Abstract Molecular quantum mechanical modeling, accelerated by machine learning, has opened the door to high-throughput screening campaigns of complex properties, such as the activation energies of chemical reactions and absorption/emission spectra of materials and molecules; in silico. Here, we present an overview of the main principles, concepts, and design considerations involved in such hybrid computational quantum chemistry/machine learning screening workflows, with a special emphasis on some recent examples of their successful application. We end with a brief outlook of further advances that will benefit the field.

Abstract The prevalence of psychiatric disorders in people with Intellectual Disability (ID) is statistically higher than in the general population. There is a lack of consensus on the role that epilepsy plays in psychiatric disorders in people with ID. We carried out a systematic review of articles published between 1960 and 2022, focusing on high-quality, case-control original research studies that only included adult populations. The primary outcome was the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in people with intellectual disability with and without epilepsy. Six articles were finally included. Results were varied; some reported a statistical increase, whereas others did not find any statistical difference. Due to the current controversy on the role of epilepsy in psychiatric disorders in people with ID and the small number of publications on the topic, we cannot affirm a relationship between epilepsy and psychiatric disorders in people with ID.

Abstract Background: Due to the health emergency of COVID-19, telemedicine has become more relevant. Remote monitoring conspicuous as a valuable tool for the clinical follow-up of kidney patients, in this case, who are treated with automated peritoneal dialysis. This study aims to describe the use of remote monitoring as a surveillance method in a cohort of patients on automated peritoneal dialysis prevent complications and COVID-19 contagion. Methods: Study of a cohort of patients who initially participated in a randomized block clinical trial in which the use of Automated Peritoneal Dialysis with Remote Monitoring (APD-RM) was compared with conventional treatment. A descriptive analysis was performed of the rates of infection by COVID-19, the time of incidence until this, mortality, and rates of transfer to hemodialysis. In addition, survival was measured by survival curves. Results: Of the 509 patients, 19 were positive for COVID-19 (incidence rate of 7.0 episodes/100 patient-year), and only six patients recovered from the infection; the death rate was 2.6 % compared to all-cause death of 9.8 %. The most affected group of patients were those over 50 years old, with 71.4 % mortality, in contrast to younger patients infected, with a mortality of 60 %. During the follow-up period, 21 patients were transferred to HD: six due to peritonitis, five due to UF failure, seven due to catheter dysfunction, one due to uremic syndrome, one due to COVID-19, and one by surgical intervention. Conclusion: APD-RM patients have a significant advantage over other dialysis therapies because the use of telemedicine not only provides continuity in the patient's clinical treatment but also favors the prevention of COVID-19 infection, the management and prevention of complications inherent to therapy and the preservation of the life of Peritoneal Dialysis patients.

Abstract Vaccination against PCV2 has been proven to be an effective measure to reduce the severity of TB in wild boar. The combination of this measure with strategies focused on treating other key concomitant pathogens, such as nematodes, could be a useful strategy. This study assesses whether a combination of deworming treatments and PCV2 vaccination may reduce the prevalence and severity of TB in wild boar. The study was conducted on five game estates in mid-western Spain where four groups of wild boar were produced: control, vaccinated, dewormed and vaccinated-dewormed. Wild boars from all groups were hunted between 2017 and 2020, and all of them received a TB diagnosis based on pathological and microbiological tests. Generalised linear models were used to explore the effect of deworming and PCV2 vaccination on TB prevalence and severity. PCV2-vaccinated animals showed lower probabilities of suffering severe TB lesions. However, no differences regarding TB severity were found between dewormed and non-dewormed wild boar. PCV2 vaccination reduces TB severity in wild boar. However, annual deworming does not produce a long-term parasitological reduction that can influence the development of TB in wild boar, nor does it improve the effect of PCV2 vaccination on TB.

Abstract We mathematically model the demographic dynamics of biological populations with sexual reproduction where mating and reproduction can be influenced by the current number of couples in the population. We assume the more realistic situation where the reproduction process occurs in a non-predictable environment. We also consider the immigration/emigration of couples in the population. In this work, we continue the research about the class of two-sex models introduced in Ma et al. (2016) where the offspring distribution changes over time in a random environment influenced by the number of progenitor couples in the population. By considering the more general non-parametric statistical setting, we study several inferential problems of ecological interest. As illustration, we present an application to Pacific salmon populations.

Abstract Peritoneal dialysis (PD) modalities affect solute removal differently. However, the impacts of switching PD modalities on serum levels of biomarkers of different sizes are not known. Our objective was to analyze whether a change in the PD modality associates with the levels of two routine biochemical laboratories. In this multicentric prospective cohort study. we selected all patients who remained on a PD modality for at least 6 months and switched PD modality. Patients were also required to be treated with the same PD modality for at least 3 months before and after the modality change. The primary outcome was change in potassium and phosphate serum levels. We identified 737 eligible patients who switched their PD modality during the study. We found mean serum phosphate levels increased during the 3 months after switching from CAPD to APD and conversely decreased after switching to from APD to CAPD. In contrast, for potassium the difference in the mean serum levels was comparable between groups switching from CAPD to APD, and vice versa. In conclusion, CAPD seems to be as efficient as APD for the control of potassium serum levels, but more effective for the control of phosphate serum levels. The effect of a higher removal of middle size molecules as result of PD modalities in terms of clinical and patient-reported outcomes should be further explored.

Abstract Background: Cardiovascular complications are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). One such complication is pulmonary hypertension (PH). Its prevalence in patients in peritoneal dialysis (PD) varies from 12.6-41.7% and its related factors are not well known. The main objective of this multicenter study was to determine the prevalence of PH and its risk factors in patients starting in PD.
Methods: Patients incident in PD were studied. Clinical, biochemical, and PD parameters were evaluated. A transthoracic echocardiography was performed and the evaluated according to the American Society of Echocardiography. Systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) was calculated with tricuspid regurgitation gradient and PH considered if pulmonary artery pressure was ≥35 mmHg.
Results: There were 105 men and 72 women included in the study (aged 53.7 ± 12.8 vs. 52.9 ± 15.5 years). PH was found in 69 patients (38.98%), they had sPAP of 49.05 ± 13.80 vs. 18.81 ± 11.15 mmg, in patients without PH (p <0.001). Patients with PH tend to be more frequently men than women (42 vs. 35%, p = 0.33), and were younger (51.0 ± 14.9 vs. 55,1 ± 12.8 years; p = 0.05). Risk factor for PH were diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle (LV) (OR = 1.46, 95% CI 1.094-1.973), left ventricular hypertrophy (LVF) (OR = 2.56, 95% CI 1.29-5.09); and residual renal function (RRF) was a protector factor (OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.068-0.915).
Conclusions: Prevalence of PH in patient's incident in PD was 38%. The factors associated with PH were diastolic dysfunction of the LV and LV hypertrophy. RRF was a protector factor.
