    Abstract Conceived as a general introduction to the book, this chapter is a reminder of the core concepts of genetic mapping and molecular marker-based prediction. It provides an overview of the principles and the evolution of methods for mapping the variation of complex traits, and methods for QTL-based prediction of human disease risk and animal and plant breeding value. The principles of linkage-based and linkage disequilibrium-based QTL mapping methods are described in the context of the simplest, single-marker, methods. Methodological evolutions are analysed in relation with their ability to account for the complexity of the genotype-phenotype relations. Main characteristics of the genetic architecture of complex traits, drawn from QTL mapping works using large populations of unrelated individuals, are presented. Methods combining marker-QTL association data into polygenic risk score that captures part of an individual's susceptibility to complex diseases are reviewed. Principles of best linear mixed model-based prediction of breeding value in animal- and plant-breeding programs using phenotypic and pedigree data, are summarized and methods for moving from BLUP to marker-QTL BLUP are presented. Factors influencing the additional genetic progress achieved by using molecular data and rules for their optimization are discussed.

    Abstract Non-albuminuric diabetic kidney disease (NA-DKD) is characterized by progressive loss of kidney function with an annual loss of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) more than 3 mL/ min/ 1.73m2 per year. NA-DKD is also associated with the late manifestation of diabetic kidney disease, characterized by reduced eGFR (< 60 mL/min/ 1.73m2), in the absence of albuminuria (urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio [UACR] less than 30 mg/g. The typical glomerular changes seen in diabetic nephropathy are less frequently observed in normoalbuminuric patients, while they predominantly show mesangial expansion and tubulointerstitial and vascular changes. The prevalence of NA-DKD has been increasing during the past decade, with a wide range of prevalence in different studies. It seems that patients with NA-DKD are more likely to be female and have better metabolic profile including a lower Hb A1c, lower triglyceride, lower cholesterol, lower BMI and systolic blood pressure, and lower rate of retinopathy. Compared to patients with albuminuria, those with NA-DKD show a lower risk for progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), or rapid decline in eGFR. They also have increased risks of death and hospitalization for heart failure compared with non-DKD diabetic patients, but a lower risk in comparison with albuminuric DKD, regardless of GFR. There is no effective treatment for this phenotype of the disease, but limited data support the use of SGLT2 inhibitors to slow chronic kidney disease progression along with appropriate metabolic risk factor control. More clinical research and pathologic studies are needed for a better understanding of the phenotype, prevention, and treatment methods of the disease.  DOI: 10.52547/ijkd.7966.

    Abstract The O-D stretch fundamental region of the deuterated water dimer, (D2O)2, is further studied using a pulsed supersonic slit jet and a tunable optical parametric oscillator infrared source. The previously unobserved acceptor symmetric O-D stretch fundamental vibration is detected, with Ka = 0 ← 0 and 1 ← 0 sub-bands at about 2669 and 2674 cm-1, respectively. The analysis indicates that the various water dimer tunneling splittings generally decrease in the excited vibrational state, similar to the three other previously observed O-D stretch fundamentals. Two new (D2O)2 combination bands are observed, giving information on intermolecular vibrations in the excited O-D stretch states. The likely vibrational assignments for these and a previously observed combination band are discussed.

    Abstract Aortic stenosis (AS) is characterized by restricted motion and calcification of the aortic valve and is the deadliest valvular cardiac disease. Assessment of AS severity is typically done by expert cardiologists using Doppler measurements of valvular flow from echocardiography. However, this limits the assessment of AS to hospitals staffed with experts to provide comprehensive echocardiography service. As accurate Doppler acquisition requires significant clinical training, in this paper, we present a deep learning framework to determine the feasibility of AS detection and severity classification based only on two-dimensional echocardiographic data. We demonstrate that our proposed spatio-temporal architecture effectively and efficiently combines both anatomical features and motion of the aortic valve for AS severity classification. Our model can process cardiac echo cine series of varying length and can identify, without explicit supervision, the frames that are most informative towards the AS diagnosis. We present an empirical study on how the model learns phases of the heart cycle without any supervision and frame-level annotations. Our architecture outperforms state-of-the-art results on a private and a public dataset, achieving 95.2% and 91.5% in AS detection, and 78.1% and 83.8% in AS severity classification on the private and public datasets, respectively. Notably, due to the lack of a large public video dataset for AS, we made slight adjustments to our architecture for the public dataset. Furthermore, our method addresses common problems in training deep networks with clinical ultrasound data, such as a low signal-to-noise ratio and frequently uninformative frames.     Abstract Introduction and importance: We present the case of a 17 years old girl with per rectal haemorrhage secondary to pelvic arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and potentially haemorrhoids. Pelvic AVMs are rare and extremely variable in their clinical presentation, size and location and pose a therapeutic challenge. Focus has turned towards interventional radiological procedures with angioembolisation as the main treatment form for pelvic AVMs.
    Case presentation: A 17 years old girl presented to a rural hospital with significant per rectal bleeding requiring transfer to a tertiary centre with interventional radiology capabilities. Diagnostic imaging determined the presence of a pelvic AVM as well as haemorrhoid. She had no prior history of haemorrhoids, per rectal bleeding or per vaginal bleeding. Further diagnostic imaging including a digital subtraction angiography and MRI pelvis was performed and her case was discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting where the decision was made for angioembolisation of a large right rectal AVM as well as precautionary banding of haemorrhoids that had developed secondary to outflow obstruction. A repeat CT mesenteric angiogram a month later demonstrated diminished appearances of the rectal AVM.
    Clinical discussion: Pelvic AVMs are a rare entity and are not a common cause for per rectal bleeding. There is currently no direct consensus on the optimum management of complex pelvic AVMs particularly those that present with a second pathology such as haemorrhoids. Surgical management often results in recurrence or rapid progression of the AVM lesion and recruitment of new blood supply further complicates the problem. Selective embolisation allows for control of haemorrhage and utilises chemical agents as well as detachable coils and balloons. However, postoperative pain and swelling can still be expected and multiple transcatheter embolisations may be required.
    Conclusion: The treatment of symptomatic pelvic AVMs is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach with careful radiological planning prior to embolisation. Angioembolisation is becoming increasingly prevalent and multiple embolisation procedures may be required to reach the desired therapeutic effect.

    Abstract Natural diversity has been extensively used to understand plant biology and improve crops. However, studies were commonly based on visual phenotypes or on a few measurable parameters. Nowadays, a large number of parameters can be measured thanks to next generation sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics thus providing an unprecedented resolution in the detection of natural diversity. This enhanced resolution offers new possibilities in terms of understanding plant biology. Technology advances also contribute to a better assessment of the biodiversity loss currently taking place. Hence, the topic presents an overview on efforts for maintaining biological diversity in crops, on possibilities offered by recent technologies in the assessment of natural variation, and ends with examples of the diversity found even at the cellular level

    Abstract The widespread prevalence of using chemical substances such as fertilizers and pesticides in garden threatens the health of horticulturists. This study aimed to investigate the underlying elements of protective behavior of horticulturists from psychological aspects. The health Belief Model is the theoretical basis of this study and moderating the role of locus of control is explored over the model. The target population of study was horticulturists of Zanjan County, Iran. A questionnaire was distributed among a random sample of 293, who were selected using multi stage stratified sampling. The study results revealed that all elements of the proposed theory significantly influence the protective behavior. Furthermore, the study results confirmed the moderating effects of locus of control on the path relation between perceived profit and cues to action with protective behavior. The suggestions to improve protective behavior for individual with internal and external locus of control are presented.
