Abstract Quorum sensing is a communication system among bacteria to sense the proper time to express their virulence factors. Quorum sensing inhibition is a therapeutic strategy to block bacterial mechanisms of virulence. The aim of this study was to synthesize and evaluate new bioisosteres of N -acyl homoserine lactones as Quorum sensing inhibitors in Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 by quantifying the specific production of violacein. Five series of compounds with different heterocyclic scaffolds were synthesized in good yields: thiazoles, 16a – c , thiazolines 17a – c , benzimidazoles 18a – c , pyridines 19a – c and imidazolines 32a – c . All 15 compounds showed activity as Quorum sensing inhibitors except 16a . Compounds 16b , 17a – c , 18a , 18c , 19c and 32b exhibited activity at concentrations of 10 µM and 100 µM, highlighting the activity of benzimidazole 18a (IC 50 = 36.67 µM) and 32b (IC 50 = 85.03 µM). Pyridine 19c displayed the best quorum sensing inhibition activity (IC 50 = 9.66 µM). Molecular docking simulations were conducted for all test compounds on the Chromobacterium violaceum CviR protein to gain insight into the process of quorum sensing inhibition. The in-silico data reveal that all 15 the compounds have higher affinity for the protein than the native AHL ligand ( 1 ). A strong correlation was found between the theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract AIM: Statistical and ecological mechanisms shape species abundance distributions (SADs). A lack of correlation between ecological gradients and SAD shape would suggest that SADs are caused by purely statistical reasons. We evaluated the variation in the shape of SADs for communities in landscapes of differing variable connectivity, environmental heterogeneity, species niches overlap and productivity. LOCATION: Rainforests in the Madidi region (Bolivia). METHODS: We compiled biological and environmental information on 65 sites (a site being a group of two to six 0.1‐ha plots where woody plants of a diameter at breast height ≥ 2.5 cm were inventoried). We built unveiled (complete) SADs for each site and fitted Gambin models to those SADs. The Gambin α parameter served as a metric of SAD shape. Low α values characterize logseries‐like SADs, while high α values characterize lognormal‐like SADs. For each site, we estimated landscape roughness, environmental heterogeneity, species niche overlap and productivity. These variables were related to SAD shape by means of variation partitioning. RESULTS: SADs changed from logseries‐like to lognormal‐like along the elevational gradient. Many of our predictor variables were correlated: 40.4% of the variation in SAD shape could not be attributed to specific factors. However, 50.62% of the variation in the SAD shape could be assigned to individual predictor matrices: 28.4% was explained exclusively by niche overlap, 15.41% exclusively by environmental heterogeneity, 5.20% exclusively by landscape roughness and 1.6% exclusively by productivity. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Ecological processes related to the topographical/environmental complexities that vary across the elevational gradient are correlated with the SAD shape. Purely statistical mechanisms are apparently not sufficient to explain the changes in SAD shape. The most important factor is the mean overlap of the niches of the species of an assemblage: avoiding competition with co‐occurring species could be the most important mechanism driving species relative success at the ≤100 km² scale.

Diffuse tropical primary pyomyositis is an infrequent entity in our country, with few cases associated to communityacquired Methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus. There are no reported cases of Community-Acquired Methicillin- Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA- MRSA) in Peru. We present the case of a 70 year old male with a previous diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus, receiving irregular treatment, who was admitted to the hospital with a history of 10 days of low back pain radiating to the left leg, fever and forced flexion of the right hip due to pain during movement. The diagnosis of diffuse pyomyositis of both psoas muscles was performed with MRI and culture of a posterior paravertebral collection, from which Staphylococcus aureus resistant to oxacillin, penicillin and dicloxacillin was isolated.

Abstract In Mexico and in the world, the incorporation of the scientific community (among them ecologists) to the generation of knowledge that contributes to solving the serious environmental problems, and advancing towards the sustainability, requires a different research vision. Moreover, innovative tools are needed to couple the work of the scientific community with the rest of the society. Ecologists are challenged to become innovators and creators of new models, collaborative processes, methods and research tools, basic and applied, in topics such as agriculture, forestry, livestock and the use of natural resources. To meet this challenge, ecologists in Mexico need to amalgamate their work with other academic and non-academic actors to jointly promote environmental improvement processes with social benefits. This contribution examines challenges and perspectives of ecotechnological innovation in Mexico. We suggest to foster the research work in this field in laboratories without walls, in which flexible groups of actors design, test, and evaluate ecotechnological innovations that respond to specific local and regional socio-ecological and environmental problems.
