Abstract: In the present work, nanocomposite films based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing different amounts of Origanum vulgare essential oil (OEO, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2% v/v) were reinforced with 0.5% (w/v) of alphachitin nanocrystals (α-CHNC, from shrimp ... ...

Abstract -In the present work, nanocomposite films based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing different amounts of Origanum vulgare essential oil (OEO, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2% v/v) were reinforced with 0.5% (w/v) of alphachitin nanocrystals (α-CHNC, from shrimp and from lobster) and prepared by solvent casting. Another set of films was prepared without α –CHNC to assess the effect of the nanocrystals on the final properties of the films. The obtained nanocomposite films were homogeneous and showed better thermal stability and mechanical properties. After exposure the nanocomposite films to ultraviolet radiation, the obtained data revealed that the presence of α-CHNC into the materials has a retarding effect on their loss of mechanical properties. It was also shown that the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic content of the materials increased with the augmentation of OEO and with the antioxidant release time. Interestingly, the nanocomposite films made of chitin nanocrystals from shrimp showed better total phenolic content than the unfilled films and the nanocomposite films made of chitin nanocrystals from lobster over the first 48 h. Henceforward, this study demonstrated the potential of the nanocomposite films based on PVA, OEO and reinforced with α-CHNC for active food-packaging applications.

Abstract Bark is one of the most available by-product derived from the wood-base industry because of the total volume of the tree that comprised. This study aimed at evaluating the chemical composition of barks of six typical species of the mixed Atlantic forest of the Basque Country and the potential of their extractives. The used species were Northern red oak (Quercus rubra), Common oak (Quercus robur), Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior), Iberian White birch (Betula celtiberica), Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) and Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). Differences between chemical compositions of all the barks were noted. Extractive content was very high for all the barks remarking Sweet chestnut and Common ash with the highest content with 31.89 and 29.44% respectively. The suberin content was higher than 3% with a maximum value for Black locust of 16.37%. Variation of EtOH/H2O was high depending on studied species with a range of extraction yield of 3.08to15.77%. Total phenolic content of the bark extracts ranged from 178.11 to 635.08 mg GAE/g of dry bark extract and total flavonoid content from 439.19 to 1021.78 mg CE/g of dry bark extract. The antioxidant capacity of the bark extracts was measured by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP and the obtained values were ranged from 167.23 and 1912.38 mg TE/g dried bark extract, 561.92 to 1556.57 mg TE/g dried bark extract 146.11 to 640.30 mg TE/g dried bark extract, respectively. The structural differences were confirmed by GPC and FT-IR, where it was observed an average molecular weight differences and different spectra. The obtained results confirm the high interest in barks source as biomolecules for specific uses such as cosmetics or pharmaceuticals among others.

Abstract Urinary tract infection is the most common human infection with a high morbidity. In primary care and hospital services, conventional urine culture is a key part of infection diagnosis but results take at least 24 h. Therefore, a rapid and reliable screening method is still needed to discard negative samples as quickly as possible and to reduce the laboratory workload. In this aspect, this study aims to compare the diagnostic performance between Sysmex UF-1000i and FUS200 systems in comparison to urine culture as the gold standard. From March to June 2016, 1,220 urine samples collected at the clinical microbiology laboratory of the "Miguel Servet" hospital were studied in parallel with both analysers, and some technical features were evaluated to select the ideal equipment. The most balanced cut-off values taking into account bacteria or leukocyte counts were 138 bacteria/μL or 119.8 leukocyte/μL for the UF-1000i (95.3% SE and 70.4% SP), and 5.7 bacteria/μL or 4.3 leukocyte/μL for the FUS200 (95.8% SE and 44.4% SP). The reduction of cultured plates was 37.4% with the FUS200 and 58.3% with the UF-1000i. This study shows that both techniques improve the workflow in the laboratory, but the UF-1000i has the highest specificity at any sensitivity and the FUS200 needs a shorter processing time.

Titelübersetzung Nasopharyngeal carriage of pneumococcal serotypes in healthy pre-school aged children after 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine.
Abstract Background and objective: To determine the characteristics influencing pneumococcal serotype colonization in healthy pre-school aged children, the distribution of serotypes and their antimicrobial susceptibility, after the introduction of pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine (VNC-7 v). SUJETOS AND METHODS: Nasopharyngeal samples were collected from children under 6 years of age attending well-child examinations in the province of Zaragoza (Spain). Logistic regression was used to study different variables related to the status of the carriers.
Results: Of the 371 children studied 30.7% were found to be carriers. With a vaccine coverage rate of 66%, factors related with presence of pneumococcal carriage were found to be the number of siblings (OR 1.44; CI 95% 1.05-1.97 for each sibling), attending a school or child day care centre (OR 3.99; CI 95% 2.00-7.96) and suffering from a minor upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) (OR 1.72; CI 95% 1.02-2.90). Only 8.7% corresponded to VNC-7 v serotypes. The most common non VNC-7 v serotypes isolated were 19A, 6A, 15B, 11, and 15A. Significantly greater resistance was detected among VNC-7 v serotypes.
Conclusion: Children in the setting of this study carried pneumococci more commonly when they have siblings, attend school or day care, or suffer from minor URTI. In the VNC-7 v vaccine era, VNC-7 v serotypes have become rare occurrences (8.7%) and emerging serotypes present better susceptibility to antibiotics.
