Abstract The focus of this Special Issue is aimed at enhancing the discussion of Engineering Education, particularly related to technological and professional learning. In the 21st century, students face a challenging demand: they are expected to have the best scientific expertise, but also highly developed social skills and qualities like teamwork, creativity, communication, or leadership. Even though students and teachers are becoming more aware of this necessity, there is still a gap between academic life and the professional world. In this Special Edition Book, the reader can find works tackling interesting topics such as educational resources addressing students' development of competencies, the importance of final year projects linked to professional environments, and multicultural or interdisciplinary challenges

Abstract Dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma jets provide viable state-of-the-art nonthermal processes for a wide range of nanomaterials including particle transport and deposition. We report the interaction of argon and helium plasma jets with the particle aerosol, produced by ns laser ablation of a silver target and subsequently their transport for deposition on a distant substrate. The nanofeatures and functionality of the nanoparticles, entrained and deposited with the two plasma jets were compared using high-resolution electron microscopy, helium ion microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and in terms of the SERS effect. The plasma jet facilitates the transport of the particle aerosol under the upshot of plasma ionic wind, caused by the high electric field in the plasma. Compared to the helium plasma jet, the argon plasma jet leads to a relatively large particle deposition and promotes the formation of aggregates. The helium plasma jet enabled the deposition of spatially well dispersed particles. In both cases, the deposited particle was crystalline and plasmonic active. The plasma-driven altered morphology, expedient particle transport, and formation of agglomerates or spatially well dispersed particles are explained in plasma-induced ionic-wind, and dusty plasma framework. The findings are novel and interesting from the perspective of plasma-surface deposition, surface nanoengineering, and nanomaterial processing for applications in sensing, catalysis, surgical tools, futuristic coating technology, and heat-sensible biological activities.

Abstract Introduction: Obesity, one of the most frequent health problems in the adult population, is a condition characterized by excessive white adipose tissue accumulation and accompanied by the increased risk to develop other disorders such as type II diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, physical disability, frailty and sarcopenia. Total fat mass frequently increases during aging, often coexisting with sarcopenia, thus resulting in an emerging condition defined sarcopenic obesity (SO). Our previous data demonstrated the relevant role of the bromo and extra-terminal domain (BET) proteins inhibitor JQ1 in attenuating inflammation and fibrosis in sarcopenic mice. Moreover, we preliminarily observed that JQ1 administration markedly reduces white adipose tissue mass, suggesting a potential role of BET proteins on visceral fat deposition during aging.
Objectives: Starting from those observations, the aim of this study was to investigate the ability of JQ1 to reduce adiposity in a chronic diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model mimicking the human metabolic syndrome.
Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were divided in subgroups, either fed a standard diet or a high fat diet for 22 or 12 weeks, treated over the last 14 days with JQ1 or with vehicle.
Results: The results showed that JQ1 administration reduces fat mass, preserving skeletal muscle mass and function. A direct JQ1 lipolytic effect was demonstrated on mature adipocyte cultures. JQ1-mediated loss of adipose tissue mass was not associated with systemic inflammation or with lipid accumulation in muscle and liver. JQ1 administration did not impinge on skeletal muscle metabolism and oxidative capability, as shown by the lack of significant impact on mitochondrial mass and biogenesis.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the current data highlight a potential benefit of JQ1 administration to counteract obesity, suggesting epigenetic modulation as a prospective target in the treatment of obesity and sarcopenic obesity, despite the underlying multiorgan molecular mechanism is still not completely elucidated.

Abstract Sepsis is one of the major complications of surgery resulting in high morbidity and mortality, but there are no specific therapies for sepsis-induced organ dysfunction. Data obtained under Gene Expression Omnibus accession GSE131761 were re-analyzed and showed an increased gene expression of Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) in the whole blood of post-operative septic patients. Based on these results, we hypothesized that JAK/STAT activation may contribute to the pathophysiology of septic shock and, hence, investigated the effects of baricitinib (JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor) on sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction and multiple-organ failure (MOF). In a mouse model of post-trauma sepsis induced by midline laparotomy and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), 10-week-old male (n=32) and female (n=32) C57BL/6 mice received baricitinib (1mg/kg; i.p.) or vehicle at 1h or 3h post-surgery. Cardiac function was assessed at 24h post-CLP by echocardiography

Abstract Carbon and nitrogen are crucial elements for life and must be efficiently regenerated in a circular economy. Biomass streams at the end of their useful life, such as sewage sludge, are difficult to recycle even though they contain organic carbon and nitrogen components. Gasification is an emerging technology to utilize such challenging waste streams and produce syngas that can be further processed into, e.g., Fischer-Tropsch fuels, methane, or methanol. Here, the objective is to investigate if nitrogen can be recovered from product gas cleaning in a dual fluidized bed (DFB) after gasification of softwood pellets to form yeast biomass. Yeast biomass is a protein-rich product, which can be used for food and feed applications. An aqueous solution containing ammonium at a concentration of 66 mM was obtained and by adding other nutrients it enables the growth of the methylotrophic yeast

Abstract Polymer fractions from a biological matrix have been well-characterized by vibrational spectroscopy, XPS, CP/MAS ¹³C NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, thermal analysis, and SEM, and all the results had corroborated for the chemical extraction of β-glucan polymers grafted amino groups by peptide bonds (namely NH₂-β-glucan) as well as a cyclic oligosaccharide. Our primary purpose was to explore the polysaccharide extraction parameters in the sample of Usnea lichen, mainly in terms of extraction time and concentration of the extractive alkaline solution, to investigate the chemical characterization of the polysaccharide fractions. The low-cost methodology adopted in this work was able to extract the materials of interest with the expected efficiency without the significant impact of chemicals on the environment. The chemical extraction of an NH₂-bonded biopolymer can be a very interesting material for many applications since chemical functionalization is crucial to introducing specific properties for developing new materials. In this regard, the cyclic β-glucan described as a very porous material is highly desirable for various applications in the biomedical, biotechnological, and environmental areas.
