Abstract Background: Bone Marrow examination is considered to be the most indispensable diagnostic tool for the evaluation of many neoplastic and non-neoplastic haematological disorders. After an initial assessment of suspicious cases on abnormal laboratory parameters along with the clinical presentation of the patient marrow examination is finally required for diagnosis as well as management of many haematological malignancies as it offers a clear cytological as well as histological picture of Bone Marrow aspirate and biopsy respectively. The Objective was to evaluate the significance of Bone Marrow examination in patients with abnormal haematological parameters.
Methods: A retrospective study conducted at the Pathology Department of Pak Emirates Military Hospital from (Jan-June 2022) On data from150 patients who were advised to undergo bone marrow examination due to abnormal lab parameters and peripheral smear findings after informed consent and approval from the ethics review committee, to find out the correlation of abnormal haematological parameters and aspirate findings which have led to a definitive diagnosis. Data comprising basic demographic variables (age, gender etc.), Abnormal Haematological Parameters (CBC), peripheral smear findings and Aspirate findings were analyzed using SPSS version 23.0.
Results: Out of 150 studied participants with abnormal haematological parameters 24 (16%) were diagnosed on bone marrow examination as acute leukaemia / Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma respectively, 13 (9%) cases of aplastic anaemia and Autoimmune HaemolyticAnaemia, 33 (22%)cases of hypersplenism, CML and multiple myeloma. While 22 (15%) cases were diagnosed with BME as CKD and reactive changes. Moreover, 22(15%) cases were found to have Iron Deficiency anaemia respectively.
Conclusions: The study revealed that patients with abnormal haematological parameters should undergo bone marrow examination to ascertain the diagnosis for malignant as well as non-malignant conditions that could cause abnormal lab parameters.

Abstract High-entropy alloys (HEA) with superior biocompatibility, high pitting resistance, minimal debris accumulation, and reduced release of metallic ions into surrounding tissues are potential replacements for traditional metallic bio-implants. A novel equiatomic HEA based on biocompatible metals, CrMoNbTiZr, was consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The relative sintered density of the alloy was about 97% of the theoretical density, indicating the suitability of the SPS technique to produce relatively dense material. The microstructure of the sintered HEA consisted of a BCC matrix and Laves phase, corresponding to the prediction of the thermodynamic CALPHAD simulation. The HEA exhibited a global Vickers microhardness of 531.5 ± 99.7 HV, while the individual BCC and Laves phases had hardness values of 364.6 ± 99.4 and 641.8 ± 63.0 HV, respectively. Its ultimate compressive and compressive yield strengths were 1235.7 ± 42.8 MPa and 1110.8 ± 78.6 MPa, respectively. The elasticity modulus of 34.9 ± 2.9 GPa of the HEA alloy was well within the range of cortical bone and significantly lower than the values reported for commonly used biomaterials made from Ti-based and Cr-Co-based alloys. In addition, the alloy exhibited good resistance to bio-corrosion in PBS and Hanks solutions. The CrMoNbTiZr HEA exhibited an average COF of 0.43 ± 0.06, characterized mainly by abrasive and adhesive wear mechanisms. The CrMoNbTiZr alloy's mechanical, bio-corrosion, and wear resistance properties developed in this study showed a good propensity for application as a biomaterial.

Abstract Biodegradable metals are being investigated as temporary implants that dissolve safely in the body after bone regeneration. Zinc (Zn) has an intermediate biodegradation rate between magnesium and stainless steels, yet its degradation rate is too slow to function as a temporary orthopedic implant. Alloying with nutrient elements is considered a strategy to tune its mechanical properties and in vivo biodegradability. Zn/calcium (Zn/Ca) alloys (with 0.5, 1, and 2 wt% Ca) were processed by spark plasma sintering and their microstructure, mechanical, and biodegradation properties were investigated. Ca was distributed in the grain boundary regions of Zn due to its low miscibility in Zn. Furthermore, the corrosion rates of Zn/Ca alloys determined from linear polarization measurements (0.164-0.325 mm/yr) accelerated by at least 10% compared with pure sintered Zn (0.149 mm/yr) with simultaneous dissolution of Zn and Ca, as verified from X-ray diffraction analysis of the corrosion products. The alloy specimens exhibited hardness (52-58 HV) and compressive strength (93-119 MPa) comparable with those of human cortical and cancellous bones (49 HV; 90-209 MPa). This study demonstrated the tunability of the mechanical and biodegradation properties of Zn-based materials by alloying them with a nutrient element for potential application as temporary orthopedic implants.

Abstract Population growth in recent years has led to increased wastewater production and pollution of water resources. This situation also heavily affects Bolivia, so wastewater treatment methods and materials suitable for Bolivian society should be explored. This study investigated the natural Bolivian Zeolite (BZ) and its NaCl-modified structure (NaBZ) as adsorbents for cadmium removal from water. The natural BZ and the modified form NaBZ were investigated by different physicochemical characterization techniques. Furthermore, XPS and FT-IR techniques were used to investigate the adsorption mechanisms. The cadmium adsorption on BZ and NaBZ was analyzed using various mathematical models, and the Langmuir model provided a better description of the experimental adsorption data with cadmium adsorption capacities of 20.2 and 25.6 mg/g for BZ and NaBZ, respectively. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second order kinetics. The effect of different parameters, such as initial cadmium concentration and pH on the adsorption was studied. In addition, the results of the regeneration test indicated that both BZ and NaBZ can be regenerated by using hydrochloric acid (HCl). Finally, the adsorption experiment of BZ and NaBZ on a real water sample (brine from Salar de Uyuni salt flat) containing a mixture of different heavy metals was carried out. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the effectiveness of natural BZ and modified NaBZ in the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

Abstract Biofilm mediated infections have major clinical impact. Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen that frequently causes biofilm forming infections, such as those associated with medical devices and persistent wounds. Microorganisms embedded in biofilm are impervious to antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents, thus they are difficult to eliminate. The upsurge of multi-drug resistant strains makes treating such illnesses even more difficult. Therefore, new strategies are required to combat such type of infections. In this work, we have proposed an alternative therapeutic option to eradicate preformed biofilm of vancomycin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) and enhanced phagocytosis by neutrophils in fresh human blood using curcumin mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT).At sub-MIC of curcumin, different anti-biofilm assays and microscopic examinations were performed, followed by 20 J/cm

Abstract The possibility of exploiting the enormous potential of graphene for microelectronics and photonics must go through the optimization of the graphene-metal contact. Achieving low contact resistance is essential for the consideration of graphene as a candidate material for electronic and photonic devices. This work has been carried out in an 8'' wafer pilot-line for the integration of graphene into a CMOS environment. The main focus is to study the impact of the patterning of graphene and passivation on metal-graphene contact resistance. The latter is measured by means of transmission line measurement (TLM) with several contact designs. The presented approaches enable reproducible formation of contact resistivity as low as 660 Ω μm with a sheet resistance of 1.8 kΩ/□ by proper graphene patterning, passivation of the channel and a post-processing treatment such as annealing.
