Abstract Objectives: The use of a biomaterial scaffold can improve the healing process of bone defects. Using radiologic and ultrasonographic methods, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of zeolite/collagen nanocomposite and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) bone scaffolds on the healing process of bone defect in rabbit femur. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight mature male New Zealand white rabbits were classified into four equal groups (n=7 in each). In the first group, the defect was made, and the wound was closed with no treatment; in the second group, the nHA was implanted into the defect; in the third group, the nanocomposite of zeolite/collagen was implanted; and in the fourth group, the defect was filled using autograft. Radiologic (Sedecal Veterinary X-Ray System, Model No. A6544-2) and ultrasonographic (Mindray Z5 Veterinary Ultrasound Scanner) examinations were done on days 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 postoperatively. Results: There were no healing effects on days 0 and 7 in any of the studied groups in the radiologic examination. The highest and lowest healing effects were related to treatment with zeolite/collagen nanocomposite and control group on day 60 after operation, respectively. There was no angiogenesis on day 0 in any group in the ultrasonographic examination. The highest and lowest levels of angiogenesis were related to rabbits treated with zeolite/collagen nanocomposite and the control group on day 30 after operation, respectively. Also, bone filling and angiogenesis in rabbits treated with zeolite/collagen nanocomposite were higher than other groups. Conclusions: Zeolite/collagen nanocomposite scaffolds bear a crucial capability in the reconstruction of bone defects and can be used in bone fractures.

Abstract Objectives: Patients with diabetes often suffer from chronic wounds which can occur due to the impairment of wound healing in these patients. Scientists have been trying to address this issue by using wide spectrum of antibiotics and drugs. However, overusing antibiotics in recent years has led to antibiotic resistant crisis; therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new approaches in order for controlling microbial infections in diabetic patients. This study aimed to determine if cold plasma was effective in wound healing in the infectious diabetic conditions. Material and Methods: In this experimental study, 40 adult male rats with diabetes infected with Staphylococcus aureus were included. The animals were randomly divided into two groups of 20 rats and four sub-groups (i.e., day 3rd, day 7th, day 14th, and day 21st). The rats in the treatment group were exposed to helium plasma irradiated for 3 minutes per day for 21 days. Wound healing in the samples was evaluated using five healing indexes including epithelium formation, Inflammatory cells, new vascularization, fibroblast, and collagen formation. Results: A significant difference (P<0.05) was found between the indexes in the plasma radiation group compared to the control group. The results showed that the speed of wound healing in the group treated with cold helium gas plasma was higher than that in the control group. Collagen formation was always completed faster in the helium plasma group, indicating the positive effects of helium plasma on infected diabetic wounds. Conclusions: Helium plasma was remarkable effective in healing wound and controlling infections in diabetic rats.

Abstract Varicocele is a pathological dilation of the venous network of the spermatic cord and considering that magnesium oxide nanoparticles play a key role in various physiological functions, the aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of nanoparticles on sperm characteristics affected by experimental varicocele. A total of 54 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 9 equal groups including healthy control group (untouched animals), sham-operated group (underwent sham surgery), three healthy experimental groups (animals in these groups received magnesium oxide nanoparticles at doses of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg/kg respectively by gavage for 6 weeks), varicocele control group (varicocele was induced by renal vein ligation) and three experimental varicocele groups (in addition to varicocele induction, magnesium oxide nanoparticles were given at doses of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg/kg respectively by gavage for 6 weeks). At the end of the 6th week, the abdomen was opened and semen samples were collected from the tail of the epididymis to determine the indices of concentration, survival and motility of sperm and the data were statistically analyzed (p<0.05). The results showed that magnesium oxide nanoparticles were able to significantly increase the concentration, viability, progressive, moderate and non-progressive movements of sperm compared to the varicocele group (p<0.001) and also caused a significant decrease (p<0.001) in the number of non-moving sperms in the varicocele experimental groups. Therefore, magnesium oxide nanoparticles may possibly reduce the destructive effects of varicocele due to their antioxidant activity and be effective in its treatment by improving sperm properties during varicocele.

Abstract Objectives: The aim of the current study was to assess the effects of hesperetin on damage to kidneys as remote organs following skeletal muscle ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in rats. Materials and Methods: In general, 30 male Wistar rats were randomized and placed into sham, IR, hesperetin, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and IR+hesperetin groups. The rats in the hesperetin and IR+hesperetin groups received a 50 mg/kg dose of hesperetin dissolved in DMSO intraperitoneally. In the IR+hesperetin group, hesperetin was injected exactly prior to reperfusion. To induce skeletal muscle ischemia, the femoral artery was clamped for two hours. Following a 24-hour period of reperfusion, the samples of blood were collected for renal function tests and oxidative stress measurements. Next, the rats were euthanized, and histological analyses were conducted on their removed kidneys. Results: Based on the results, urea and creatinine serum levels were significantly higher in the IR group (P<0.05) whereas they significantly reduced following treatment with hesperetin (P<0.05). The concentration of malondialdehyde (P<0.05) increased for the IR group while those of superoxide dismutase (P<0.05) and glutathione peroxidase (P<0.05) activities were lower than the other groups. The analysis of renal tissues in the IR group showed glomerular necrosis, degeneration, and necrosis of the tubular epithelium, protein casts, interstitial edema, and inflammation. Finally, the degree of renal injury was significantly ameliorated (P<0.05) in rats treated with hesperetin. Conclusions: Overall, the results indicated that in rats, hesperetin could reduce renal injury that has been induced through skeletal muscle IR.

