4-yr-old grasslands were in between the pea field (0.81±0.094 g kg-1 soil) and the 17-yr-old grassland (3.17±0.22 g kg-1 soil). Grazed grasslands had significantly higher root biomass than cut grasslands. There was no significant difference in the CO2 emissions within 1 to 4-yr-old grasslands. Only the 17-yr-old grassland showed markedly higher CO2 emissions (4.9 ± 1.1 g CO2 kg-1 soil). Differences in aboveground and root biomass did not affect CO2 emissions, and slurry application did not either. The substantial increase in root biomass with age but indifference in CO2 emissions across the age and management in temporary grasslands, thus, indicates potential for long-term sequestration of soil C.
