    Abstract Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-breathing disorder that highly reduces the quality of human life. The most powerful method for the detection and classification of sleep apnea is the Polysomnogram. However, this method is time-consuming and cost-inefficient. Therefore, several methods focus on using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals to detect sleep apnea. This paper proposed a novel automated approach to detect and classify apneic events from single-lead ECG signals. Wavelet Scattering Transformation (WST) was applied to the ECG signals to decompose the signal into smaller segments. Then, a set of features, including higher-order statistics and entropy-based features, was extracted from the WST coefficients to formulate a search space. The obtained features were fed to a random forest classifier to classify the ECG segments. The experiment was validated using the 10-fold and hold-out cross-validation methods, which resulted in an accuracy of 91.65% and 90.35%, respectively. The findings were compared with different classifiers to show the significance of the proposed approach. The proposed approach achieved better performance measures than most of the existing methodologies.

    Abstract Metabolic switches are a crucial hallmark of cellular development and regeneration. In response to changes in their environment or physiological state, cells undergo coordinated metabolic switching that is necessary to execute biosynthetic demands of growth and repair. In this Review, we discuss how metabolic switches represent an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that orchestrates tissue development and regeneration, allowing cells to adapt rapidly to changing conditions during development and postnatally. We further explore the dynamic interplay between metabolism and how it is not only an output, but also a driver of cellular functions, such as cell proliferation and maturation. Finally, we underscore the epigenetic and cellular mechanisms by which metabolic switches mediate biosynthetic needs during development and regeneration, and how understanding these mechanisms is important for advancing our knowledge of tissue development and devising new strategies to promote tissue regeneration.

    Abstract Background: Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death worldwide. In Saudi Arabia and the gulf area, coronary artery disease (CAD) is considered a serious problem with high mortality. Previous studies identified multiple risk factors, that include hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, smoking, and low physical activity, which might be related to lifestyle changes over the last few decades. Limited data about gender differences in clinical and angiographic characteristics among CAD patients in the Jazan region are available. The aim of this study is to assess potential gender differences in CAD and its clinical characteristics and angiographic features in the Jazan region.
    Methods: This retrospective chart review collected data between January 2020 and March 2021 from the follow-ups of 498 patients (100 females and 398 males) aged over 18 years at the Prince Mohammed bin Nasser Hospital in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. The data were collected after all patients admitted to the hospital were reviewed, and cardiac catheterization was performed.
    Results: Of the 498 patients with CAD, 100 (20.1%) were female and 398 (79.9%) were male. The mean age of female patients (59.44 years) was significantly higher than that of male patients (55.1 years; P=0.0002). In addition, risk factors differed significantly between genders (P=0.0210). Moreover, vessels differed significantly between genders (P=0.0002). Coronary angiogram findings showed significant correlations between gender and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI; P=0.0001) and MEDICAL (P=0.0010). Diagnosis findings showed significant gender differences in STEMI (P<0.0010) and unstable angina (P<0.0010).
    Conclusions: CAD severity did not differ by gender, but coronary angiogram findings showed significant relationships between gender, PCI, and MEDICAL treatment with CAD.

    Abstract Introduction: Vascular access surgery (VAS) involves the creation and maintenance of arteriovenous access to facilitate haemodialysis. The prevalence of haemodialysis is rising despite increases in kidney transplants on a yearly basis. There is currently only one access surgery fellowship accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. We aimed to establish the experience and perceived competence in access surgery of senior vascular surgery trainees.
    Methods: A short questionnaire (SurveyMonkey) was used to survey all senior (ST6-ST8) vascular surgery trainees in Health Education England (HEE) vascular surgery training programmes. The short survey asked trainees to report their: (1) training grade; (2) training deanery; (3) experience of access surgery; and (4) whether senior trainees thought they would be able to independently undertake primary access surgery post-completion of training (post Certificate of Completion of Training). The survey was circulated via HEE deaneries and the vascular surgery trainees' society: the Rouleaux Club.
    Results: Twenty-eight senior (ST6-ST8) vascular surgery trainees responded to the survey: 29.6% were ST6 level, 33.3% were ST7 and 37.1% were ST8. Deanery respondence was evenly spread, although London was overrepresented (37.1%). In total, 28.6% had been involved in fewer than 10 cases, 35.7% in 10-25 cases, and 35.7% in more than 25 cases. Almost 54% of senior vascular surgery trainees believed they would not be able to undertake independent access surgery once they had completed training.
    Conclusions: Competence in access surgery is an increasing requirement of a consultant vascular surgeon. More formalised training is required to adequately train the next generation of vascular surgeons.