Abstract Statement of the Problem: Alveolar bone resorption associated with periodontal disease is a common finding and generally irreversible. It impairs mastication and causes esthetic problems for patients. Bisphosphonates are the most commonly used antiresorptive agents for bone diseases. Purpose: Considering the risk of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, this study aimed to assess the effect of 2% risedronate gel on calvarial bone defects in rabbits. Materials and Method: In this animal study, critical-size defects of 8mm were created in the calvaria of 20 New Zealand white rabbits. In group 1 (n=10), 2% risedronate gel was applied into the right side defect while the left side defect remained empty and served as control. In group 2 (n=10), placebo gel was applied into the right side defect, while the left side defect remained empty and served as control. Five rabbits in each group were sacrificed at 1month and the remaining five at 2 month, post-operatively, and tissue samples were collected for histomorphometric analysis. Histomorphometric assessments included bone fill, degree of inflammation, number of osteoblasts, number of osteoclasts, and foreign body reaction at the site. Data were statistically analysed using SPSS version 25 via the Dunn test and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: No bone remodeling was noted in any group at 1 month. The risedronate group showed significantly higher bone fill than the other groups after 2 months (p= 0.016). At 2 months, the number of osteoblasts was significantly higher in the risedronate group (p< 0.05). The groups were not significantly different in terms of inflammation score at 1 (p= 0.31) or 2 (p=0.69) months. Foreign body reaction was not observed in any group at any time point. No osteoclast was detected in any group at any time point. Conclusion: Risedronate gel showed superior efficacy with regard to regeneration of rabbit calvarial bone defects compared to the placebo and control groups.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Induction of cholestasis is one of the methods of liver fibrosis which causes the development of oxidative stress, increased expression of fibrogenic markers, excessive deposition of extracellular matrix, and finally the incidence of fibrosis. Plantago ovata is known as a rich source of various secondary metabolites such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, trypanoids, and ascorbic acid. OBJECTIVES: the present study, the expression of TGF- β as a fibrotic marker and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) changes in cholestatic rats treated with P. ovata extract were evaluated. METHODS: In this study, 48 adult Wistar rats were used. The rats were randomly divided into eight groups of six animals each as follows: (1) healthy control group without bile duct ligation (BDL) surgery and treatment; (2–4) three healthy experimental plus P. ovata groups: rats without BDL, treated with P. ovata at dose levels of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight, respectively; (5) the BDL group: rats with BDL and treated with distilled water; and (6–8) the BDL plus P. ovata groups: rats with BDL and treated with P. ovata at dose levels of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight, respectively. The rats were treated with P. ovata extract for 45 consecutive days (once per day). After euthanasia and serum isolation, ALP enzyme level was measured. Moreover, the rat liver was fixed in 10% formalin buffer solution. The immunohistochemical study was performed by TGF-β antibody. Data analysis was performed using the One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test and the Prism statistical program (p <0.0001). RESULTS: The results showed a significant increase in the serum levels of ALP enzyme and TGF-β expression in BDL group. Treatment with P. ovata extract was able to significantly improve these changes in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that P. ovata extract probably due to its phenolic compounds and its antioxidant effect has a protective effect on the liver and subsequently improves the increased ...

Abstract Assessing the intraocular pressure is a key parameter for eye examinations used to diagnose diseases of this organ of the body. Determining the IOP requires a tool that is fast, accurate, portable, and functional. Currently, there are accepted methods for determining IOP, which include rebound tonometry and the Applentation method. This study aimed to determine the reference value for intraocular pressure by using rebound tonometry in the Caspian horse. In this regard, 20 apparently healthy Caspian miniature horses, both male and female aged between 2 and 14 years old and weighing between 150 and 200 kg were selected. The total mean and standard deviation of the results obtained from the study of intraocular pressure in 20 Caspian miniature horses were calculated as 32.9±6.7 mm/Hg. Gender had no significant effect on IOP (p < /em>>0.05). No significant differences were seen between the mean IOP values of the left eye compared to the right eye. Given the importance of early diagnosis of glaucoma and the prevention of subsequent disorders, it seems that the obtained results could be used as reference to measure the intraocular pressure of Caspian miniature horses.

