Abstract In high-energy physics it is a recurring challenge to efficiently and precisely (enough) calculate the global significance of, e.g., a potential new resonance. We propose a new method that models the significance in the search region as a Gaussian Process. The kernel of the Gaussian Process is approximated with a covariance matrix and is calculated with a carefully designed set of background-only data sets, comparable in number to the random background-only data sets used in a typical analysis that relies on the average upcrossings of the significance. The trials factor for both low and moderate significances can subsequently be calculated to the desired precision with a computationally inexpensive random sampling of the Gaussian Process. In addition, once the covariance of the Gaussian Process is determined, the average number of upcrossings can be computed analytically. In our work we give some highlights of the analytic calculation and also discuss some peculiarities of the trials factor estimation on a finite grid. We illustrate the method with studies of three complementary statistical models.

Abstract Fyodor Ivanovich Schmit was a prominent Russian Byzantinist, art historian and museologist. This article is devoted to one of the episodes of his academic biography in the mid — second half of the 1920th: his relations with the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and an attempt to propose him as a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1928—1929. Schmit's theoretical conceptualizations did not find understanding among members of the academic corporation, but they were enthusiastically accepted by scholars of the younger generation. In particular, representatives of the museum world actively supported Schmit's election to the Academy.

Abstract B.V. Farmakovsky — the largest Russian (Soviet) Classical world and art historian, organizer of science of the late XIX — first third of the XX century. In the Manuscript Department of the Scientific Archive of the Institute of history of Material Culture of RAS a number of documents are preserved, which cover the development of Russian (Soviet) studies on Ancient Orient, Classical art and archaeology: two speeches of Pharmakovski in memory of the B.A. Turayev, recommendation letters to S.A. Zhebelyev and O.F. Waldhauer to the Russian Academy of History of Material Culture. These documents are important as a source of information for the reconstruction of Russian historical science in general and scientific biographies of the scholars in particular.

Abstract Introduction: Limited availability of individual standards is a bottleneck for quality control of functional foods and natural medicines. The use of standard mixtures or secondary standards is a possible alternative in this case. Earlier, an approach known as standardised reference extract (RE) strategy was introduced for HPLC-UV analysis of different plant materials; however, its application in HPLC-MS analysis has not been investigated.
Objective: To establish an HPLC-MS-based RE method for determination of ginsenoside content in ginseng infusions using commercially available extract reference material of Panax quinquefolius L.
Results: The developed HPLC-MS method was validated as precise (1.1%-9.4% intra-day variation; 1.6%-12.8% inter-day variation) and highly sensitive [limit of detection (LOD): 1-40 ng/mL; limit of quantification (LOQ): 4-120 ng/mL]. The stability of samples was satisfactory (5.7%-16.3%). The RE quantification method was compared with the external standard method, and the obtained difference was not significant, mostly in the range of 5%-10%. Matrix effects for the diluted samples of RE and ginseng infusions, determined via the standard addition method, were in the range of 85%-115% and 80%-126%, respectively, and were also positively correlated with the ginsenoside concentration. Eleven batches of ginseng infusions from different manufacturers were analysed using the established method.
Conclusion: The method for HPLC-MS-based ginsenoside quantification using RE as a secondary standard was established for the first time. The results of this study demonstrate that the application of the standardised RE strategy in HPLC-MS can minimise the matrix effect-related error in addition to the cost-effective quality control of herbal products, foods, and traditional medicines.

Abstract The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is an archive providing free access to a wide range and large volume of biological sequence data and literature. Staff scientists at NCBI analyze user-submitted data in the archive, producing gene and SNP annotation and generating sequence alignment tools. NCBI's flagship genome browser, Genome Data Viewer (GDV), displays our in-house RefSeq annotation; is integrated with other NCBI resources such as Gene, dbGaP, and BLAST; and provides a platform for customized analysis and visualization. Here, we describe how members of the biomedical research community can use GDV and the related NCBI Sequence Viewer (SV) to access, analyze, and disseminate NCBI and custom biomedical sequence data. In addition, we report how users can add SV to their own web pages to create a custom graphical sequence display without the need for infrastructure investments or back-end deployments.
