Abstract We reviewed a series of 50 consecutive wrist arthroscopy patients who had been investigated pre-operatively by direct magnetic resonance arthrography and calculated the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and overall accuracy of magnetic resonance arthrography in detecting full-thickness triangular fibrocartilage complex tears, intrinsic carpal ligamentous lesions, wrist synovitis and chondral lesions in the radiocarpal joint. The sensitivities of magnetic resonance arthrography in detecting central triangular fibrocartilage complex tears, peripheral triangular fibrocartilage complex tears, scapholunate ligament tears, lunotriquetral ligament tears, dorsal synovitis and radiocarpal chondral lesions were 89%, 63%, 71%, 100%, 32% and 65%, respectively, and its specificities in detecting these lesions were 91%, 98%, 89%, 94% 94% and 97%, respectively. This study suggests that single compartment direct wrist magnetic resonance arthrography can provide high diagnostic accuracy for full-thickness triangular fibrocartilage lesions, intrinsic carpal ligament tears and chondral lesions in the radiocarpal joint, but that it is much less accurate in diagnosing synovitis of the radiocarpal joint.

Abstract Recent studies based on lattice Monte Carlo simulations of quantum chromodynamics (QCD)-the theory of strong interactions-have demonstrated that at high temperature there is a phase change from confined hadronic matter to a deconfined quark-gluon plasma in which quarks and gluons can travel distances that greatly exceed the size of hadrons. Here we show that the phase structure of such strongly interacting matter can be decoded by analysing particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions within the framework of statistical hadronization, which accounts for the thermal distribution of particle species. Our results represent a phenomenological determination of the location of the phase boundary of strongly interacting matter, and imply quark-hadron duality at this boundary.

Abstract Introduction: Magnetic resonance (MR) arthrogram is a commonly used investigation tool to detect various pathologies in the shoulder. The complications following this procedure is minor and rare. Septic arthritis is one of the rare complications which can develop after MR arthrogram. We report a case of secondary frozen shoulder after MR arthrogram induced septic arthritis.
Presentation of case: A young, fit and well female patient underwent MR arthrogram to detect any labral tears. Two days following the procedure, she developed signs and symptoms suggestive of septic arthritis of the shoulder. The patient underwent repeated arthroscopic debridement and washout. The organisms isolated was Staphylococcus epidermidis. She was treated with six weeks of intravenous antibiotics. The patient developed stiffness of the shoulder due to secondary frozen shoulder which was treated with arthroscopic capsular release with good functional outcomes at three months.
Discussion: MR arthrogram is a rare cause of septic arthritis of the shoulder. The common method introducing the organisms is from the skin flora or contaminated arthrogram trays. The treatment is repeated arthroscopic washouts and six weeks of appropriate intravenous antibiotics. Residual pain, stiffness and chondrolysis are common sequelae of septic arthritis.
Conclusion: Septic arthritis is a recognised and rare complication of MR arthrogram. Early and prompt diagnosis with arthroscopic washout and debridement combined with intravenous antibiotics helps to eradicate the infection. Secondary frozen shoulder is a late complication of sepsis in the joint.

Abstract Left ventricular volumes (LVVs) and ejection fraction (LVEF) are key elements in the evaluation and follow-up of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Therefore, a feasible and reproducible imaging method to be used by both experienced and in-training echocardiographers is mandatory. Our aim was to establish if, in a large echo lab, echocardiographers in-training provide feasible and more reproducible results for the evaluation of patients with HFrEF when using 3-dimensional echocardiography (3-DE) versus 2-dimensional echocardiography (2-DE). Sixty patients with HFrEF (46 males, age: 58 ± 17 y) underwent standard transthoracic 2-D acquisitions and 3-D multibeat full volumes of the left ventricle. One expert user in echocardiography (expert) and three echocardiographers with different levels of training in 2-DE (beginner, medium and advanced) measured the 2-D LVVs and LVEFs on the same consecutive images of patients with HFrEF. Afterward, the expert performed a 1-mo training in 3-DE analysis of the users, and both the expert and trainees measured the 3-D LVVs and LVEF of the same patients. Measurements provided by the expert and all trainees in echo were compared. Six patients were excluded from the study because of poor image quality. The mean end-diastolic LVV of the remaining 54 patients was 214 ± 75 mL with 2-DE and 233 ± 77 mL with 3-DE. Mean LVEF was 35 ± 10% with 2-DE and 33 ± 10% with 3-DE. Our analysis revealed that, compared with the expert user, the trainees had acceptable reproducibility for the 2-DE measurements, according to their level of expertise in 2-DE (intra-class coefficients [ICCs] ranging from 0.75 to 0.94). However, after the short training in 3-DE, they provided feasible and more reproducible measurements of the 3-D LVVs and LVEF (ICCs ranging from 0.89-0.97) than they had with 2-DE. 3-DE is a feasible, rapidly learned and more reproducible method for the assessment of LVVs and LVEF than 2-DE, regardless of the basic level of expertise in 2-DE of the trainees in echocardiography. In echo labs with a wide range of staff experience, 3-DE might be a more accurate method for the follow-up of patients with HFrEF.

Abstract This report reviews the study of open heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in high-energy hadronic collisions, as tools to investigate fundamental aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics, from the proton and nucleus structure at high energy to deconfinement and the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Emphasis is given to the lessons learnt from LHC Run 1 results, which are reviewed in a global picture with the results from SPS and RHIC at lower energies, as well as to the questions to be addressed in the future. The report covers heavy flavour and quarkonium production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This includes discussion of the effects of hot and cold strongly interacting matter, quarkonium photoproduction in nucleus-nucleus collisions and perspectives on the study of heavy flavour and quarkonium with upgrades of existing experiments and new experiments. The report results from the activity of the SaporeGravis network of the I3 Hadron Physics programme of the European Union 7[Formula: see text] Framework Programme.
