Abstract Background During respiratory infection pandemics, masks and respirators are highly sought after, especially for frontline healthcare workers and patients carrying respiratory viruses. The objective of this study was to systematically review fit test pass rates and identify factors influencing the fitting characteristics. Methods Potentially relevant studies were identified using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct during the COVID-19 pandemic from February 5, 2020, to March 21, 2023. The search strategy using the following keywords was conducted: Quantitative Fit Test, Condensation Nuclei Counter, Controlled Negative Pressure, PortaCount, Sibata, Accufit, Fit, Seal, Mask, Respirator, Respiratory Protective Device, Respiratory Protective Equipment, Protective Device, Personal Protective Equipment, COVID-19, Coronavirus, and SARS-CoV-2. The quality of the included studies was also assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Results A total of 137 articles met the eligibility criteria. Fifty articles had a quality score of less than 7 (good quality). A total of 21 studies had a fit test pass rate of less than 50%. 26 studies on disposable respirators and 11 studies on reusable respirators had an FF of less than 50 and less than 200, respectively. The most influential factors include respirator brand/model, style, gender, ethnicity, facial dimensions, facial hair, age, reuse, extensive movement, seal check, comfort and usability assessment, and training. Conclusion 37.36% of the disposable respirator studies and 43% of the reusable respirator studies did not report fit test results. 67.86% of the disposable respirator studies had a fit test pass rate greater than 50%, and 35.84% of these studies had an FF greater than 100. Also, 85.71% of the reusable respirator studies had a fit test pass rate greater than 50%, and 52.77% of these studies had an FF greater than 1000. Overall, the fit test pass rate was relatively acceptable. Newly developed or modified respirators must undergo reliable testing to ...

Abstract Background: For an organization to be successful, the productivity of its employees is of vital importance. This study aimed to: 1) translate and examine the psychometric properties of the Health and Work Questionnaire (HWQ) among Iranian office workers, and 2) Determine the association between six subscales of the Persian version of HWQ (P-HWQ) and Work-related Musculoskeletal Symptoms (WMSs) among the subjects. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among office workers employed at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. In order to standardize the questionnaire, the English version of the HWQ was translated into Persian (the Iranian official language), using the standard “forward-backward” translation, cognitive debriefing, and cultural adaptation procedure. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to determine the WMSs prevalence rate among the subjects. Results: 129 office workers, including 44 (34.1%) males and 85 (65.9%) females with a mean ± SD age of 36.22±7.72 years voluntarily participated in this study. Internal consistency of the P-HWQ was acceptable for all subscales (0.65≤α). Factor analysis of the P-HWQ for each item related to the subscale was acceptable (0.4<). The highest prevalence rates of WMSs in the last week were related to lower back (51.2%), neck (43.4%), and shoulders (41.1%). The concentration/focus subscale of productivity (derived from P-HWQ) was related to WMSs in participants. Conclusion: The P-HWQ has good structural characteristics, is a valid and reliable instrument, and can be used for measuring the productivity of Iranian office workers. Improvement of working conditions is suggested to reduce the musculoskeletal problems, and enhancement of people’s concentration/focus and productivity.

Abstract Qualitative fit testing is mandatory for tight-fitting respirators to ensure that the wearer fitted properly before entering a contaminated workplace. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the homemade solutions as substitution of commercial products for qualitative fit testing of particulate respirators. Two homemade solutions of Bitrex™ and saccharin were made according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation 29 CFR 1910.134. Threshold Screening Tests (TSTs) of commercial solutions, as well as homemade ones, were conducted on 62 participants in a random order. A placebo was also tested to assure the participants could distinguish its flavorless from other taste of solutions. There were no statistically significant differences between the commercial and homemade solutions representing that participants detected the bitter taste of the Bitrex™ and sweet taste of the saccharin solutions (96.8% vs. 91.9% and 93.5% vs. 83.9%, respectively). Homemade solutions that were stable and haven’t been contained microbial contaminations, could be substituted for commercial products in qualitative fit testing of filtering face-piece respirators (FFRs). Overall, this protocol presents a practical and cost-benefit technique to assess the fit testing of FFRs. Protocol name: Efficacy of homemade fit solutions as qualitative challenge agents for fit testing of filtering face-piece respirators (FFRs), Keywords: Qualitative fit test, Challenge agents, Commercial and homemade solutions, Filtering face piece respirators

Abstract Background: Micro-scale enterprises play a vital role in development of national economics and self-employment. However, these industries due to lack of proper safety controls including poor housekeeping, َas well as low awarenessabout safety behaviors and procedures, do not have adequate healthand safety condition. This study was aimed to assess housekeeping principles and its effective factors in Shiraz micro-scale enterprises. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 selected micro-scale enterprises in Shiraz. A researcher-made checklist with reliability and validity of 0.851 was used for the study. Results: The mean score of housekeeping among studied enterprises was calculated to be 58.69 11.23%., The maximum and minimum scores among different housekeeping fields were related to equipment layout, and labeling calculated about 8.99±39.06%, and 5.77±3.77%, respectively. Among studied variables, there was a significant relationship between the type of activity and the incident report with housekeeping score (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed the rate of incident report was higher among enterprises having better housekeeping status which could help enterprises in better safety management including planning for prevention and reduction of incidents.

Abstract Background: Individual factors play an important role in the safety performance of small and medium-sized enterprises that might have physical, mental or psychological nature. Some of these factors are related to the subjects’ personality and unchangeable; however, others are related to motivation and attitude, which could be improved through training. This study aimed to assess the safety attitude and its effective factors among workers in micro- and small-scale enterprises (MSSEs) in Shiraz in 2015.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 349 workers in MSSEs. Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ) was filled out by self-report method which consisted of questions including general information, cognitive, affective and conative ‎dimensions. Then, SPSS software version 22 was used to assess the significant difference between the variables (p-value <0.05).Results: The mean score of safety attitude was (103.05±8.73 out of 125). The minimum and maximum safety attitude scores were related to affective (16.13±3 out of 20) and cognitive (46.7±4.12 out of 55) dimensions, respectively. Also, there was a significant difference between the educational level and safety attitude. Workers with higher education had higher safety attitude scores. Conclusions: The results showed that most of the workers had safety attitude but they were not desirable in affective and conative domains. Therefore, it is required to enhance the affective domain through training the workers, enhancing their participation, paying attention to their views on occupational safety and health issues and ‎promote the conative one through the supervision of legal authorities