Abstract Many researchers have been curious about the chemical sterilization method, which may be a choice of castration. The 20% calcium chloride ethanolic solution can prevent animals from some tumors and control the side effects of surgical castration. This experiment divided 12 male mixed-breed dogs into sham and chemical groups (n=6). Normal saline and 20% calcium chloride (20 ml/testis) were injected in the sham and chemical group's testis, respectively. Ultrasonography and related scoring were operated at 0-, 7-, 14-, and 2-days post-injection to evaluate echogenicity and measure the left testes' dimensions. Blood samples were taken on days 0, 7, 14, and 21 of the experiment evaluating the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and testosterone levels. The semen in the left epididymis of the chemical group was aspirated on day 21 post-injection for counting the sperm numbers. The testes of all dogs were surgically removed at 21 days post-injection, and the left one was put in formaldehyde for tissue processing. The intertubular edema, necrosis of the seminiferous tubules, neutrophil infiltration, and calcification was scored. The average dimensions of the chemical groups' left testes significantly decreased 7, 14, and 21 days after injection. The echogenicity of the testes decreased in the chemical group. A significant echogenicity difference was observed between the first day and the 7th and 14th day in ultrasonography. Calcium chloride injection failed to reduce the mean testosterone levels on all experimental days compared to day zero. Otherwise, the sperm number in the left testes of the chemical group decreased on day 21 post-injection. The degree of intertubular edema with neutrophil infiltration and severe tubular necrosis in the chemical group was significantly higher than in the sham group on the experimental days, including 7, 14, and 21. The mild calcification in the chemical group is likely the reason for higher echogenicity on day 21. The scrotum was swelled and ulcerated in the chemical group. Ultrasound is effective in demonstrating the castration ability of calcium chloride in the chemical method. Due to the inflammatory clinical effects, the chemical method is recommended in dogs only when surgical methods are unavailable.

Abstract Kisspeptin is a key component of reproduction that can directly affect food intake in mammals. There is evidence suggesting that melanocortin, GABA, corticotrophin, and neuropeptide Y (NPY), have a mediatory role in reward; however, how these substances interact with kisspeptin-induced by food intake in birds, remains to be identified. Accordingly, in this study, a total of 10 experiments were carried out to investigate the interplay between kisspeptin and these systems for the control of food intake in neonatal layer-type chickens. In the first experiment, chickens were intracerebroventricular (ICV) injected with saline and Metastin (Kisspeptin, 0.25, 50, and 1 nmol). In the second experiment, saline, Metastin (1 nmol), BIBP-3226 (NPY1 receptor antagonist, 1.25 nmol), and co-injection of Metastin + BIBP-3226 were injected. Experiments 3-10 were similar to experiment 1, except that chickens received BIIE 0246 (NPY2 receptor antagonist, 1.25 nmol), CGP71683A (NPY5 receptor antagonist, 50 μg), Picrotoxin (GABAA receptor antagonist, 1.25 nmol), CGP54626 (GABAB receptor antagonist, 21 µg), astressin-B (CRF1 / CRF2 receptor antagonist, 30 µg), Astressin2-B (CRF2 receptor antagonist, 30 µg), SHU9119 (MC3 / MC4 receptor antagonist, 0.5 nmol), and MCL0020 (MC3 / MC4 receptor antagonist, 0.5 nmol) instead of BIBP-3226. Food intake was subsequently assessed until 120 min after the injection. Based on the findings, Metastin (0.25, 50, and 1 nmol) significantly increased food intake in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). However, BIBP-3226 and Picrotoxin inhibited Metastin-induced hyperphagia in neonatal chickens (p < 0.05); Whereas, whereas BIIE 0246, CGP71683A, CGP54626, astressin-B, astressin2-B, SHU9119, and MCL0020 had no effect (p > 0.05). These results showed that the effect of kisspeptin on food intake might be mediated by NPY1 and GABAA receptors in layer-type chickens.

Abstract Abstract The present work introduces a good prospect for the development of hierarchical catalysts with excellent catalytic performance in the methanol to aromatic hydrocarbons conversion (MTA) process. Hierarchical H-ZSM5 zeolites, with a tailored pore size and different Si/Al ratios, were synthesized directly using natural kaolin clay as a low-cost silica and aluminium resource. Further explored for the direct synthesis of hierarchical HZSM-5 structures was the steam assisted conversion (SAC) with a cost-effective and green affordable saccharide source of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), as a secondary mesopore agent. The fabricated zeolites exhibiting good crystallinity, 2D and 3D nanostructures, high specific surface area, tailored pore size, and tunable acidity. Finally, the catalyst performance in the conversion of methanol to aromatic hydrocarbons was tested in a fixed bed reactor. The synthesized H-ZSM5 catalysts exhibited superior methanol conversion (over 100 h up to 90%) and selectivity (over 85%) in the methanol conversion to aromatic hydrocarbon products.
