Abstract In 2010 Qi et al. [Opt. Lett.35(3), 312 (2010)] demonstrated a random number generator based on the drift of the phase of a laser due to spontaneous emission, The out-of-the-lab implementation of this scheme presents two main drawbacks: it requires a long and highly unbalanced interferometer to generate a random phase with uniform probability distribution, or alternatively, a shorter and slightly unbalanced interferometer that notwithstanding requires active stabilization and does not generate a uniform probability distribution without randomness extraction. Here we demonstrate that making use of the random nature of the phase difference between two independent laser sources and two coherent detectors we can overcome these limitations. The two main advantages of the system demonstrated are: i) it generates a probability distribution of quantum origin which is intrinsically uniform and thus in principle needs no randomness extraction for obtaining a uniform distribution, and ii) the phase is measured with telecom equipment routinely used for high capacity coherent optical communications. The speed of random bit generation is determined by the photodetector bandwidth and the linewidth of the lasers. As a by-product of our method, we have obtained images of how phase noise develops with time in a laser. This provides a highly visual alternative way of measuring the coherence time of a laser.

Abstract Unlabelled: Abstract Despite cytomegalovirus being the most common congenital infection leading to psychomotor impairment and sensori-neural hearing loss, little is known about early identification and management of congenitally infected neonates. This article reviews the literature and devises an algorithm for identification and management of these neonates.
Conclusion: Application of the current knowledge in the management of congenital cytomegalovirus infected neonates could be beneficial, until further evidence is available.

Abstract A highly sensitive and selective fluorimetric determination of potassium is proposed, based on solvent extraction of the ion-pair formed between a large anion and the cationic complex of K(+) with a crown ether. Sensitivity is achieved by selection of a highly fluorescent counter-ion of the fluorescein group (eosin). A linear working range from 0.01 to 1 ppm of potassium is obtained, which gives a higher sensitivity than any similar method for potassium determination. The relative standard deviation is 4-5%. Selectivity is achieved by matching the radius of the cavity of the 18-crown-6 to the ionic radius of potassium. The system used is exceptionally selective for extraction of potassium in the presence of alkali or alkaline-earth metal cations. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of potassium in blood serum.

Title translation Pitfalls in the diagnosis of congenital hyperinsulinism: a case report and review of the literature.
Abstract Background: Congenital hyperinsulinism is the most common cause for recurrent hypoglycaemia in neonates and infants. Uncontrolled hypoglycaemia leads to seizures and long-term cerebral damage. Often, the diagnosis is delayed because of nonspecific symptoms and confusing laboratory results.
Patient: We report a patient with hyperinsulinism who was initially wrongly diagnosed as having idiopathic cerebral convulsions and treated accordingly.
Conclusions: Diagnosis of congenital hyperinsulinism is based on a strong suspicion and a thorough family history. Normal random blood glucose or random insulin levels are not helpful in excluding this disease.

Abstract Nothofagus pumilio [Poepp. et Endl.] Krasser is a deciduous tree species that grows in Chile and adjacent Argentina between 36 and 56 degrees S, often forming the Andean tree line. Silvicultural systems proposed for this species integrate both regeneration and intermediate level operations in an orderly process for managing forest stands. The seed-tree method of regeneration has been used to manage even-aged stands of this species. This paper investigates the effect of seed tree cuttings on the regeneration of Nothofagus pumilio [Poepp. et Endl.] Krasser forest located in the Magallanes region (Chile). The studied forest was managed on an even-aged basis using a seed tree silvicultural system for regeneration with an intensity of cutting of 65-70% of the basal area and a minimum of 15 dominant lenga trees per hectare retained. A regeneration inventory sampling was used to quantify regeneration attributes in the study area. Regeneration was found to be significantly affected by the seed tree cuttings. In fact, the number of established individuals rose from 0.39 to 26.7 plants m(-2) pre-harvest to 9.2-21.5 plants m(-2) post-harvest, depending on the particular development stage. Total regeneration ranged from 9.5 to 48.2 plants m(-2). The number of plants established over the period 1992-1997 was related to the residual basal area, coverage and number of trees. However, mean tree height was not significantly related to any regeneration variable. Significant variables were used to establish a regeneration prediction model using single and multiple linear equations (R2<0.418). Consequently, the seed tree method of regeneration can be considered feasible for commercially valuable lenga forests, although this method, in its strictest application, will create many large, irregularly shaped, even-aged groups.
