Abstract The aim of this single-blinded, randomized controlled study was to determine the effectiveness of vapocoolant spray in reducing pain related to venipuncture in young, healthy male blood donors. The participants were separated into 2 groups by randomization. The donors in the control group (n = 44) were not given any intervention during the blood collection process. Vapocoolant spray was applied to the donors in the vapocoolant spray group (n = 44). The pain score was 1.90 ± 1.47 for the vapocoolant spray group and 3.23 ± 2.21 for the control group, and the difference between the groups was found to be statistically significant (P = .02). The study result showed that the use of vapocoolant spray for pain management is an effective method of reducing pain related to venipuncture during the process of blood donation in young male donors.

Abstract The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship of nurses' professional values and attitudes with their professional behaviors. The sample of the study included the nurses ( n = 235) at a hospital in Turkey. The results show that the importance given to professional values was high and that attitude toward the profession was positive; the importance given to professional values and positive attitude toward the profession increased in direct proportion to professional behaviors.

Abstract Aims and objectives: To investigate the effect of the self-administered superficial local hot and cold applications on pain, and the functional status and the quality of life in primary knee osteoarthritis patients.
Background: Superficial local hot and cold application is used as a nonpharmacological method for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. However, various guidelines for the management of knee osteoarthritis have conflicting recommendation for hot and cold therapy.
Design: A randomised clinical trial design.
Methods: The sample consisted of patients (n = 96) who were diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis. During the application stage, patients were designated to the hot and cold application groups and administered hot and cold application twice a day for 3 weeks together with standard osteoarthritis treatment. The control group only used standard osteoarthritis treatment. The data were collected with a Descriptive Information Form, a Pain Scale, the WOMAC Osteoarthritis Index, the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and a Patient Satisfaction Evaluation Form. Outcome measures included pain intensity, functional status and quality of life.
Results: We found decreased primary measurement pain scores and improved functional status scores and quality of life scores after the application programme compared to the pre-application stage in both the hot and cold application groups. Once the application was completed, the pain scores, functional status scores and quality-of-life scores on the second measurements were found to be still statistically lower than the pre-application scores but higher than the first measurement ([p < .001, χ
Conclusion: It was found that both hot and cold application resulted in a mild improvement in pain, functional status and quality of life, but this improvement was not sufficient to create a significant difference between the groups.
Relevance to clinical practice: This study contributes to the literature on hot and cold application methods as self-management strategies for patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract Subcutaneous heparin administration is routinely used for many patients in orthopaedic clinics. Nurses frequently encounter ecchymosis formation with heparin administration. Previous research indicates that the administration protocol may have effect on ecchymosis formation. The study was performed to determine and compare the effect of three different approaches of subcutaneous enoxaparin injection on ecchymosis formation in patients who underwent joint replacement surgery. Three protocols were compared: (1) injecting enoxaparin in 10 seconds, (2) injecting enoxaparin in 30 seconds, and (3) injecting enoxaparin in 30 seconds and waiting for an additional 10 seconds before withdrawing the needle. Ecchymosis formation was assessed in both size and frequency. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis analysis, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman rank correlation test were used to assess the data. The ecchymosis frequency was higher in the 10-second administration. Ecchymosis size was smaller when the enoxaparin was administered in 30 seconds and the needle was kept in the tissue for 10 seconds after injection. The enoxaparin should be administered in a longer duration (30 seconds). Keeping the needle in the tissue for 10 seconds may further decrease the size but not the incidence of ecchymosis.

Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the measurement values obtained with a non-contact infrared thermometer, a tympanic thermometer and a chemical dot thermometer. The research population was composed of students studying in two departments of a university in Ankara. A total of 452 students who fit the inclusion criteria of the study and volunteered to participate were included in the sample. Body temperature measurements with different thermometers were performed by the same researcher at the same room temperature. Data were analyzed in a computerized environment by SPSS 15.0 statistical program pack and Bland-Altman graph. Mean age of healthy young adults participating in the study was 19.66 ± 0.94, and 55.1% of them were female. The agreement limits for non-contact infrared and chemical dot was between -1.30 and 0.32°C; for non-contact infrared and tympanic was between -1.26 and 0.13°C; and for chemical dot and tympanic -0.89 and 0.74°C. It was determined that, although the measurement values of the tympanic membrane and chemical dot thermometers conformed with each other, the conformity of the non-contact infrared thermometer was weak.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Immobilization Comfort Questionnaire (ICQ).
Methods: The sample used in this methodological study consisted of 121 patients undergoing lower extremity arthroscopy in a training and research hospital. The validity study of the questionnaire assessed language validity, structural validity and criterion validity. Structural validity was evaluated via exploratory factor analysis. Criterion validity was evaluated by assessing the correlation between the visual analog scale (VAS) scores (i.e., the comfort and pain VAS scores) and the ICQ scores using Spearman's correlation test. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient and Bartlett's test of sphericity were used to determine the suitability of the data for factor analysis. Internal consistency was evaluated to determine reliability. The data were analyzed with SPSS version 15.00 for Windows. Descriptive statistics were presented as frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. A p value ≤ .05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: A moderate positive correlation was found between the ICQ scores and the VAS comfort scores; a moderate negative correlation was found between the ICQ and the VAS pain measures in the criterion validity analysis. Cronbach α values of .75 and .82 were found for the first and second measurements, respectively.
Conclusions: The findings of this study reveal that the ICQ is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the comfort of patients in Turkey who are immobilized because of lower extremity orthopedic problems.
