Abstract 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furfurylamine (HMFA), as an important 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) derivative, has many potential applications in the preparation of diuretics, antihypertensive drugs, preservatives, and curing agents. In this work, highly efficient valorization of biomass-derived d-fructose into HMFA was attempted via a cascade reaction in a three-constituent deep eutectic solvent (3c-DES)–H₂O. Using d-fructose (63.0 g/L) as a raw material, the yield of 5-HMF reached 68.2% in 3c-DES malic acid/glycerol/betaine–H₂O (9:91, wt/wt) (pH 2.3) at 170 °C in 30 min. Whole cells of Escherichia coli CV harboring transaminase were utilized to valorize biomass-derived 5-HMF to HMFA at pH 8.0 and 30 °C using amine donor l-alanine. The valorization of 600 mM commercial 5-HMF gave a 93.2% yield of HMFA with 99.2% selectivity. In addition, CV cells transformed d-fructose-valorized 5-HMF into HMFA in 94.1% yield in 3c-DES malic acid/glycerol/betaine–H₂O. This approach provided a sustainable and eco-efficient idea for chemoenzymatically valorizing biomass-derived d-fructose to HMFA.

Abstract Biobased chemical furfuryl alcohol is an important furfural-upgrading compound, which is mainly used to prepare fruit acids, resins, additives, polymers, fibers, and rocket fuels. In this study, one sustainable way for valorisation of biomass into furfuryl alcohol was developed via chemoenzymatic conversion in one-pot manner. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) CA:Betaine was prepared by mixing betaine and citric acid (CA). Using CA:Betaine (10 wt%) as catalyst and reaction medium, the carbohydrates (glucan plus xylan) in corncob (60 g/L) were firstly catalyzed to produce 74.6 mM furfural, 96.5 mM formic acid and 40.3 mM glucose at 170 °C for 30 min in CA:Betaine-water (10:90, wt:wt). Furthermore, co-expression of formate dehydrogenase (FDH) and NADPH-dependent aldehyde reductase (SsCR) from Sporidiobolus salmonicolor in one E. coli was a good strategy for the efficient biosynthesis of furfuryl alcohol. Within 2 h, E. coli SF21 efficiently converted corncob-derived furfural (74.6 mM) to furfuryl alcohol in a yield of 95.8 % by using corncob-derived formate and glucose as co-substrates. The furfuryl alcohol productivity was obtained at 0.117 g furfuryl alcohol/g corncob (0.343 g furfuryl alcohol/g xylan). Overall, this study provided a novel chemoenzymatic strategy for catalysis of biomass into furfuryl alcohol in CA:Betaine-water.

Abstract Recently, metal phosphides have attracted considerable attention as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this work, FeP nanotube arrays have been successfully synthesized on carbon cloth using ZnO nanorod arrays as the sacrificial templets, via a phosphidation process. The dimensions of the FeP nanotubes are characterized using SEM and TEM showing the diameter to be approximately 200 nm and with a wall thickness of 50-100 nm. The tubular structure of FeP nanotubes provides a facile ion pathway and reduced inner inactive material, thus they are favorable for supercapacitor applications. As a result, the as-synthesized FeP nanotube arrays deliver an improved specific capacitance of 149.11 F g

Abstract The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(5)H(7)N(5) (2+)·2C(7)H(7)O(3)S(-)·H(2)O, consists of one diprotonated adeninium cation, two p-toluene-sulfonic acid anions and one water mol-ecule. In the crystal, the cations and anions are connected through N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds forming R(2) (2)(8) and R(2) (2)(9) graph-set motifs. The solvent water mol-ecule links cations and anions through O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating a two-dimensional layer parallel to (10).
