Abstract An alternate method of measuring anisotropy fields in thin film ferromagnets is demonstrated. The method relies on the magnetic susceptibility in a small a.c. magnetic field, measured \txtit{in situ} using the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE), and will be useful in situations where more specialized apparatus are not available, or constraints discourage the use of a large, static magnetic field. The method is demonstrated for Co/W(110) films, where it yields anisotropy fields in agreement with previous studies using more conventional torque magnetometry. The sensitivity of the method is demonstrated using CoO/Co/W(110) bilayer films, where the anisotropy due to interfacial exchange coupling is detected and used to find the N\'{e}el temperature of the thin CoO layer.

Abstract An archival descriptive study of public figure attackers in the United States between 1995 and 2015 was undertaken. Fifty-six incidents were identified, primarily through exhaustive internet searches, composed of 58 attackers and 58 victims. A code book was developed which focused upon victims, offenders, pre-attack behaviors including direct threats, attack characteristics, post-offense and other outcomes, motivations and psychological abstracts. The average interrater agreement for coding of bivariate variables was 0.835 (intraclass correlation coefficient). The three most likely victim categories were politicians, judges, and athletes. Attackers were males, many with a psychiatric disorder, most were grandiose, and most had both a violent and nonviolent criminal history. The known motivations for the attacks were often angry and personal, the most common being dissatisfaction with a judicial or other governmental process (23%). In only one case was the primary motivation to achieve notoriety. Lethality risk during an attack was 55%. Collateral injury or death occurred in 29% of the incidents. Only 5% communicated a direct threat to the target beforehand. The term "publicly intimate figure" is introduced to describe the sociocultural blurring of public and private lives among the targets, and its possible role in some attackers' perceptions and motivations. Abstract Introduction: Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of disability in bicycle riders. Preventive measures including bicycle helmet laws have been highlighted; however, its protective role has always been debated. The aim of this study was to determine the utility of bicycle helmets in prevention of intra-cranial hemorrhage. We hypothesized that bicycle helmets are protective and prevent the development of intra-cranial hemorrhage.
Methods: We performed a 4-year (2009-2012) retrospective cohort analysis of all the patients who presented with traumatic brain injury due to bicycle injuries to our level 1 trauma center. We compared helmeted and non-helmeted bicycle riders for differences in the patterns of injury, need for intensive care unit admissions and mortality.
Results: A total of 864 patients were reviewed of which, 709 patients (helmeted = 300, non-helmeted = 409) were included. Non-helmeted bicycle riders were more likely to be young (p < 0.001) males (p = 0.01). There was no difference in the median ISS between the two groups (p = 0.3). Non-helmeted riders were more likely to have a skull fracture (p = 0.01) and a scalp laceration (p = 0.01) compared to the helmeted riders. There was no difference in intra-cranial hemorrhage between the two groups (p = 0.1). Wearing a bicycle helmet was not independently associated (p = 0.1) with development of intra-cranial hemorrhage.
Conclusion: Bicycle helmets may have a protective effect against external head injury but its protective role for intra-cranial hemorrhage is questionable. Further studies assessing the protective role of helmets for intra-cranial hemorrhage are warranted.

Abstract Atmospheric models constitute the best tools available for the setting of policy, and may, in some cases, be the only tools that are available. The best examples of their kind bring together all current knowledge of pollutant behavior in the atmosphere, making it possible to unravel the often complex interactions between pollutants and atmospheric dynamics. They also allow the possibility of evaluating hypothetical changes in emissions and other conditions to evaluate potential abatement strategies, or to assess the impact of proposed new emission sources. This paper provides an overview of mathematical atmospheric models and their application to the development of air quality policy. The paper discusses the types of atmospheric models currently in use, categorized by spatial scale, and the requirements for credible modeling. Issues associated with model validity and accuracy are described and case studies are reviewed to illustrate atmospheric model use in policy development and the need for careful analysis in interpreting model predictions.

Abstract Objective: Late complications can develop in patients after surgery for aortic type A dissection, mandating redo surgery on the ascending aorta and arch.
Methods: From 2006 to 2010, 23 patients (aged 41-69 years) who had late complications related to previous aortic surgery for acute type A dissection underwent redo surgery. Initial surgery included ascending aorta replacement in all cases.
Results: The main indications for reoperation were progressive enlargement of the false lumen of the aortic arch or descending aorta and suture line dehiscence in 10 patients each. All patients with progressive aneurysm formation in nonresected aortic segments had persistent dissection within the aortic arch since initial surgery. Suture line dehiscence led to a localized hematoma in most cases. Three patients presented with graft infection and extensive perigraft hematoma. The average time interval from the initial repair to the redo procedure was 71±56 months. Exchange of the formerly implanted Dacron graft in the ascending aorta was the most frequently used surgical procedure. Implantation of a valved conduit was deemed necessary in 4 cases, and isolated aortic valve replacement was necessary in 2 cases. A hybrid stent graft was used in 6 patients. All patients survived surgery, and 1 patient died of postoperative low output cardiac failure in hospital. Only 1 major stroke was noted.
Conclusions: Complex reoperations for repaired acute type A dissection can be performed safely. The concern for the reoperative risk should not dictate the operative strategy during the initial procedure in acute type A dissection.
